Forthcoming Sir Ian Livingstone Forbidden Planet signings

Sir Ian Livingstone will be signing copies of his new book Dice Men: The Origin Story Of Games Workshop at Forbidden Planet London on Friday 11th November 2022 from 17:00 - 18:30, and at Forbidden Planet Newcastle on Wednesday 16th November from 17:00 - 18:30.

It never seems like the right time to start a business.

The idea to start our own company first cropped up during one of our many ‘beer and a board game’ sessions after work at our flat.

And when Steve began writing reviews of board games for Games & Puzzles magazine, we all got even more interested in the idea. So, one day, we did. It was January 1975.

Since then, Games Workshop has grown into a cornerstone of the UK gaming industry. From the launch of Dungeons and Dragons from the back of a van, to creating the Fighting Fantasy series, co-founders Ian Livingstone and Steve Jackson tell their remarkable story for the first time.

An initial order of only six copies was enough for Games Workshop to secure exclusive rights to sell Dungeons and Dragons in the whole of Europe. Hobbyists themselves, Steve and Ian’s passion for the game soon spread and in 1977 they opened the first Games Workshop store. They went on to become bestselling authors and created an entirely new genre of interactive stories.

Dice Men is more than just the story of an iconic shop which has changed gaming for ever, it’s an insight into the birth of an industry.

Games Workshop has grown from its humble beginnings to become a global company listed on the London Stock Exchange, a FTSE 250 company with a market capitalisation of more than £3.5 billion.

Dice Men is the story of the rollercoaster early years.

Sir Ian was recently interviewed about his new book Dice Men for the BBC's World Business Report, which you can watch here from 21 minutes 30 seconds in.

Ian Livingstone in BBC Click's interactive 1,000th episode

To mark its 1,000th episode, Click - the BBC's user-friendly guide to the latest technology news, issues, gadgets and apps - has gone interactive. And not only that, but it features an interview with Fighting Fantasy's very own Ian Livingstone, and even a sneak peek of his new gamebook, Assassins of Allansia. Just remember to #keepthehat.

Click here to watch the interactive episode of Click.

Fighting Fantasy hasn't only been in the news online, it has also made an appearance recently in two magazines. The latest issue of Starburst magazine includes a plug for Fighting Fantasy Fest 3, while The Ultimate Guide to Fantasy Gaming features a retrospective of your favourite adventure gamebook series.

However, for a more in-depth look at the origins and influence of Fighting Fantasy gamebooks, you really can't beat Jonathan Green's YOU ARE THE HERO histories.

Fighting Fantasy Fest... two years on...

Two years ago today, the first Fighting Fantasy Fest was held at the Double Tree Hilton in Ealing.

As well as featuring Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone as guests of honour, a veritable artists' gallery of illustrators were in attendance, and even other series authors made a brief appearance, as well as the original commissioning editor Geraldine Cooke, and the series' first desk editor Philippa Dickinson. YOU ARE THE HERO - A History of Fighting Fantasy Gamebooks was launched at the event and there was even an auction of rare Fighting Fantasy memorabilia.

Will there be another Fighting Fantasy Fest? Well, 2017 would seem like a good time to hold one, since August will see the 35th anniversary of the publication of The Warlock of Firetop Mountain.

Fighting Fantasy Gamebooks also received a mention on the BBC technology programme Click at the weekend during a piece on games in education, which included an interview with co-creator of the FF phenomenon, Ian Livingstone. You can watch it for yourself (as long as you have a TV licence) here.

Ian will also be appearing at Play Expo Manchester on Saturday 8th October, giving a talk about his time in the games industry entitled Life is a Game. If you're in the area, or able to travel up for the weekend, why not drop by and join in the fun?
