Welcome!

I want this newsletter to be a place where we can discuss, lament, and — most importantly — organize to keep our country safe from authoritarianism. Thank you for being on the ground floor of building this growing Salty community.

We are in a dark time in our nation’s history. Too many of our leaders are unsure of what to do, how to communicate and where to go. Our legacy media has either checked out or bent the knee because it is owned by rich men (and a few women) with business interests that have nothing to do with the First Amendment. Our allies are terrified and our democracy is threatened.

The reason I write this daily newsletter is because I believe with every fiber of my being that the way to engage effectively is to speak truth to power, even if it means breaking a few eggs or ticking off a few people. I’ve spent decades in the political and media trenches and I’ve learned that the most important thing you can do is to communicate your position — authentically and forthrightly. I hope you join in this conversation by leaving a comment, dropping a note in the chat or tuning into my Salty Live chats with newsmakers and thought leaders.

I want to hear from you whenever you have something to say. If you agree with me, great. If you think I’m way off base, I want to hear that too. (I spent many years as the in-house liberal at Fox News. Trust me, it’s impossible to hurt my feelings.)

Whether you’re a free subscriber or are paying to read these posts, I am so glad that you’re here. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for subscribing and, most importantly, thank you for playing a part in ensuring our democracy works for all of us.

Subscribe

Subscribe to get access to the newsletter and publication archives. You don’t need to be a paid subscriber to read most of what I write. As you can imagine, there are only 24 hours in a day and I spent an awful lot of them trying to bring the best content to you that I can, while also running a consulting firm, co-founding and running a national non-profit and being a wife and mom — so if you can afford a few bucks a month for a paid subscription, I would appreciate it.

For Paid Subscribers

This Substack is reader-supported and I could not devote as much time and care to it without the support of paid subscribers. I’ve spent more than 20 years working in cable news and I have seen how soundbites and the drive for ratings gin up outrage and stifle thought-provoking discussion. If you want to invest in building a community that values authentic, common-sense analysis, I’m hopeful that you’ll consider becoming a paid supporter. Paid subscribers will also be invited to virtual happy hours, group chats and video #AMA chats, which I occasionally attach to the paid portion of newsletters.
