LCAPS trip to Northern Ireland
In October 2021, Peter Williams, Debby Mackay and Dr Amanda Farrell of LCAPS visited Northern Ireland to make preparations for students on Debby’s Comparative Policing programme. The aims of the trip were to develop a trip for students on the Comparative Policing programme in February 2022, and to grow the LCAPS network – making new contacts and strengthening our existing. Whilst in Northern Ireland, the team visited a variety of locations including the Royal Ulster Constabulary and the George Cross Foundation. The trip has led to some exciting developments for the Comparative Policing module – which students on this class will experience for themselves in February 2022!
Dr Amanda Farrell reflected on the development of the February trip and CP programme:
‘I think this will be a fantastic trip for students. It is, as Peter notes, a “city with an edge,” but it is vibrant and resilient at the same time. The students have the opportunity to compare how the sociopolitical landscape signficantly impacts core concepts of policing in England and Wales, such as policing by consent, public order policing, terrorism and intelligence, and the mental health and resilience of those serving as police officers. We had some fantastic conversations with members of the George Cross Foundation, RUC/PSNI, and Ulster University, to name a few. We have started the process of firming up research connections, so this trip was also about growing the LCAPS network and not only about a single student trip. However, I can’t wait for the students to go and experience all Belfast has to offer in Debby’s comparative policing class in the spring. Stay tuned, since you never know where LCAPS is going next’ #LCAPSgoingplaces
