April has arrived, Easter is also here and now the next block for our Star Scootin’ Quilt!

Our log cabin block.

We will make several of these blocks depending on which size you are going to make. I will be making 8. But you may wish to make more later to add a border of them to the outside of your quilt to make it into a larger quilt.

You will need to cut the following to make one block. Just cut 4 or 8 of each depending on which layout you have chosen to make.

White cut 1 x 3.5″ square (8)

Pop Colour 1 x 2″ x 6.5″ (8)

1 x 2″ x 8″ (8)

Dark Grey 1 x 2″ x 3.5″, (8)

1 x 2″ x 5″, (8)

1 x 2″ x 9.5″, (8)

1 x 2″ x11″ (8)

Light Grey 1 x 2″ x 5″ (8)

1 x 2″ x 6.5″ (8)

1 x 2″ x 8″ (8)

1 x 2″ x 9.5″ (8)

1 x 2″ x 11″ (8)

1 x 2″ x 12.5″ (8)

Following the diagram of the block above and the photos below start stitching out your block. Remember to press the seams to the outside of the block after sewing each strip on.

All Cut ready to sew
sew the first strip to the centre square
First strip onto square
second strip onto square

Sew the next strip onto the opposite side of the first strip, continue around as the top diagram
adding the pop

final block. Make 4 or 8 depending which layout and size you are making.

I hope you all enjoy making this block. I have and will continue to make the odd one here and there to get them all done. I have a week off my real job coming up so I am looking forward to doing some sewing and playing with my crafting area and I have a special quilt to quilt for a friend. I will show photos as I go. Star Scootin’ block 2

Sticky

Now without wasting anymore time here are the details for Block 2!

This is an 8 pointed star and requires us to make some units with ¼ square triangles. I like to use the EZ geese ruler for these, you can use an equivalent or just cut them from a square. It also requires us to make 4 square in a square units and the centre is just a standard square.

Cutting Instructions with the specialty rulers

Using your light grey cut 1 x 4.5″ square

Cut 1 strip of 2.5″ of Colour pop

Cut 2 strips of 2.5″ of white.

Cut 1 strip 3 3/8″ black then cut 4 x 3 5/16th inch squares of black.

Place one strip of white and the Pop colour with right sides together and using the ez geese ruler then cut 8 QST

with remaining white strips cut 16 HST with the ez geese ruler.

Cutting Instructions without special rulers

Cut 1 x 4.5″ square from light grey

cut 2 squares of the Colour Pop and the white at 5 3/16″ then cut diagonally twice to give a total of 8 QST

Cut 8 x 2 7/8″ squares and then cut diagonally once to give a total of 16 HST

To assemble the units and the blocks. Sew the QST triangles together along the shorter side making sure you put the right sides together and sew all in the same direction. Press seams towards the darker side. Butting seams together sew the units together.

Fold the black square and finger press to form a line down the centre. place the point of the triangle on this point so it will be centred when sewn. Sew triangles on opposite sides then press seams towards the outer of the unit. Repeat for the other sides for all four units.

layout the units and then sew together with the webbing method to complete the block.

The next block will be ready for over the easter period. It will be one we will be needing multiple of so you can either do all of them or just gradually do them as we go along over the year.

So until next time have fun, relax and enjoy the special moments.

Wendy.

Last months block

Star Scootin’ block 1

Sticky

Morning all!

The time has come to start cutting and stitching the first block. I am sorry this block is around a week late. I will make sure the next block is published on the last week of this month.

To be fair I wanted to show you a new method for doing half square triangles from a strip of fabric even if you do not have the special rulers. It’s revolutionary and exciting! It takes away those 7/8” cuttings. Yay!

So lets get to it!

You will need to cut 1 x 3.5″ strip of each of the following:-

  • Black
  • Wow (Your colour highlight) mine is hot pink
  • light grey
  • dark grey
  • Background (mine is white

If using a ez geese ruler or an equivalent use these cutting instructions:

Using the Wow fabric strip place over the light grey strip with right sides facing, cut 4 HST
Cut 4 x HST of the Dark and 4 x HST of the light grey
Cut 4 x 3.5" squares of black
Cut 4 x 3.5" QST of the White or your chosen Background colour.
Hst with the ez geese ruler

If you do no have any specialty rulers let me explain how you can do the same magic trick:

You will need to cut 4 x 3.5" squares of black
4 x (3.5 x 6.5") rectangles of white
then you will need to cut rectangles of the following
the Wow and the light grey with right sides facing each other 2 x (3.5" x 4.5") rectangles
then you will need 2 x (3.5" x 4.5") rectangles of the Dark and Light grey.

Now comes the clever part! Lets start with the sewing of the HST's first.

Using the Wow and the light grey fabric. Rule 2 lines on the rectangles as follows for the HST which will form the centre of the block. , these will be your sewing lines

the black lines are sewing lines and the red line is the cutting line

After marking the sewing lines on the fabric. Sew along both lines, cut down the centre and trim your seam to ¼”. Press your unit to make your HST. This method gives us 2 HST,

Now for the Flying Geese unit.

