This is an Ember wrapper for the Shepherd, site tour, library. It provides additional functionality, on top of Shepherd, as well.

To start, if you are using Ember CLI, simply run:
ember install ember-shepherdInteraction with ember-shepherd is done entirely through the Tour service, which you can access from any object using the Ember.inject syntax:
import Component from '@ember/component';
import { inject as service } from '@ember/service';
export default Component.extend({
tour: service()
// OR
tourService: service('tour')
})The following configuration options can be set on the Tour service to control the way that Shepherd is used. The only required option is steps, which you can read more about below.
confirmCancel is a boolean flag, when set to true it will pop up a native browser
confirm window on cancel, to ensure you want to cancel.
confirmCancelMessage is a string to display in the confirm dialog when confirmCancel
is set to true.
defaultStepOptions is used to set the options that will be applied to each step by default.
You can pass in any of the options that you can with Shepherd.
defaultStepOptions BEFORE setting steps.
It will be an object of a form something like:
this.get('tour').set('defaultStepOptions', {
classes: 'custom-class-name-1 custom-class-name-2',
scrollTo: false,
showCancelLink: true
});default value:
{}
requiredElements is an array of objects that indicate DOM elements that are REQUIRED by your tour and must
exist and be visible for the tour to start. If any elements are not present, it will keep the tour from starting.
You can also specify a message, which will tell the user what they need to do to make the tour work.
requiredElements BEFORE setting steps.
Example
this.get('tour').set('requiredElements', [
{
selector: '.search-result-element',
message: 'No search results found. Please execute another search, and try to start the tour again.',
title: 'No results'
},
{
selector: '.username-element',
message: 'User not logged in, please log in to start this tour.',
title: 'Please login'
},
]);default value:
[]
disableScroll is a boolean, that when set to true, will keep the user from scrolling with the scrollbar,
mousewheel, arrow keys, etc. You may want to use this to ensure you are driving the scroll position with the tour.
Thanks to jquery-disablescroll for this functionality.
default value:
false
modal is a boolean, that should be set to true, if you would like the rest of the screen, other than the current element, greyed out, and the current element highlighted. If you do not need modal functionality, you can remove this option or set it to false.
default value:
false
modalContainer configures where in the DOM the modal overlay element will be placed (only has effect if modal is set to true)
default value:
body
You must pass an array of steps to addSteps, something like this:
this.get('tour').addSteps([
{
id: 'intro',
options: {
attachTo: '.first-element bottom',
beforeShowPromise: function() {
return new Promise(function(resolve) {
Ember.run.scheduleOnce('afterRender', this, function() {
window.scrollTo(0, 0);
this.get('documents.firstObject').set('isSelected', true);
resolve();
});
});
},
buttons: [
{
classes: 'shepherd-button-secondary',
text: 'Exit',
type: 'cancel'
},
{
classes: 'shepherd-button-primary',
text: 'Back',
type: 'back'
},
{
classes: 'shepherd-button-primary',
text: 'Next',
type: 'next'
}
],
classes: 'custom-class-name-1 custom-class-name-2',
highlightClass: 'highlight',
scrollTo: false,
showCancelLink: true,
title: 'Welcome to Ember-Shepherd!',
text: ['Ember-Shepherd is a JavaScript library for guiding users through your Ember app.'],
when: {
show: () => {
console.log('show step');
},
hide: () => {
console.log('hide step');
}
}
}
},
...
]);A lot of the options are the same as Shepherd options, but I will go through each of them for reference.
The name to give this step of the tour
An object with all of the options for the step
The selector and position for the tour popup to attach to, of the format 'selector position'. Position options are: top, bottom, left, and right. Can also be an object formatted like
{
element: '.myElement',
on: 'top'
}Where .myElement is any valid jQuery selector.
default value:
''
A function that returns a promise. When the promise resolves, the rest of the show code for the step will execute. This is a good place to schedule things in the Ember.run loop that you need to ensure happen before show.
default value:
null
There are some standard button types supported by ember-shepherd. Just set type to 'next', 'back', or 'cancel', then set the text and classes as normal. These will automatically be bound to the Shepherd functions. If no type is passed, a normal Shepherd button will be created.
Extra classes to apply to the step, for styling purposes and such.
default value:
''
Whether or not the target element being attached to should be "clickable". If set to false, Ember Shepherd sets the element's pointerEvents style to none while the step is active.
default value:
true
This is an extra class to apply to the attachTo element when it is highlighted (that is, when its step is active). It can be any string. Just style that class name in your CSS.
default value: ``
This sets whether or not the screen should be scrolled to get to the element when the step becomes active.
default value:
false
For custom scrolling actions, pass a function to this option. For example:
let scrollHandler = (el) => {
let winHeight = Ember.$(window).height();
// Target vertical middle scroll position
let targetPos = (Ember.$(el).offset().top + Ember.$(el).position().top) - (winHeight / 2);
// Animate scrolling with Velocity.js, for example.
Ember.$('#main-scroll-container').velocity({ top: targetPos }, 1000, "swing");
};
let steps = [
{id: 'intro',
options: {
attachTo: '#first-item left',
title: 'Welcome!',
text: ["Have we met before?"],
scrollTo: true,
scrollToHandler: scrollHandler
}
}
];default value:
null
When true, an x will appear in the top right of the popup, for canceling the tour.
default value:
false
The step's title. It becomes an h3 at the top of the step.
default value:
''
Extra options to pass to Tippy.
default value:
null
The text content to display in the tour popup. Can be:
- a string
- an array of strings
- an HTML element
- a function returning any of the above
Currently does not accept htmlbars input (PR welcome).
default value:
null
An object containing functions to be executed when events occur on the step. Supported events are before-show, show, before-hide, hide, complete, cancel, and destroy.
when: {
show: function() {
window.scrollTo(0, 0);
}
}default value:
null
Shepherd has several built in themes. By default, we include the 'arrows' theme. You can specify which theme to include in ember-cli-build.js like so:
var app = new EmberApp(defaults, {
shepherd: {
theme: 'dark'
}
});ember-shepherd uses the Ember.Evented mixin to manage events. The API is demonstrated below.
// Start the tour
this.get('tour').start();
//Show a specific step
this.get('tour').show(id);
// Stop the tour
this.get('tour').cancel();
// Go to the next step
this.get('tour').next();
// Go to the previous step
this.get('tour').back();A: Don't worry, it's not too bad! You can just set up an action to start (or cancel, or advance, etc.) the tour like so:
// app/routes/application.js
import Route from "@ember/routing/route";
import { inject as service } from '@ember/service';
export default Route.extend({
tour: service(),
actions: {
startTour: function() {
this.get('tour').start();
}
}
});A : You can use beforeShowPromise to ensure you have fully transitioned to the new route before showing
the step by doing something like this:
beforeShowPromise: function() {
return new Promise(function(resolve) {
router.transitionTo('myurl').finally(() => {
Ember.run.scheduleOnce('afterRender', this, function() {
resolve();
});
});
});
}
