How to Restore PowerPoint Presentation
- Download, install, and run the DEMO version of Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint.
- Select the damaged .pptx/*.ppt file.
- Run the analysis of the damaged PPTX file.
- Export restored data to a new PowerPoint presentation - available in the full version.
How to Open Corrupted PPTX File for Free
If you need to fix a damaged PowerPoint file, then the full version of Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint will allow you to do this in a few simple steps. Fixing PowerPoint files occurs by copying the corrected data from the damaged .pptx file to a new PowerPoint project. The tool doesn’t fix or modify the existing PPTX file. All recovered data transfers to a new PowerPoint presentation. Revised data from a damaged PPTX file can be exported to a new PowerPoint presentation.
Practical testing of damaged PowerPoint presentation recovery: comparison of software and online services
Recovery Toolbox systematically conducts independent testing of software and online tools designed to recover PowerPoint presentations created in Microsoft Office. The purpose of these tests is to determine how effectively each solution copes with recovering data from real damaged files, as well as to identify ways to improve the quality and speed of the process in our own services and programs.
The testing is based on real user materials uploaded by customers via the cloud-based PowerPoint presentation recovery platform: https://powerpoint.recoverytoolbox.com/online/. Such tests are conducted on average once or twice a year, which allows us to track trends and identify the strengths and weaknesses of various recovery methods.
For analysis, at least 300 presentations are selected in each test cycle, differing in format (.pptx, .ppt), Microsoft PowerPoint version, size, and type of damage. Files can have a variety of defects, from broken slide structures and distorted images to lost text data and damaged macros.
Real users send materials that have been damaged as a result of a variety of factors — incorrect program shutdown, saving failures, damage to data carriers, or virus attacks. This selection makes the testing as close as possible to real-life conditions and allows us to objectively assess which solutions are truly capable of restoring the presentation to working order.
Preparation and selection of test files for testing PowerPoint presentation recovery
For testing, we used the most diverse set of damaged PowerPoint presentations possible. The files were not filtered or pre-sorted in any way — absolutely everything that had been downloaded in the weeks leading up to the test was included. This approach allowed us to make the experimental conditions as close as possible to real-life scenarios, where the user needs to recover data without any prior preparation.
The test set included presentations with different types of damage:
- files that cannot be opened at all;
- documents with partially damaged slide structure;
- presentations with lost graphic elements or formatting;
- files with damaged embedded media objects;
- documents that require a password to be entered.
The set also included presentations created in different versions of PowerPoint (from old *.ppt formats to modern *.pptx), with different sizes and structures. We deliberately did not exclude password-protected files in order to assess how the utilities cope with such cases.
Software and services involved in the test
During testing, we checked the performance of both desktop programs and cloud-based online services for recovering presentations.
These included:
- Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint – https://powerpoint.recoverytoolbox.com/
- Online version of Recovery Toolbox – https://powerpoint.recoverytoolbox.com/online/
- PowerPoint Repair Kit + OnlineFile.Repair – https://onlinefile.repair/powerpoint
- OnlineFileRepair.com – https://onlinefilerepair.com/powerpoint
- SecureRecovery® for PowerPoint
- DataNumen PowerPoint Recovery
- Stellar Repair for PowerPoint
- Free built-in Open and Repair feature in PowerPoint for Microsoft 365
Each utility and service were tested using the same set of test files. This ensured a fair comparison and allowed us to objectively evaluate:
- How accurately the original structure of the presentation is restored;
- The preservation of text, graphics, tables, and charts;
- The correctness of formatting and design template restoration;
- the program's ability to work with passwords and partially damaged data;
- the time required to process the document.
Thanks to this approach, we obtained a clear comparison that shows which solutions are best at recovering PowerPoint files under different conditions.
Results of practical testing of tools for recovering PowerPoint files
During the study, the results of various programs and online services designed to recover PowerPoint presentations were collected and analyzed. All the indicators obtained were systematized and entered into a comparative table, which made it possible to objectively evaluate the effectiveness of each solution.
The table reflects how successfully a particular utility or web service coped with the recovery task, taking into account both the degree of damage to the original file and its complexity (the presence of animations, embedded multimedia, graphic elements, and complex layouts).
This approach helps not only to determine the best tool overall, but also to choose the optimal option for a specific scenario — whether it is recovering simple slides or complex projects with a large amount of multimedia data.
Below is a summary comparison table obtained as a result of testing.
| Service or program | % of files successfully recovered | Price for recovering 1 file | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online service Recovery Toolbox https://powerpoint.recoverytoolbox.com/online/ | ~71% | $10 per 1 GB | Universal utility for all devices and systems. |
| Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint | ~69% | $25 | Only for Windows |
| Online service Online.repair | ~68% | $10 per 1 GB | In addition to the service, there is a Windows tool: PowerPoint Repair Kit |
| Online service OnlineFileRepair.com | ~67% | $5 per 1 GB | |
| SecureRecovery® for PowerPoint | ~23% | $59.99 | There is an online service |
| DataNumen PowerPoint Repair | ~17% | $129.95 | There is a batch mode for processing large numbers of PowerPoint files |
| Stellar Repair for PowerPoint | ~11% | $59 | Crashes very often |
| Built-in Open and Repair feature | ~7% | Free | Works well for simple damage |
Additional information and notes:
- DataNumen PowerPoint Repair supports processing multiple damaged presentations at once, which is convenient for mass file recovery. Batch mode saves time by eliminating the need to load each document separately.
- The SecureRecovery® for PowerPoint license is comparable in price to the cost of recovering a single file through an online service. This may not be cost-effective if you only need to recover a single document, but it is cost-effective for large volumes of work.
- Stellar Repair for PowerPoint often freezes during operation and sometimes displays uninformative or confusing error messages, which can complicate the recovery of presentations for inexperienced users.
- The standard Open and Repair feature built into PowerPoint is suitable for fixing minor damage, such as minor saving errors or damage to the file structure but not the content. However, it is usually insufficient for serious damage.
Requirements:
- Windows 98/Me/2000/XP/Vista/7/8/10/11 or Windows Server 2003/2008/2012/2016 and above
- Installed Microsoft PowerPoint

Online help:
Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint (Download) is a compact, fast and easy to use tool that will help you recover data from damaged Microsoft PowerPoint files in the PPT or PPTX (for PowerPoint 2007 and 2022) format. Since the software is intended for a very wide general audience, absolutely no prior recovery experience is required to successfully extract presentation data from a corrupted file and send it to PowerPoint for editing and saving. The developers of the program went at great lengths to drastically simplify the interface of the program and make it as self-explanatory and intuitive as at all possible. However, we also created this manual that explains the basics of using Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint, so please refer to this document prior to using the program or contacting technical support with an issue.
In case Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint cannot recover your presentation data, feel free to use the Send source file command from the main program menu. The program will attach the current file to a new email message (using the default email client) and send it directly to the development team. Once the file is received by the company's technical support team, they will attempt to recover your data and will use this opportunity to improve the program's recovery engine. They will contact you as soon as possible with an update on the results of their effort.
Note that the recovery process may take some time, as presentation files can be quite large and contain lots of media files of different types. Therefore, the duration of each step directly depends on the size of the PPT/PPTX file being processed and the speed of your processor.
Below is a detailed usage guide for Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint. Please read it attentively before using the program - it provides answers to a number of typical questions about the program. Should you still have questions about Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint, please do not hesitate to contact our support department. We will be glad to assist you with your problem.
1. Selection of a damaged file
The first step of the wizard allows you to select the damaged file you want to recover data from. This can be done in one of the following ways:
- By entering the name of the damaged PPT/PPTX file and its path into the input field located in the center of the program screen;
- By using the standard dialog that can be opened by clicking an icon to the right of the input field;
- By selecting one of the previously used files from the dropdown list that can be opened by clicking a small button with a downward arrow in the right part of the input field.
Once the file has been selected, you can proceed to the next step by clicking Next.
2. Analysis of the damaged presentation file and extraction of media files
This step of the wizard is 100% automated. Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint will scan the structure of the specified presentation file and extract all the images and media objects it has managed to detect. The duration of this process depends only on the complexity and size of the file being recovered and the speed of your computer. At the end of this stage, the program will display additional information about file recovery.
Please note that since Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint passes recovered presentation elements to Microsoft PowerPoint for editing and saving, it must be installed on your computer at the time of recovery. The software works identically for PPT and PPTX files and saves both the presentation and all media files to a separate folder on your hard drive. You can view the extracted items after the end of the recovery process.
Charts from PowerPoint 2007-2022 files will be inserted into reconstructed presentations as bitmap images. However, you can also use Microsoft Excel for this purpose (it must be installed on your computer) - the program will open a new Excel workbook and will paste the recovered charts there. You can then edit or copy/paste them directly into PowerPoint.
At this point, you can click Transmit to send the recovered data to PowerPoint, click Exit to stop using the recovery wizard or go back to the file selection step using the Back button.
3. Transfer of the recovered files to PowerPoint
Once you click Transmit at step 2, Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint will do the following:
- Open the restored presentation in PowerPoint (the process may take a while as the program processes each presentation slide by slide)
- Open charts in Microsoft Excel
- Open the folder with recovered media files and images
You can now edit your presentation and save it under a new name in a safe location.
As you see, using Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint is a snap. Just follow the instructions and the program will take care of the rest. If you, however, have any issues with the program, our customer support department will always be glad to assist you!

Benefits of the full version of Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint
The benefits of buying the full version of Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint, allowing you to repair corrupted .pptx and .ppt files used in PowerPoint presentations:
- Increased Success in Recovering Data: The free version might have limitations on the complexity of corruption it can address. The full version offers the possibility of saving recovered data into a new PowerPoint presentation.
- Complete Presentation Recovery: The full version may allow recovery of all aspects of your presentation, including text, formatting, multimedia files (images, videos, sounds) and even charts recreated using Excel.
Full Version Advantage: Saving Recovered Presentations (Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint).
While the free DEMO of Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint can analyze corrupt presentations, its most significant limitation lies in its inability to export the recovered data. Here's how the full paid version bridges that gap:
Export and Save Recovered Presentations:
- The Crucial Advantage: The free DEMO might allow you to analyze the corrupt presentation of the recovered content. However, the full version grants the essential ability to export the recovered data and save it as a usable PowerPoint file (.pptx or .ppt format). It allows you to integrate the recovered content into Microsoft PowerPoint and continue working on your presentation.
- Flexibility in Saving: The full version might offer the option to save the recovered data in the newer .pptx format (used by PowerPoint 2007 and later) and the older .ppt format (used by PowerPoint 97-2003). It ensures compatibility with different PowerPoint versions you might be using.
Benefits of Saving Recovered Presentations:
- Preserve Your Work: By exporting and saving the recovered data, you can get back on track with your presentation. You won't lose valuable content due to file corruption.
- Editing and Refinement: Once saved as a usable PowerPoint file, you can edit, refine, and format the recovered content within the familiar PowerPoint environment.
- Peace of Mind: Knowing you can recover and save your presentations offers peace of mind, especially when dealing with essential presentations containing critical information.
Remember:
- While the free DEMO provides valuable insight into the potential for recovery, the full version allows you to utilize the recovered data by exporting and saving it as a usable PowerPoint presentation.
You can decide if the full version's saving capabilities justify the purchase by evaluating the severity of your file corruption and the importance of the data you need to recover.
The advantages of the registered full version of Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint for Windows compared to the online version (Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint Online) for recovering corrupt presentations:
Full Version (Windows):
- Potentially Higher Recovery Success: Due to its dedicated software installation, the full version might employ more powerful recovery algorithms. It could lead to a higher chance of salvaging complex or severely corrupted presentations.
- Offline Recovery: The full version works independently on your Windows PC without relying on an internet connection. It can be beneficial if you have large presentations or are concerned about uploading sensitive data to the cloud.
Online Version (Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint Online):
- Device Agnostic: A significant advantage of the online version is its accessibility. It works on any device with a web browser, including phones, tablets, and MacBooks. It allows you to recover presentations regardless of operating system or device limitations.
- Faster for Minor Corruption: The online version might offer a quicker solution for minor corruption issues as there's no software to download and install.
- Potentially Lower Cost: The online version might have a different pricing structure than the full version. In some cases, it could be a more cost-effective option for occasional use.
Choosing Between Them:
- The severity of Corruption: If the presentation is severely corrupted, the full version's potentially more powerful recovery algorithms might be a better choice.
- Frequency of Use: Consider how often you might need to recover presentations. The online version's potential cost advantage might be more appealing if it's rare. For frequent use, the full version's features and potential for higher recovery success could justify the investment.
FAQ-Wiki:
Question:
Why can't the program add an object to a presentation and saves it separately as a file in a separate folder?
Answer:
If the program cannot correctly insert an object into a PowerPoint presentation, these media files (images, videos, Excel tables and such) will be saved to a separate folder.
When users insert objects into a presentation, they often perform complex conversions for this content to be rendered correctly (images, videos, charts, Excel tables and such). When recovering data from PPT and PPTX files, it's not always possible to accurately and correctly insert an object, Excel table or media file back into the presentation.
In order to keep this data, Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint saves embedded objects as separate files in a separate folder.
The user can then insert the saved files into the recovered presentation manually and perform the required conversion of inserted objects.
Question:
How does the desktop version differ from the online service in terms of recovery quality?
Answer:
The recovery quality in the desktop version of Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint and in the online service is exactly the same.
Question:
What types of damage to PPTX files cannot be recovered?
Answer:
There are various types of file damage, but often fatal cases occur when deleted files are incorrectly restored in Windows (restoring files after emptying the Recycle Bin) or after incorrect restoration of a damaged HDD. In these cases, the contents of PPTX files are completely replaced and the PowerPoint data in these files is no longer available. Thus, there is nothing left to recover.

job done succesfuly. thank you

nice
Very good. I recommend it.
best to use great app
Nice app, resolved my issue by recovering a Powerpoint file from a CD.
I hired the service to recover a PowerPoint file with more than 80 slides.
Only 8 pasted figures were recovered, which were public and easily accessible.
All the written content I produced was not recovered.
I was very dissatisfied with the service, which is paid.
This should be made clear to everyone in advance, that is, recovery is not guaranteed. This is only stated at the end, when the minimal recovery of the file is sent.
We're looking for a complete service, not a partial one. If that were the case, the charge itself should be partial.

I was working in a car on my computer. My file was on my Toschiba portable storage linked on my PC with an USB cable. Internet was given by my smartphone, we were driving on a french highway. I added many slides on my powerpoint and I saved my work many times during the journey. After the last slide, I recorded one last time and I shut down my PC as usual and before removed my portable storage (1 To). At home, I used my big PC on my worktable : I put my portable storage with the USB link, I found my files but Powerpoint refuse to open it.
I was using the PowerPoint all day and when I finished for the day, it said something about a new version of the presentation and then all of a sudden I could not open it and it said that it was damaged and not repairable
Very good recoverd. Thanks a lot!!!
The presentation is poorly restored.
The images were not inserted into the presentation, but saved in a separate archive.
I had to add each picture separately and fit it to the page.
Hello. I use Windows11 and OneDrive on an ASUS Zenbook. For some reason, there is the occasional time when I cannot 'wake up' the computer by clicking the mouse or pressing ctlr+alt+delete. In those instances I have to hold down the power button for a few seconds to reboot the computer. On one of those occasions, I had a PowerPoint file open with autosave turned off. The file contained images, one video, text, and several animations. It was after my computer had restarted (because of not being able to be woken up) that the file was not able to be opened with a message prompt of something to the affect of being damaged. I clicked on 'repair' which did not solve the problem. It's hard to say what the key contributing factors were to the file becoming damaged.
PowerPoints files repaired. The program could not fix files with a size less than 17kb.
PowerPoint prompting to repair the file, but cannot fix :)
Before that, I believed that Microsoft can do everything, until I met Recovery Toolbox.
Our world needs new heroes. Thanks for the corrected file.
If my budget allowed me to donate to you, I would! I was able to repair an ancient and unique presentation on dentures
The program handled a couple of files, but couldn't fix all of them. Out of 10 files I fixed only 3. Considering that the files were recoverd .PPTX files from the computer's hard drive, which was completely wiped clean, I am satisfied.
This is the first time I come across the need to restore a PowerPoint presentation. I myself am not a pro in computers, but with the Recovery Toolbox for PowerPoint wizard, I managed to fix the errors immediately.
I downloaded a demo version of the product before purchasing. I selected a damaged .PPT file in the program, the program immediately detect errors in it. The fix took less than a minute, and then the program opens the presentation right after the "Submit" button. Thank you, everything worked out for me.
I was satisfied with the service (10.75 €) but the formatting of the PPT file could not be respected. It still saves me a lot of time to rework the document. Thank you
A very simple program for recovering works in Microsoft PowerPoint. Satisfied. thank
I had a PowerPoint exam for children with drawings, but it cannot be opened and showed errors. After fixing the errors, I received a restored version of the presentation, where only the text was repaired! Pictures were fixed in a separate folder, from which you need to drag them to the desired slide! Also in the presentation I had navigation icons (back, forward, to the main page), since these pictures were recovered separately, I had to manually put links for these buttons on each slide!
While working with the presentation, the error "Microsoft PowerPoint has encountered a problem and needs to close" surfaced and the program closed. After reinstalling MS PowerPoint, he stopped opening my presentation because it was damaged.
Second error "PowerPoint found unreadable content in EssayHomeland.pptx." After restoring the document, I received two files - the restored presentation and media files in a separate ZIP archive. Now you need to insert the pictures into the slides manually.
When trying to cut and paste to a removable disk, an error occurred, and the file moved to the device with corruption. Now it is not possible to open it in the program, PowerPoint 2003 cannot read the .PPT file. The program was able to restore the file, but some slides lost animation.
After analyze broken .PPTX file, I press "Transmit", process of export the recovered data to the Microsoft PowerPoint begin, but some media files were saved to a separate folder. It is good that the duration of the animation duration in the presentation was correctly restored.
Thanks for fast fix my Microsoft PowerPoint file.