You will cut the triangles from the rectangles using your ruler as per the photo diagrams. Then sew the flying geese unit. Remember to always do one side first before the next. I always do the left side then the right but as long as you are consistent it will be fine.

Stitch along the highlight line.

We will make the centre of the block by joining the Hst units to make a pinwheel. I suggest that you lay it out to make sure you have them all the right way.

Now to assemble the block. I like to lay my block out and use the Webbing technique https://www.elmstreetquilts.com/2015/10/quilting-tip-webbing.html this is a very good tutorial for the technique.

After laying out your block, assemble the centre first. remember to unpick the centre stitches so you can pinwheel the centre so it is not as bulky and it will lay nicely when flat.

I am looking forward to seeing all of your finished blocks so don’t forget to post them on FB and on instagram and tag them with #starscootinQAL

Remember if you need more clarification with any of this please ask the question, leave a comment on the post of in the wehago designs quilting community facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/355989734552807

So keep on quilting and have fun with the Star Scootin’ Quilt along.

Til next post,

Wendy.

Winter/spring mystery part 4

Sticky

I trust you are all enjoying yourselves at the moment. I’m happy I’m finding my way back to my creative space and self.

How about you?

This is our final block before we can start to assemble the quilt top. I will give you the alternative settings so you can decide on which layout suits or extensions to make quilt bigger with our final post.

We will be making 4 triangle blocks to finalise the centre block. You can either make your own template or just mark straight on your fabric and cut.

From the dark fabric cut 8 rectangles at 14⅛” x 3½”

From light a cut 2 rectangles at 9⅞” x 5¼”

From Medium b cut 2 rectangles at 9⅞” x 5¼”

Now lets prepare the dark fabric squares into wedges. I will show you a diagram to help with this. Put your fabrics in pairs right sides together. It will be easier to cut two pairs at a time for each block.

As per diagram above, mark out the rectangle as follows:- then you can cut to size.

From the top right hand side measure in 3⅜” and mark. You can then cut the excess fabric off on the right hand side from that point to the bottom right hand corner. then cut the excess fabric from the 3⅜” point to the bottom left hand corner to form a wedge.

Now place the medium b and the light a fabrics right sides together with the medium on the bottom. Using rotary cutter, cut fabrics diagonally from top right corner to bottom left corner to form 4 wedges of each fabric.

The piecing of the block is as follows. Stitch the straight edge of the light a and medium b wedges together to form a triangle. Next add the dark triangles to either side of this triangle to form our block.

Your triangle should look like this.

Now don’t forget to let me know how you are going with this. I love to see your progress. Please don’t forget to post photos of your progress in our group on facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/355989734552807 or tag me on instragam.

So until the next post happy sewing, quilting and creating. Stay safe, stay healthy and have fun.

Winter Mystery Quilt Along!

Sticky

Are you all ready to join in?

I hope everyone is well and having lots of fun. It has certainly been a very strange and eventual last 12 months for me personally. I am juggling a full time job and continuing my passion of quilting and sewing with you all.

I have decided to create a winter mystery quilt along, I do have some kits available which I have added to the website, you are also welcome to join us at https://www.facebook.com/groups/355989734552807/ and share in the progress and fun.

I have created some kits and they are available for $120 aus including postage within Australia. If you wish to purchase a kit you can do so here https://wehagodesigns.com.au/shop?olsPage=products%2Fwinter-mystery-quilt&page=1&sortOption=descend_by_created_at .

Now let me give you the details you will need if you want to use your own fabric and join us in this little venture.

Wow 1 mt (this includes your binding)
Dark 1.75mt (this inlcudes your borders)
medium a 45cm
medium b 25 cm
light a 50 cm
light b 45cm
background. 80cm

Now I do know a lot of you are excited to do this so i will give you the cutting instructions for the first clue and block . I do plan on trying to give you a block a week but it could run to nearer 2 weeks if i get snowed under at home and work.

Clue 1

I like my borders in one piece so i would like you to cut from your dark fabric 4 strips at 6.5″ for the whole length of your fabric not the width. then place these aside for later.

From your Wow fabric cut 32 x 3.5″ squares

Background 32 x 3.5″ and cut 16 x 4 7/8″ squares if you prefer to cut 5″ and trim later go ahead

Light A fabric cut 16 x 4/78″ squares

Medium b fabric Cut 16 x 3.5″

Light B Fabric cut 16 x 3.5″

Taking the 16 4 7/8 squares mark a line diagonally down the centre and sew a 1/4″ either side of line, then cut down the line and press carefully to create your 3.5″ hst units. If you chose to do the blocks larger trim down to size .

We will now sew these units together to form blocks. A total of 8

please use this as your guide. Feel free to ask any questions in our group.

legend Wow = yellow, Background = Grey, Light a = blue, Medium B = green (centres) Light B = turquoise.

I look forward to seeing all of your blocks coming together over the next week .

Until then have lots of fun

Wendy.

Winter/spring mystery Part 3!

Standard

Hello! Are you ready for your second last block for this quilt? I hope all is going well with you. We will be making four blocks for this week. I changed up the dimensions a little to make it a bit easier for us all in the cutting. I hate using part fractions so I have reworked this so its a little easier and quicker for us all, it will need us to trim the block later. Now lets do some cutting

Using your background cut 2 x 13″ squares and cut each square diagonally once to give 4 triangles in total

From the Medium A cut 4 strips 2.5″ x 18.25″

From Light A cut 4 strips 2.25″ x 14″

From Light B cut 4 strips 2.25″ x 9.75″

From Medium B cut 2 x 4.75″ squares and cut diagonally to give 4 triangles

Take each strip and fold in half to make a crease in the centre of each strip or triangle. Matching the centre points join the medium a to light a strip add light b to light a and finish with a triangle of the medium b. This can then be added to the background triangle to make a square. This square should be trimmed to finish at 12.5″ and will look like this.

I am hoping to give you the next block on Sunday and then later next week I will be able to give you the final instructions for completing the quilt with all of the variations and the extensions to make a larger quilt if you like.

Please leave me a comment and let me know how you are doing with this and if you are enjoying the blocks.

Thanks for joining and being so patient with me. Mentally I haven’t been so well this year. Today is RUOK day and today I am mostly ok. I hope you are all ok so don’t forget to ask often RUOK? It is very important for everyone to know that someone is there for you.

Take care and happy quilting,

Wendy

My finished block.

Winter Mystery Part 2!

Standard

I hope you are all staying safe, I have been extremely busy over the past couple of months and have really been just trying to keep my mental state of mind as free as possible. Anyway I am surfacing with new focus and ready for spring and the getting out of stage 4 lockdown soon.

So without any further ado here is next part of the quilt.

Using the Dark Blue cut one 6

legend:- dark blue centre is dark, yellow is WOW, light blue is light a and aqua is medium a

I like to cut the fabrics a little bigger and then cut them down after sewing to the correct size.

This block will finish at 24″ and we will only be making one block.

I hope you have lots of fun with this one. I will be back on Thursday to continue for your next clue. In the meantime have lots of fun.

I will be off to work today please take time to enjoy the sunshine and the birds singing.

Happy quilting

Wendy

Marsupials and Monotremes Blog Hop! And Giveaway!

Standard
Look at the gorgeous colours in the Amazing Range of Fabrics!

Yes, Its here again! Did you hear my squeal of delight?

When I opened this parcel, for me to participate again with Blog Hop. We are celebrating the release of the latest range https://www.kkfabrics.com.au/product-category/amanda-brandl-fabrics/monotremes-marsupials-8018/ by Amanda Brandl https://amandabrandl.com.au and https://www.kkfabrics.com.au/I hope you have been following all of the other bloggers on this hop.

I love a challenge, and I couldn’t resist this little opportunity. I knew exactly how what type of quilt I would make using this range of Australian Animals and Floral.

For those who have followed me for a little while will know I have an obsession with the Creative Grids Hexagon Trim Tool. You can find a tutorial here https://youtu.be/Uy8FPtNJc5Y  I am always looking to find other combinations ways to create and showcase fabrics with this excellent tool. This time I decided to create an eye spy quilt. Initially I was only making a small quilt but fell totally head over heels so I added borders to make the centre fabrics float and pop! Now Hubby is claiming this quilt to rest on his chair.

Cutting of Hexagons

Eye Spy blocks about to be created

I received 30cm of each piece of fabric in the range. There are total of 20 fabrics in the Marsupial and Monotremes range, 10 being florals and 10 Fabrics consisting of Wombats, Echidnas and Platypus, these fabrics look so divine with each other.

Off to my creative space with my rotary cutter, my hexagon trim tool and my normal ruler and these fabrics I set about cutting hexagons and strips ready for sewing. Once the Hexagons were all sewn and laid out I proceeded to sew the rows together. These look hard and complicated but its really an easy simple process.

Blocks made ready for joining

One Row complete

Once the rows were assembled I couldn’t help but take a photo on the line before the basting and quilting process took place.

Auditioning the Aurifil is such a delight

My Bush Beauties Quilt measures 80″ squared and was quilted using 3 different 50 wt Aurifil thread colours on my domestic machine using free motion quilting. I love to quilt new life into a quilt top and bring out different aspects of the quilt by creating shapes and textures in the shapes of the quilt top. It could be made smaller with less or no borders or larger with wider borders of the addition of plain hexagons in the middle.

So without any further of ado I will leave you with some photos of the completed quilt. Please scroll on down and look at the photos don’t forget to leave a comment as I have a little giveaway of the leftovers from this quilt. It will be enough to make a small quilt with added fabric or a mini. Just be sure to leave a comment and I will make the draw on the 6th of February with an announcement here.
