My first solo show, 𝘼 𝘽𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝 𝙤𝙛 𝙁𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙝 𝘼𝙞𝙧 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙎𝙞𝙭 𝙏𝙤𝙬𝙣𝙨, is still being exhibited at the @middleport_pottery Harper Street for the foreseeable future. Please do take a look and offer your feedback if you are in the vicinity!

“Search up ‘Stoke-on-Trent’ into YouTube, and you’ll be met with many videos in which people come to the city, present the worst elements to their audiences, and leave. They don’t take the time to truly investigate the layers of the city, instead adding to the pool of the base-level cliché. Consequently, this feeds into a loop whereby the representations of the city with the most clicks are what cultivate the audiences’ perceptions. Especially for those people who haven’t visited themselves, this then forms a perception bias for any future interaction with the city. People will see, within the city, what they are told the city really is like. This is a pattern that expands across the media landscape in its broadest sense.
The majority of these media producers offer an outsider-in point of view. My goal here is to offer a second narrative for Stoke, as someone who has lived in the area for most of my life. Whilst I agree that there are problems in regard to urban decay, drugs, crime, and so on, there are two sides to a coin, and this is true for most places in the UK. This is a sequence of prints of my personal experiences - a photographic realisation of the many interactions I had with the lovely people I encountered - as I endeavor to contribute to a growing, optimistic documentation of the community, life, and love in Stoke-on-Trent.
To say that my story of modern Stoke is objective would be to reject a universal truth about photography: there is an eye with a bias behind every camera. This exhibition is a subjective document of my experiences wandering the local streets, and I have no intention of hiding that. To photograph is to be in one place at one time. This is why I encourage you to critically explore and ask yourself, ‘What is the Stoke I know?’, informed by your own experiences.
These photographs were all made on 120 film, processed, and hand-printed in a darkroom.”

A series of darkroom prints from my recent project ‘A Breath of Fresh Air in the City of Six Towns’ is currently being exhibited at the @middleport_pottery museum!

Last semester, I decided to revise my A-Level Project (‘Stoke Odyssey’), with a more defined concept of what I was trying to do with my photography.

Stoke is often given a hard time in the media. Search up ‘Stoke-on-Trent’ on YouTube and you’ll find several examples of clickbait videos, where people will come, represent the bad sides of the city, and leave.

Whilst I acknowledge Stoke has many problems (drugs, crime, urban decay exe), there are 2 sides to a coin!

Like my college project, I took to the streets, parks, and estates in Stoke - interacting and collaborating with members of the community. These portraits are a selection of these encounters.

Thank you to the staff at Middleport for taking my project on, but even more so, the people of Stoke for trusting me to include them within my small archive the community!

This display will be open for an indefinite period of time, and will be open to the public from tomorrow.

Penkhull Wassail 2026:

Penkhull’s 12 annual revival of the wassailing tradition, hosted by @domesdaymorris, began with a procession through the streets (pausing for music and song), followed by handing out cider, and the blessing of an apple tree to ensure good harvest for the upcoming year, concluded with Morris Dancing around the local pubs (image 13).

In the church yard, an apple tree is fed with cider, and toast from the children (image 12).

I was inspired by @samwels.lens to invest in an Olympus PEN E-PL8 compact mirrorless camera, with an adapted CCTV lens. I’ve been using the festive period to play around with my new toy!

These are some pictures I made at the Sadler Gate Christmas Market, Nottingham Christmas Market, and Bromsberrow Way Christmas Lights (a charity fundraiser for the DougieMac Hospice, in Stoke-on-Trent).

I was reflecting with a coursemate the other day, about our shared experiences of our GCSE studies. We found common ground in our mutual studies of poems in Power and Conflict. Dispite not remembering much from those studies then, I recalled one poem: War Photographer, by Carol Ann Duffy.
Alone in a darkroom, a war photographer reflects on his work. Stanza 2 reads the following:

He has a job to do. Solutions slop in trays
beneath his hands, which did not tremble then
though seem to now. Rural England. Home again
to ordinary pain which simple weather can dispel,
to fields which don’t explode beneath the feet
of running children in a nightmare heat.

The photographer contrasts the places of war to rural England. It makes you think, as a photographer, about the horrors and dangers of war, in contrast to the life we take for granted, in safety.

This remembrance Sunday, I continued my tradition to photograph Newcastle-under-Lyme’s remembrance parade. During a sermon in St Giles’ Church, we were reminded of the dreams which our fallen soldiers (and those who suffer post-conflict) heroically sacrificed so we today can fulfuil ours.

