Let's be honest, some shifts are going to be chaos. A tough customer, a short-staffed shift. You can feel the tension building, but the more emotionally prepared you are before your shift starts, the easier it is to stay calm in high-stress moments. And there are habits you can build to help. Try this at some moment before your shift starts. Take an intentional pause. Take a breath, then remind yourself of something that grounds you. It could be a personal mantra, a positive affirmation, or a phrase that centers you like “Stay calm,” “You've got this,” or whatever feels real for you. Before you leave, take another intentional pause. Take a breath, then remind yourself of something good that happened on your shift, or a moment that kept you calm when the stress started to rise.
