Hi there!
I’m Yutong, the multimedia artist behind 1029 Creates. I was born and raised in Beijing, China, and came to the US to receive my college education in Fine Arts and Computer Science. After graduating from Brown University, I spent the first decade post-college in the tech industry. Like many others, I fell in love with ceramics during the pandemic, and rediscovered my passion to create. These days, I produce functional ceramics out of the Clay Corner, a pottery studio in Seattle, WA.
I am often inspired by funny animals and organic patterns, and these vastly different inspirations are reflected in my two distinct lines of work: whimsical animal-themed objects and colorful patterned wares. I use a mix of techniques, including but not limited to wheel throwing, hand building, slip casting, slip trailing and water etching. You can find on my instagram many process videos of how things are made.
I took my first ceramic lesson in 2022, and attended my first maker market in 2023. Nothing intrigues me more than observing how people react and interact with my pieces in person. I look forward to seeing you at craft fairs around the PNW :)
This is Coco, you might see him with us at outdoor markets :)