Therefore, this remembrance, I am thinking about the sacrifices our heros made, the horrors they endeavoured; so I can chase my dreams as an upcoming image maker, with freedom, safety, and security.

“For your tomorrow, we gave our today,”

They Shall Not Grow Old.

The People’s Parade, Stoke-on-Trent.

Despite the unfortunate weather, around 1000 community participants paraded around Hanley today to celebrate 100 years since Stoke became a city - putting on a spectacular performance.

Thousands of fellow Stokies also gathered in the streets to join in with the centenary celebrations.

Here are a couple of photographs I was able to get among the action.

A fortnight ago, I was privileged enough to accompany my Great Granny (alongside my Great Aunt and Uncle) on a visit to the National Memorial Arboretum in Burton. We organised this trip as she wished to see the stretcher bearer statue at the Armed Forces Memorial. Her Bonpop (father), my Great Great Grandad, was himself a stretcher bearer during the Great War, part of the Royal Army Medical Corps.

She proudly told me stories about the war which her father had witnessed whilst we explored the arboretum (including how he won his medal of bravery for rescuing his fellow men whilst under fire), stopping along the way to appreciate the memorials, and the flora (image 9).

This trip came a couple weeks after I had made the trip to visit her, up in Sheffield, to learn a little bit more about our family history and heritage. Hearing the stories of my ancestors was not only empowering, but inspiring.

These 2 trips also made me reflect on what my other ancestors had achieved, such as their own contributions, both in WWI and WWII.

I choose to post these today, when Britain celebrates its 80th VE-Day, when I, like many, remember the generations who put their lives on the line in service for their country, for freedom, for democracy across Europe. A day to be proud of past and present serving men and women. A day to be proud of Britain. 🌹🇬🇧

For me, there is a phenomina which presents itself between the intersection of place and time. What makes any place more contemplative is to consider that which has happened in the same place, merely separated by the dimension of time. Think, what makes visiting a historical sight ever more extraordinary than simply seeing photos? To know that the very same environment you exist in at that moment has previously hosted a myriad of happenings of great, or maybe even not so great, significance, and your presence is merely a fleeting moment in the chain of time.

In this photographic piece, I explore the fourth dimension through the juxtaposition of conflict and peace. It is fascinating to me how some place so tranquil and unsuspecting may have once hosted energetic, and even deadly episodes in history.
I made this piece, from a series of experiments during my A Levels with @nulc_photography_alevel, by collecting archival imagery of the Cyprus Emergency (1955-59, UK vs EOKA, leading to Cypriot independence from the British), and re-photographing the landscapes in which they were shot, 60(ish) years on, during a summer visit to Cyprus. I physically collaged these together.

This piece is now on display in this years YOUNG FORMAT exhibition for @formatfestival @derbyquad, and I am so grateful to have this opportunity for the 2nd FORMAT festival running. On until 15.6.2025.

These were my final analogue prints from my autumn semester Exploring Analogue Photography module assignment. We were lucky to be presented the theme of ‘environment’, which allowed us vast freedom over our subjects. For this series, I aimed to explore the intersection between past and present within the landscape, and how our environment holds heritage, and take an alternate view of what one may consider our ‘build environment’.

This project led me on weekly drives up into the Peak District to the mystical Neolithic site of Arbor Low “Stonehenge of the Peaks”, a clock shape of fallen stones, once 40 upright slabs of limestone considered a place for prehistoric gatherings and ceremonies. An uncremated body was once found at the circles centre.

Each visit to the site felt like I was being introduced to a new character. I would realise new ways to photograph it, and I would bare witness to the temporary modifications made by visitors. (The flowers in photo 6 were eaten by sheep about 10 minutes later).

Initially wanting to re-explore the site after a fleeting trip up there for a 1st year A-level photoshoot, this project also led me to explore the works of several key practitioners, such as Paul Caponigro, Ansel Adams, and the late John Blakemore (who expressed the importance of revisiting and connecting with the environment you are photographing).

