On Saturday, August 9, VDSS had the privilege of participating in the Commonwealth Day of Play at Taylor Farm Park in Sandston, Virginia! 🌟 This special event celebrated the power of play, strengthened community bonds, and promoted well-being for all ages. Our team of volunteers hosted a table with resources for adults and a pinwheel craft for children. They also led one of the main event activities, helping to create a fun and memorable day for families across the Commonwealth. Huge thanks to our awesome staff volunteers — Aaran Kelley, MSW, Donna Sneed, CSPO, CBAP, SAFe®, Natasha Stevens, Nikole C., Shelita Gaskins, and Vrunda Nadgouda — for helping make the event such a success!

Here’s to the everyday heroes in our communities! This month, we’re shining a light on three local departments doing incredible work. 💡 Isle of Wight County Department of Social Services staff donated 300+ food items to a community partner to help address food insecurity in their area. Shenandoah Valley Social Services and partners came together for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, empowering seniors with knowledge and resources. Mathews County Department of Social Services hosted the Senior Safety Fair, helping seniors stay safe and informed — with a visit from Attorney General of Virginia Jason Miyares! Strong communities start with caring, compassionate people. Let’s keep supporting one another and doing great work!

We're so proud of our Summer Intern Cohort's incredible generosity and hard work! Not only are they gaining valuable skills, but they are truly living out VDSS's core value of People Helping People. Keep up the great work 🎉
Over the summer, as a Service Desk Intern at VDSS Virginia Department of Social Services, I’ve been learning so much — not just about tech, but about community too. Our intern cohort came together and raised 712 school supply items to help students and families prepare for back-to-school season 📚✏️

"Virginia is at a crossroads,” writes Department of Social Services Commissioner James Williams in Cardinal News: https://lnkd.in/euXfXADj. With reports of child abuse and neglect on the rise and historic levels of turnover facing our local departments of social services, the time for urgent, collective action is now. Earlier this month, Governor Youngkin launched the Safe Kids, Strong Families initiative, funding a $1 million study to address critical issues including child safety, permanency, and workforce shortages. This is just one of the many ways the administration is delivering real change for our Commonwealth’s families. Commissioner Williams reminds us that progress begins with the people on the front lines. By investing in the professionals who serve our children and families, we lay the groundwork for a child welfare system that is not only more responsive, but more resilient. Together, we have the opportunity—and the responsibility—to build a safer, stronger, and more compassionate Virginia.
