Aug 13, 2025 | Communications

Social and VoIP platform Discord was launched in 2015 as a gamers-friendly communication platform, but it also acquired popularity among non-gaming audiences in recent years. The platform allows users to create or join thematic communities called servers, and as of August 2025, the Midjourney server was the most popular community on Discord, with over 20.69 million members. Midjourney is an AI-powered text-to-image tool, which is accessible via a Discord bot on the official Discord server of the program. The second most popular Discord server was Viggle, with 4.27 million members.

Not just a gamers’ space: Discord for communities

While gaming servers are still among the most popular online spaces on the platform – with communities such as Marvel Rivals and the official Genshin Impact server amassing more than four and two million users respectively as of mid-2025 – Discord is also a space for several different communities to come together. Educational servers, which have been growing on the platform since the outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic, range from language learning to hacking and programming, with the server “MikaParadise” counting over one million Discord users, and the server for Sui counting over 927 thousand users, respectively. Cross-platform communities include online spaces in which users share content from other social media, such as affiliated Reddit servers and TikTok-based communities. As of April 2024, Lofi Girl and Dadscord were the most popular music servers on Discord, with 929.9 thousand and 600.6 thousand registered resharing content from the popular social video platform.

Discord servers: the challenge of providing self-managed online spaces

As Discord is composed by both public and private groups, moderating servers and enforcing the company’s Terms of Services represents a challenge. According to Discord, 15 percent of the company’s employees are assigned to safety and moderation. However, servers on the platform are also moderated in their day-to-day activity by volunteer moderators. While Discord has repeatedly reported they do not have access to the four billion messages users exchange daily on the platform, in 2017 the company attracted global attention when it was revealed that it was used by alt-right groups in the United States to plan and organize the “Unite the Right 2.0” rally in Virginia, which culminated with a terroristic attack that left one dead and several wounded. Since then, Discord has engaged in several campaigns to remove servers classified as promulgating violent extremism: during the fourth quarter of 2023, 613 servers were proactively removed from the platform due to violent extremism by the company’s safety and moderation team, while 14 servers were reactively removed after users’ report.

Aug 18, 2025 | Currencies

How many cryptocurrencies are there? In short, there were over 9,521 as of August 2025, although there were many more digital coins in the early months of 2022. Note, however, that a large portion of cryptocurrencies might not be that significant. There are other estimates of roughly 10,000 cryptocurrencies existing, but most of these are either inactive or discontinued. Due to how open the creation process of a cryptocurrency is, it is relatively easy to make one. Indeed, the top 20 cryptocurrencies make up nearly 90 percent of the total market.

Why are there thousands of cryptocurrencies?

Any private individual or company that knows how to write a program on a blockchain can technically create a cryptocurrency. That blockchain can be an existing one. Ethereum and Binance Smart Chain are popular blockchain platforms for such ends, including smart contracts within Decentralized Finance (DeFi). The ease of crypto creation allows some individuals to find solutions to real-world payment problems while others hope to make a quick profit. This explains why some crypto lack utility. Meme coins such as Dogecoin - named after a Japanese dog species - are an infamous example, with Dogecoin's creator coming out and stating the coin started as a joke.

The many types of cryptocurrency

Meme coins are but one group of cryptocurrencies. Other types include altcoins, utility tokens, governance tokens, and stablecoins. Altcoins are often measured against Bitcoin, as this refers to all crypto that followed Bitcoin - the first digital currency ever created. Utility tokens and governance tokens are somewhat connected to NFTs and the metaverse. A specific example is the MANA cryptocurrency, which allows real estate purchases in the Decentraland metaverse. Stablecoins refer to the likes of Tether, which are pegged to a real-world asset like the U.S. dollar. Such coins are meant to be less volatile than regular cryptocurrency.

Aug 13, 2025 | Online Travel Market

In July 2025, booking.com was the most visited travel and tourism website worldwide. That month, Booking’s web page recorded almost 519 million visits. Tripadvisor.com and wetter.com followed in the ranking, with roughly 133 million and 108 million visits, respectively.

Popular online travel agencies in the U.S.