This is my first post for a series of photographs I made whilst in Canada during the summer of last year, which I finally got around to editing with the free time this winter break has handed to me. When I moved to Derby, one of my goals was to learn more about the history of the city and county. The brief ‘built environment’ for our digital photography module was the perfect excuse to pursue this, starting my endeavor at Derby’s Museum of Making, which exists on the site of the old Silk Mill, opened in 1721. One of many situated along the river Derwent (harvesting its power using water wheels), the site exists as one of many which now belongs to the UNSECO Derwent Valley Mills world heritage site, considered the birthplace of the modern factory system. Whilst talking to an employee there, I was told of another site, the Belper North Mill, and the concerns around the site’s deterioration.
This was the base in which my project would be based on, and throughout the past few weeks I have been visiting the site, exploring its history and current state.

Belper North Mill was first built in 1776 by Jedediah Strutt for cotton spinning and became one of the first factories to provide worker housing. It was also the site where Samuel Slater apprenticed at. He learned the workings of the factory before immigrating to Rhode Island, now considered the father of the American Industrial Revolution.

This project also explores the landmarks surrounding it. In the 1790’s, the Strutt’s built 4 parallel streets with houses for the workers to live in, the finest of which was Long Row - a prize-winning street and was used in Belper for street decorations to celebrate royal events (such as the coronation 1953). The 3 story houses on the North Side have a continuous sloping eaves line and have interlocking plans. Workers were ‘encouraged’ to worship, potentially being fined for failure, and were encouraged to grow their own crops and thrift. He also established facilities for the workers, like the Unitarian Chapel, a Nail shop, and a school which still operates today, after initial schooling in the mill’s attic.

From my own observations, I felt a range of opinions. It was disheartening to see the state the mill and streets are in today, also interesting to notice little segments of history dotted around. I also found it conflicting to see businesses operating within the mill.

Ensured I was back home in Newcastle-under-Lyme this weekend for this years Remembrance Sunday order of service at the cenotaph.

For me, Remembrance Day is not just a day to remember those who gave their lives for king and country, it too is a day to be proud of our veterans, proud of our ancestors, to be proud to be British.

It was refreshing to see so many people attending the service, from ex-military, current service men, to children wearing the medals of their great grandparents. I got to wear the medals of my great grandfather, Frank Connolly, who lived and fought the 2nd world war in Hong Kong, was captured, and survived the terribly harsh conditions as a POW in Japan.

Of course, Remembrance Day also brings into the spotlight key issues in our modern world. We think to those who still suffer in the face of conflict (on all sides), to those currently serving in our forces, and to an uncertain future ahead.

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning we shall remember them.”

Challenged with the concept of ‘performative portraiture’ I looked to match the age of analogue photography (and my own interest in (photography) history) with the visual signifiers of the dress, camera, and a 1946 edition of Picture Post (which in itself is credited for the early distribution of photojournalism). Photographed with a 5x4 camera.

During a 2 week trip to Canada, we went to see the @rodeo_bc at Roe Lake Rodeo Grounds, British Columbia. Developed as a sport to encourage different ranch families to come together and compete, rodeos are now enjoyed by hundreds of Canadians, despite the common misconception that cowboys/girls have always been a Southern US thing.

Sports include bull riding, breakaway roping, and team roping.

(No people or animals were seriously hurt)

@nscgnewcastle summer show 2024. So happy to see the products of several months of quite intense
coursework on display for @nulc_photography_alevel and @nscg_alevelmediastudies. On display is my Stoke Odyssey
documentary work, investigating the streets of the city of Stoke-on-Trent, in search of it’s true
character, form, and identity, following news reports of council bankruptcy. Also on display is
my continuation of my Stoke-on-Trent adventures, this time exploring around the outskirts of the
city, brought together in my Borderline Stoke project. Finally, two of my media coursework
pieces are on display (magazine adverts for the folk music genre).

I owe a lot to this college, and these courses. Alevel Photography has enabled me to appreciate
photography as an artform with an entire historical narrative behind it, rather than just its
commercial uses, and has significantly boosted my confidence in photographing. It is also through this course that I (and
others) have had our work displayed in public spaces.

I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to all who have helped me get to this point over the
past 2 years. The course lecturers, technicians, to everyone in both my 1st and 2
nd year classes
who gave me feedback and critiques, and to all my sitters who offered their time to contribute to
my work. Also, thanks to @homer.sykes who kindly offered me the chance to spend a day with him, giving me valuable feedback and
advice which I was able to apply to my own practice.

NSCG Culture Day 2024!

Last Wednesday, the Student Union at @nscgnewcastle hosted an afternoon of celebrations to honour diversity in the college community.

With the success which came of my photos of this event last year - despite only having a short period in my timetable to photograph, I decided to get stuck in and make these photos.

