Welcome!
Hello! Welcome to Medieval Germanica! I am happy that you have decided to stop by. Even if you don’t subscribe (I hope you do, though), I appreciate you being here.
Who Am I?
My name is Brandon Foster, and I live in the humid state of Mississippi with my wonderful wife (Christina) and two rascal dogs. I grew up in Los Angeles County until I was twenty-two, though. The short of how I went from being a LA suburbian to a Southern boy is that my dad grew up in Tennessee, joined the Air Force, met my mom when he got out, and then moved back in 2016 to be closer to his family.
Since moving to MS at twenty-two, I have graduated from community college (with an associate’s degree in Accounting) and received my bachelor’s in history from Liberty University. Now, I am done (as of Fall 2025) with my master’s in history from Eastern Washington University. Besides higher education, I married Christina in 2018, and we bought a house in 2023. Now, I teach history and write here on Substack.
My area of interest is ancient and medieval Germanic history, and I love to apply my knowledge to modern times and issues. So if you are interested in my writing, here is what you get when subscribing.
Why You (Yes, You) Should Subscribe to Medieval Germanica
My Substack is free. I do not put any paywalls on my stuff here. Now I have (and hope to continue) writing for other websites and journals that require payments, and those I can’t control. But here, my writings will always be free. I believe that information should be accessible to anyone, and I want to give people that chance.
Though my Substack is free, donations are always appreciated. You can click the link below to go to my “Buy Me a Coffee” page and do a one-time or recurring donation. It is optional and helps me spend more time doing what I love.
Photo by Jilbert Ebrahimi on Unsplash I try to write a long-form article at least once a month. It takes time to research and create interesting articles, and at the moment, I can only do that about once a month. I want to try making weekly video updates, and we will see if that is successful. Therefore, you can count on receiving one long article at least once a month and shorter writings a little more often
.
Now, what I write about. As I mentioned, I write about Germanic history, focusing on the ancient and medieval periods. But what does that mean? Basically, I focus on the tribes that migrated from what is now Scandinavia and are located in modern-day Germany, France, Austria, Spain, and all the other nations around. I focus on their migrations, conquests, cultures, kings, societies, economies, and anything else I can research. I also write a lot about Charlemagne and his dynasty.
