ECM File Format (Mesh)

ECM (Evercoast Mesh) is Evercoast’s proprietary container format for playback of volumetric mesh geometry. ECM files are used across multiple rendering pipelines and support flexible configurations of geometry, textures, and audio.

All mesh geometry in ECM files is compressed using Corto, a high-efficiency open-source geometry codec developed by Meta, enabling compact, performant playback.

Depending on the quality setting and pipeline, ECM files may either:

• Reference external video and audio assets (Premium and Pro (Cloudbreak)), or
• Contain all data embedded in a single file (Pro (Mavericks))

Render Qualities

Premium Quality

Premium quality renders separate geometry from textures and audio. The ECM contains compressed mesh data and references external assets.

Components:

• ECM file
  • Contains Corto-compressed mesh geometry
  • References external texture and audio
• MP4 file
  • Encodes texture as video
  • Includes audio (MP3 format)
  • Alternative: WebP texture sequence + separate audio file

Frame Rates:

• 30 FPS source → ECMs for both 15 FPS and 30 FPS
• 15 FPS source → ECM for 15 FPS only

Playback:

• Requires Evercoast Web Player or engine plugins (Unity, Unreal)

Pro Quality Variants

Evercoast generates two distinct types of Pro quality ECMs based on the rendering platform:

Pro (Cloudbreak)

• Same structure as Premium
• Corto-compressed geometry
• References external MP4 for texture and audio
• Multi-file output

Pro (Mavericks)

• Fully self-contained ECM file
• Corto-compressed geometry
• Embedded texture image sequence
• Embedded audio
• Single-file output