Carole’s portrait from my latest project Stoke Odyssey has been selected for exhibition at The Potteries Museum in Hanley. The description of the photograph reads:

“Photograph of a lady taken at the Longton Exchange. The photograph was taken as part of the entrant’s documentary project surrounding people in Stoke-on-Trent.”

Themed Life and Love in Stoke, this photograph won the under 18’s category, looking to demonstrate the day-to-day lives of people in the city, beyond the facade of negative representations the media creates of the city. Her commitment to reading the local news, and my overly pleasant experience with her, making this shot, I believe truly represents some of the love to be found in this city.

Note: to meet the criteria, printed photo has been manipulated.

Boris Johnson announced the 1st UK lockdown on the 23rd March 2020 (4 years ago today) in a desperate attempt to mitigate the rising number of Covid cases nationally.

I initially had plans to go on a school trip to France and Belgium, but it had to be cancelled as travel restrictions were imposed. It was through using the refunded money from this trip that I got my first (and current) DSLR Camera. At the time, it was nothing more than a fun toy to play with, not realising, 4 years later, how valuable these images would become. I started with a LOT of floral photos, taken in our 1 hour of restricted time outside, but I also began to inadvertently document my life (and that of my family) over the pandemic.

Reflecting back on these images, it is odd to think that social distancing became the ‘new norm’. I find these images contemplative, thinking back to my own experiences of the pandemic, the effects it had on my health, education etc.

These photos were all taken by me, or of me, during the COVID 19 lockdown!

Reflecting back on these images, it is odd to think that social distancing became the ‘new norm’. I find these images contemplative, thinking back to my own experiences of the pandemic, the effects it had on my health, education etc.

Whilst experimenting with more unique ways to represent my exam theme of ‘tranquil’, I wanted to take my work back into the darkroom and play around with alternate photography techniques. I created a series of chemigrams and water grams, with the intention of creating land-like forms and capture the movement of water in a more abstract manner.

Some of these outcomes can definitely be considered ‘happy accidents’, such as image 7, which reminds me of the collision of waves in the ocean on a stormy night.

When mind-mapping ideas for this new ‘tranquil’ project, I immediately cast my mind back to last summer when I visited the Landscape Trauma exhibition at the Centre for British Photography. Above all, it was @paul_seawright two selected photographs from his Sectarian Murders series which really seemed to stick with me.
I have always found it interesting how a landscape seems to hold its history. I think back a couple years when I visited the Auschwitz Birkenau Nazi camp in Poland, and the ominous atmosphere I felt whilst walking around, despite the (now) museum being so calm and quiet. It is this phenomenon which I wanted to investigate with this set of photographs.
A trip back to Poland is a little out my limits right now, so I decided to look more locally at the locations of infamous murder cases:

The case of Lesley Whittle - driven by greed and romance towards the military lifestyle, Donald Neilson kidnapped Lesley Whittle at gunpoint from her Shropshire home, demanding a ransom for her life, after she was to receive £80,000 from her father. She was found dead in an underground drainage shaft in Kidsgrove (photographed).

The A34 (Cannock Chase) murders - the bodies of Diana Taft and Margaret Reynolds were found by a rabbit hunter aside a water-logged ditch at Mansty Gulley. Another victim, Christine Darby, found under 1 mile away. Raymond Morris was convicted of the latter homicide, but believed to be responsible for the first 2 also.

The mystery of ‘Fred’ - an off-duty constable discovered a man’s skull when walking around the Newton Road area of Burton upon Trent. Despite many lines of enquiry, and an appeal for info on BBC’s Crimewatch, this case remains unsolved.

This is, of course, a more abstract take on ‘tranquil’, which I hope is visually communicated through the photographs, juxtaposed by their historical contexts.

Whether it’s the feeling of isolation, the calmness, or the reduced stimuli that brings tranquility to the night time, I also wanted to explore the ambiguity and intimate distance that light in the dark can provide.

Final shoot as part of my documentary of the streets of Stoke-on-Trent. Investigating the people, landscapes, and character - the layers of a city - I wanted to explore Stoke away from the often negative, somewhat hyperbolic representations given by the media. I wanted to look into the details that often go unnoticed, the history of the city, all away from Hanley which many, including myself, have already photographed.

In this shoot, I wanted to investigate Stoke-upon-Trent (not to be confused with Stoke-on-Trent) but also wanted to explore the ‘nicer’ suburban landscape, venturing into Penkhull
