Asantewaa was born in Illinois to Jamaican parents. She completed high school in Evanston, Illinois and attended University of Illinois Chicago for undergraduate study. She studied for a semester at the Institute of African Studies located at University of Ghana, Legon. She proceeded to Northwestern University for her first master’s degree in theology. . Asantewaa holds a second master’s degree, and a doctoral degree from Northern Illinois University. Asantewaa has worked in the field of history for the past 15 years, serving as a public historian and an adjunct lecturer. Asantewaa is also an independent researcher who chronicles the lives of the women of the Ethiopian royal family. She is co-editor of the journal, Empress Menen Chronicles: An African Woman’s Journal of History and Culture.
Asantewaa is the visioner for Empress Menen Day Chicago. This annual, city wide celebration of black women is in its 10th year of existence. Asantewaa is the co-founder of Indigo Nation Homeschool Association, an organization that for the past 15 years has supported African American families on the homeschool journey. She also founded AST: a puberty rites program for girls.
Asantewaa lives in Illinois with her husb to explore known and unknown depths of women warriors.
