The plot formed in my mind as I pictured the metaphor: An elephant in the room.

About the Author

Lelanie Roode acquired a degree in BLC.LLB. and an Honours in Criminology at the University of Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa. She was an ad hoc Law Lecturer in Family Law there. The choice to raise her four children created the opportunity to realise her dream of writing. She published Afrikaans children’s books and a novel, Poorte, with Biblaridion publishers, which are unfortunately out of print already. She coached swimming for high school students in Pretoria and later in Stellenbosch, her hometown. Lelanie almost lost her life when her twin daughters were prematurely born at 31 weeks through a caesarean section with extreme blood loss. After an emergency hysterectomy and blood transfusion, she survived. The doctors remained oblivious that she had a genetic heart condition. Two years later, she went into heart failure. She was diagnosed with an atrial septal defect—a 2 by 3 cm hole between her heart chambers—which led to yet another emergency surgery while in heart failure.

After surviving two near-death experiences, Lelanie knows her work on earth is not finished. Being a devoted Christian, she knows God called her to inspire others through lecturing, coaching, and writing. Being a mother of four children and a wife has become her life. Tragedy did not leave entirely, however, when her beloved father Carel Roode passed away in September 2018, leaving another hole in her heart and world.

In 2022, she was also blindsided by her husband of 29 years’ betrayal. In the year of a devastating and traumatic divorce, she was working on Elephant on a Trapeze when Naledi found her. She decided that giving up was not an option! Her children, family, friends, strangers that became friends, and Naledi publishers surrounded her, cheering her on to keep writing. God, working miracles in her life, opened windows where doors had closed. Lelanie’s logo of her swimming club was: “Go out there and fly!” Her children made her a ring of a phoenix rising from the ashes. She has not looked back since! RISE like a phoenix and FLY like a fighter plane; that is how she lives her life now more than ever.
