SMER Ilyushin IL-2 Stormovic of 62nd ShAP in 1/72 Scale

The SMER kit provides the option of building a single-seat IL-2 with ski landing gear which I liked just because of the novelty, if nothing else.  Markings are provided for this example in temporary Winter camo, tentatively identified as belonging to the 62nd ShAP on the Leningrad Front during the Winter of 1941/42.

Hobby Boss Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3 of 120th Fighter Regiment in 1/72 Scale

The 120th Fighter Regiment was active in the defense of Moscow during the Spring of 1942.  “Red 02” is a well known and often modeled MiG-3 from this Regiment but is somewhat controversial.  The outer wing panels are interpreted by some as having red uppersurfaces and by others as replacement panels painted green.  Likewise, the photograph shows a different light shade on the cowling which is claimed to be either light gray or natural metal.

My “Red 4” was built using decals from the spares box, with green wing panels and an aluminum cowling, inspired by photos of MiG-3s in a similar scheme.

Italeri Macchi MC.202 Folgore of Maresciallo Mario Veronesi in 1/72 Scale

Mario Veronesi was credited with his first victories while flying the Fiat CR.42, a pair of Bristol Blenheims over Gazala on 03JAN41.  After the 84a Squadriglia converted to the more modern MC.202 he continued to score, bringing his total to 9.  After the Italian surrender in SEP43 Veronesi joined the Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana where he was credited with two more victories, a B-24 and a P-47.  As an interesting aside, Veronesi was one of a small group of Italian pilots selected for training on the Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet, but the training was suspended after a number of glider flights.  Mario Veronesi survived the war with 11 victories.
