multibuild failing when building linux wheels

hi,

first of all, thanks a lot for giving support for Python 3.14 so fast!

I am testing it and it is working like a charm for Mac. All linux builds (also those that were working before) are failing however, apparently when building a dependency (xz), for example here. The repo is here

Is it something that would be easy to fix?

I received the hint that I should be migrating my pipeline to another tool, but I was hoping to get it to work at least one last time to get some more time to do the migration ...

Maybe the overriding build_xz would work

like maiking it to point to an older version that is known to work? or completely leaving it out?

I wonder why we don't hit that problem in tests. I see we run ensure_xz, maybe it already exists in the image?

For your repo, you could distribute manylinux_2_28 wheels by updating MB_ML_VER. This may annoy some users of amazon-linux2 which has been put on extended life support until June 2026, even though it is woefully out of date, since it requires manylinux_2_26 or less. manylinux2014 is equivalent to manylinux_2_17, as listed here

Now that the changing XZ version PR is merged, what is your recommendation for me to do? just try again with _2_28 and the new XZ version, or roll back to 2014?

_2_28 works on linux on python versions 3.10 to 3.13, but 3.14 fails while running tests:
