Owner Katerina Iliades, whose family has served the Boston Greek community for decades, says many of the foods enjoyed during Lent reflect long-standing Greek culinary traditions.

“Lent is a forty-day season leading up to Easter when many families embrace traditional fasting foods rooted in the Mediterranean diet,” says Iliades. “The dishes enjoyed during this time — from beans and vegetables to seafood and olive oil — have been part of Greek culinary traditions for centuries.”

During the Lenten season, many Christians avoid meat and dairy, turning instead to a vibrant variety of Mediterranean dishes that are naturally plant-based and deeply rooted in Greek culinary tradition.

At Greek International Food Market, customers can enjoy a wide selection of traditional homemade Lenten meals including:

Okra in tomato sauce

Greek string beans (fasolakia)

Stuffed grape leaves (dolmades)

Giant beans baked in tomato sauce (gigantes)

Bean salads and Mediterranean vegetable dishes
