WFD produces research that aims to build an evidence base for and improve the quality of democracy assistance. We also generate policy that contributes new tools for democracy support, as well as guides for parliaments, civil society and democracy support practitioners.

In December 2025, the World Bank introduced substantial revisions to the WGI’s data sources, indicator composition, and aggregation methodology. While many of these changes address long-standing discussions and are well justified, this paper finds that revisions to the so-called ‘political’ indicators – particularly within the Voice and Accountability dimension – raise conceptual, analytical, and empirical concerns.

Violence Against Women in Politics (VAWP) is a systemic form of political violence used to silence women and maintain unequal power structures. In The Gambia, women in politics face multiple forms of violence rooted in entrenched institutional and socio-political inequalities. This research addresses a critical gap by examining how political systems enable VAWP and by centring the lived experiences of affected women.
