Rolling a Boulder Uphill: Working Toward Inclusivity and Belonging at Hendrix

Written by Guest Writer Andrea Ortega Do you ask a person of color for their opinion about something that is only related to them because of their skin color? Do you give them a nickname because their given name is too difficult for you to pronounce? Do all of your friends look like you? Do you think you’re excused from behaving poorly because you have friends of different ethnicities? Have you ever been held accountable for any of these microaggressions? Have you ever recognized any of these instances happening to a peer in a classroom and asked if they were … Continue reading Rolling a Boulder Uphill: Working Toward Inclusivity and Belonging at Hendrix

Who is Your Dream Mx Hendrix Guest?

Mx. Hendrix is a timeless tradition that showcases, honors, and uplifts the significance, beauty, and impact of the art of drag. By directly incorporating student participation, Mx Hendrix night serves as a wonderful opportunity for the Hendrix College student body to connect. In this way, the tradition creates a strong community, centered around a celebration of diversity, art, and gender individuality.   As transgender voices are continually suppressed by social and political limitations across the nation and the globe, these kinds of celebrations become even more treasure-worthy. While there is inherent value in the feel-good, high-energy, artistic expression of gender non-normative spectacle, … Continue reading Who is Your Dream Mx Hendrix Guest?

Hendrix Olé on ICE: Cultural Communities as Resistance

As Immigration and Customs Enforcement forces are given more power by the Trump  administration, the nation bears witness to an overwhelming rise in stigma and discrimination against the Hispanic and Latino communities. Illegal abductions and wrongful deportations continue to go unchecked and unpunished, leaving families ruined, communities torn apart, and lives completely disrupted. Amongst these seemingly hopeless times, it is important to form strong relationships and communities with one another to create resistance against the torrential feelings of despair and anger shared across the nation. Here at Hendrix College, we’ve seen protests and heard the voices of members of this community who cry out against the wrongdoings of the current administration. It is important that the Hendrix student body can find resources and spaces to connect with one another and share cultural values. One space that is specifically oriented towards these community-building goals is the Organization for Latino Expression, an organization that embraces people from every culture and encourages a mutual celebration of cultural heritage through sharing practices, history, and education of Latino cultures. With eight committee members, one specific member, MaylinRodriguez, serves as a co-president for the club. Maylin is a senior psychology major with a social justice minor here at Hendrix. Regarding the significance of OLE, Maylin provides deep insight into its role on campus and how its impact can be shared throughout the College’s community. “We represent one of the smallest demographics on campus, and that means something. Representation is power, and we hope to show that even the smallest communities can empower others to feel like they belong.” OLE helps promote belonging and diversity during a time when these concepts are attacked at the highest level of government. OLE hosts several events a year, with some of their most notable events being Salsa Night, Dia de los Niños, OLE Movie Night, and Latin Club night. In describingeach of these events, Maylin highlights OLE’s initiative in including more than simply free food orfree dance lessons. “Our goal is to provide not only food, music, and a good time; we also … Continue reading Hendrix Olé on ICE: Cultural Communities as Resistance

SuperBowl

1,895 Miles away from Hendrix in Santa Clara, California, the Super Bowl took place on February 8th. While this is a far distance from Hendrix, some students brought the excitement to campus.  For some students, the Super Bowl is a decade or longer culmination of watching their favorite team.   Seahawks fan and Hendrix freshman Kaiden Ingram became a fan of the Seahawks in 2014 when Russell Wilson was still Quarterback for the team. “The defense was really good. I was younger and if you pick a team, you let it be a good one,” said Ingram. Ingram was at home when he realized the Seahawks were going to the Super Bowl and jumped up and … Continue reading SuperBowl
