Our Mock Trial students put their skills to the test in the Columbia Region competition last Saturday! Throughout the full-day event, which consisted of three rounds, they practiced presenting clear arguments, examining witnesses, and thinking quickly under pressure, skills that require focus, preparation, and confidence. They are heading to the next level.

60 Richland Northeast Seniors Named “Young & Gifted”

At Richland Northeast High School, we often talk about the power of the “village.” This week, that village grew even larger as we celebrated a remarkable milestone: 60 of our seniors were officially recognized by the Columbia Urban League during their annual Young & Gifted Awards.

The Young & Gifted program is a prestigious tradition that has spanned nearly four decades. It is more than just a ceremony; it is a statewide spotlight on African American high school seniors who demonstrate exceptional preparation, performance, and perseverance.

What Does it Mean to be “Young & Gifted”?

The Columbia Urban League selects honorees based on their excellence across several pillars:

  • Academics: Maintaining a 3.0 GPA or higher.
  • Leadership: Serving as role models within the school and community.
  • The Arts & Athletics: Excelling in creative and physical disciplines.
  • STEM: Highlighting students who are paving the way in science and technology.

For our 60 Cavaliers, this recognition serves as a “confidence enhancer,” a term often used by Urban League President James T. McLawhorn, Jr. to describe the boost students feel when their hard work is validated by the broader community.