Online travel agencies (OTAs), such as Booking.com and Expedia, offer a wide variety of services, including online hotel bookings, flight reservations, and car rentals. According to the Statista Consumer Insights Global survey, when looking at flight search engine online bookings by brand in the United States, Booking.com and Expedia were the most popular options when it came to making online flight reservations in 2025. When focusing on hotel and private accommodation online bookings in the U.S., Booking.com was again the most popular brand, followed by Airbnb, Expedia, and Hotels.com.

Booking Holdings vs. Expedia Group

Booking.com is one of the most popular sites of the online travel group Booking Holdings, the leading online travel agency worldwide based on revenue, that also owns brands like Priceline, Kayak, and Agoda. In 2024, Booking Holdings' revenue amounted to almost 24 billion U.S. dollars, the highest figure reported by the company to date. Meanwhile, global revenue of Expedia Group, which manages brands like Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo, reached nearly 14 billion U.S. dollars that year.

The average price for regular gasoline in the United States stood at 3.14 U.S. dollars per gallon on August 18, 2025. This compared to a diesel price of 3.69 U.S. dollars per gallon. Prices for gasoline remained unchanged that week, while diesel prices decreased.

Real price surge of 2022 and 2023 still below 2011 to 2014 prices

When looking at the real price of gasoline over time, U.S. drivers had to pay notably more in the years between 2011 and 2014. The surge in prices noted throughout 2022 and partly for 2023, which followed supply constraints, was still lower in terms of real U.S. dollars.

U.S. on the lower-end spectrum of worldwide motor fuel prices

The U.S. has some of the lowest conventional motor fuel prices in the world. Although fuel prices are usually higher in high-income countries, the U.S. profits from its position as the world’s largest crude oil producer and can keep retail prices for oil products comparatively low. For example, among high-income countries, prices for automotive premium gasoline (RON 95) were only lower in Russia and Saudi Arabia - countries where crude oil and oil product exports are in part restricted by sanctions, thus keeping domestic supply high.

Aug 14, 2025 | Online Search

Much like the alternatives to mainstream social media platforms, China has pioneered the production of search engines that provide an alternative to Google and Bing. Some of the most prominent Chinese search engines are Baidu and Haosou (also 360 Search), with a combined market share of 73 percent.

Baidu – China’s internet giant

Since its founding in 2000, Baidu’s revenue surged swiftly and totaled about 133.13 billion yuan in 2024. A majority of the revenue was generated through online marketing services. However, the operating profit bounced back after having contracted in 2019 and 2021. Baidu used to control about 70 to 80 percent of China’s online search market, a new contender Haosou emerged and is expected to close the gap shortly.

Other search engines in China

In a country with around 878 million online search users, there are multiple local options besides Baidu. In a 2023 consumer survey in China, Shenma and Quark Search were rated the best in user experience whereas Haosou or 360 Search led the pack in search response speed and the diversity in search results.

Lendlease Group Limited, a multinational construction and property management company headquartered in Sydney, Australia, reported a total revenue of around 7.75 billion Australian dollars in the 2025 financial year. This represented a decline from the previous year's revenue of just over 9.3 billion dollars.

Lendlease shifts strategy

Lendlease was once a dominant force in the Australian construction industry, but since the COVID-19 pandemic, the company has struggled financially. In the 2024 fiscal year, the company reported a substantial profit loss after tax of around 1.5 billion Australian dollars. This loss underscores the complex operating environment for construction firms, even those with a global presence. As a result, in May 2024, Lendlease announced its intention to sell its overseas operations in Asia, Europe, and the Americas and focus solely on its domestic operations in Australia by late 2025.

Australia’s construction industry workforce

As of November 2024, over 1.36 million people were employed in Australia’s construction industry, continuing the upward trend since 2021. The building installation services sector leads with the highest workforce across construction-related industries, with around 318,300 employees. Building completion services was the second-largest sector by number of people in its workforce. Despite the increase in the construction industry's workforce size in recent years, the industry still struggles with a skilled worker shortage and fluctuating construction labor productivity index (LPI).
