What If America?
In the near future, all American citizens and permanent residents are required to identify their sub-nationalities due to the blurring of national borders and identities.
Flags of America speculates on the future of personal identity and nationality in terms of individuals and how the government classifies them. Terms such as Japanese-American, German-American, and Korean-American have become part of everyday life, but what happens when we start identifying ourselves as parts of a whole instead of as one, emphasizing our differences in culture and origin? The project is the fragmented iterations of the American flag combined with flags of other countries in the world—either those that have experienced American presence and occupation, or those listed within the U.S. census. Countries without any affiliation, population, or experiencing any expedition from and by the United States are not included within the list of flags that can be chosen.
