Accessibility

Intellect is committed to ensuring that every part of its publishing programme is accessible, from submission to the finished product.

To this end, we are working to be compliant with the following guidelines and regulations.

European Accessibility Act

The European Accessibility Act comes into law on 28 June 2025. It is a wide-ranging piece of legislation, aiming to ensure that products and services sold in the European Union are accessible to all, especially disabled consumers.

Below are the steps Intellect is taking to comply with the Act. These measures will be applied across the business, and will not be limited to customers or collaborators in the EU.

  • For any backlist title which does not have an accessible ePUB available to purchase, customers may request that it be created. This is applicable to any product type. Please contact contact@intellectdiscover.com to request an accessible version of any product.

  • For products published after 28 June 2025, the following accessibility information applies to each format.

    • ePDF: Compatible with devices and software which can read pdfs. Alternative text for images. Bookmarks based on the table of contents for easy navigation. Hyperlinked table of contents and endnotes. Tagged with a logical reading order to assist screen readers.

    • Fixed-layout ePUB: Compatible with devices and software which can read EPUB 3. Alternative text for images. Hyperlinked table of contents and endnotes. Tagged with a logical reading order to assist screen readers. Font size, spacing, contrast, text justification, number of columns are not adjustable.

    • Reflowable ePUB: Compatible with devices and software which can read ePUB 3. Adjustable font size, spacing, contrast, text justification, number of columns. Alternative text for images. Hyperlinked table of contents and endnotes. Tagged with a logical reading order to assist screen readers.

  • In the future, we intend to display accessibility information prominently at a journal, article, book and chapter level on Intellect Discover, so that customers can assess whether a product would be accessible to them prior to purchase. For now, if you are unsure of the available formats of a title, please contact contact@intellectdiscover.com.

  • As standard, new books, chapters and articles will be made available as reflowable ePUB 3s; some highly visual material may use a fixed layout. For books and book chapters this will begin on 28 June; journal ePUB 3s will become available by July (projected).

  • All content produced after 28 June which contains audio will be accompanied by a transcript.

  • All video content produced after 28 June which may cause photosensitive seizures will contain a warning.

  • Pubkit, Intellect’s submission system, is being checked against WCAG standards, and the results will be made available once received.

  • All images on Intellect Discover will have alternative text (decorative images will include a blank alt attribute, as recommended by W3C).

  • intellectbooks.com will display accessibility summaries for books. It has also undergone an accessibility scan, which will be worked through methodically, ensuring the most urgent updates are made first.

  • From 28 June, accessibility summaries will be included in the ONIX, BITS (for books) and JATS (for journals) for all new products.

If further detail regarding this action plan is required, please contact Naomi Curston (naomi@intellectbooks.com).

Alternative text

From summer 2025, alternative text will be provided for all images on our website, unless it is not required (e.g. the image is purely decorative).

Layout

Our website is built with a responsive design so that it will adapt and reflow according to the device and browser size that you are using.

Our products

Our products are created with accessibility in mind. We have these measures currently in place:

Books

Print, ePDF and ePUB files are available for all our books. Books published from January 2018 onwards are available in ePUB 3 format; books published prior to this will be available in ePUB 2. If you would like to request an ePUB 3 for any title which does not currently have one available, please contact contact@intellectdiscover.com. All Intellect e-books are structured and tagged to ensure easy navigation and compatibility with assistive technologies, such as screen readers. Users can:

  • change the font and increase/decrease font size

  • reflow the text to fit any screen size

  • adjust colour and contrast to suit their preference

  • enable text-to-speech functionality

  • hyperlink within text.

Our e-books adhere to EPUB Accessibility 1.0 and are validated by Ace and DAISY to ensure accuracy of metadata and alternative text. All Intellect production editors have undertaken image description training from textBOX services. Our e-books are available on a variety of platforms, such as EBSCO, ProQuest, Bibliotech and VitalSource. EPUB Test  is a great resource for accessibility information about your chosen platform and/or reading system.

Our e-books are available on request from RNIB (UK) and Bookshare (US) via an automated ONIX feed. All requests will be answered within 1-5 working days. Digital rights management (DRM) restrictions, copy limits, privacy and licence terms (T&Cs) are applied by the platforms that provide access to our e-books. There are no additional licence terms on use once a file has been approved by RNIB (UK) or Bookshare (US). Copying and printing restrictions are dependent on the platform – the limits are usually 10 per cent of the book or one chapter (whichever is greater). We recommend using Adobe Digital Editions for reading ePUB and ePDF files. This can be used on many different devices, and has good access support, including support for high contrast, screen readers and keyboard shortcuts. Read Adobe Digital Editions’ accessibility statement.

Journals

Print and ePDF files are available for all our journal articles. From Summer 2020, all new journal content will be available in HTML format directly online through Intellect Discover, Intellect's content platform. All Intellect journal content published from August 2023 onwards includes alternative text for all visual and audio material. From summer 2025, all journal articles will be available as ePUB 3 files. See Intellect Discover's accessibility page for more details.
