Background | Projects | Skills | Experience | Education | | Interests

I have just finished a fully immersive, full-time developer Bootcamp at Makers in London, with the intention of starting a new career as a developer. I have really enjoyed the learning process and the challenges I've faced throughout the course, and I am looking for an opportunity to implement my creative and analytical skills as well as learn and build confidence in programming and code.

Background

After graduating from Exeter University in 2015, I spent 3 years in Sales and Marketing roles, specifically focussed on Luxury Travel, in which I was fortunate to spend time both in London and Kenya. I craved a more flexible lifestyle, and one in which I could do more to help others and make a more positive and meaningful contribution. For the last year, I have pursued a growing interest in technology, and the opportunities that it offers. I believe that it provides the tools to do social and environmental good as well as enhancing the lives of individuals. I have a wide range of skills and interests that not only inform my open-minded attitude, but make me uniquely capable of producing great results in the tech space because I can conceptualise the journey from raw code to final user, and the implications of the technical and design choices along the way.

Ideally I would be looking for a role in which I could build upon my passions, namely design, travel and entertainment - improving on the skills I've learnt at Makers - whilst working on a variety of relevant projects.

Projects

Title Description Development Timeframe Technologies Used Test Suites/CIs/CDs Employed
Acebook - Off the Rails Working in a team of 5 - we created a website to replicate Facebook. We were given a Trello Board of Tickets outlining the features we needed to implement and aimed to improve not just our coding ability but our understanding of how to work successfully and efficiently as a team. 2 weeks Ruby on Rails, HTML/CSS (Bootstrap), PostgreSQL, Heroku RSpec, Capybara, Travis
Git-Jamming Working in a team of 4 - we created a website that acts as a recording studio for musicians using MIDI data. We implemented four instruments, with recordings stored by the user, and the jamming session 2 weeks Javascript, HTML/CSS (Bootstrap), Firebase, Heroku Jasmine, Cypress
MakersBNB Four team members worked together in the first of the group projects to come up with a fresh take on AirBnb. 1 week Ruby, Javascript, JQuery, HTML/CSS (Bootstrap) Jasmine
Bowling Challenge Working individually to create a bowling scorecard for a full game of ten-pin bowling 2 weekends HTML/CSS (Bootstrap), JavaScript Jasmine
Thermostat Working individually to create my first project in Javascript (as well as learning the language) - making a Thermostat! 1 week HTML/CSS (Bootstrap), JavaScript Jasmine

Skills

Writing Test-Driven, Clean Code

Makers has taught me to appreciate and strive for the best quality, test driven, clean code. I have taken on board, and implemented the programming principles such as SOLID and DRY, as well as practicing usage of XP Values to make sure that every code base I work on, is easily understood by myself, other members of the group, as well as anyone else that might be interested! TDD has helped me enormously not just to prevent brittle code, but also to better understand what I am trying to achieve.

Throughout the course I had my code reviewed by peers and coaches, I understood the importance and now looking back at some of my first projects I can see they are fully tested, well written and easy to understand and change, just as my last projects.

Adaptability

I consider myself a highly adaptive individual able to adjust based on the situation. I was constantly tested whilst in Kenya, since the environment was so different to any working environment I'd experience before and have tried to translate this skill to coding.

During the final projects at Makers we were asked to specify what sort of project we would like to spend 2 weeks working on - although I can read music, and thoroughly enjoy it I had not listed creating a musical product as one of my choices and yet I was assigned a project to work with music. I had never used MIDI data before, or even heard of it for that matter - but I adapted to the needs of the group and spend time and dedication learning as best I could the technologies to help us translate MIDI data through the browser to create a musical keyboard through the computer. It was a huge learning experience for me and not one I had prepared for since I didn't expect to be working with music but it was very rewarding and we were successful in our project!

Teamwork / Mediation / Collaboration

Having spent most of my working life before Makers in a team environment, I know and have experienced that all teams have highs and lows. I feel it is paramount to learn as a team and create an inclusive and enthusiastic environment, to achieve the best possible results.

I learnt this in particular in my first group project (recreating our rendition of AirBnb), where there were various clashes, and we realised early on that the most imporant thing to do would be to align our individual goals in order to better work together as a team. Running daily standups and retros, I ensured that our group kept our eyes on the objectives of the day which played a major part in our eventual good group cohesion.

Attention to detail

This was crucial at my role in Sales, and I have since honed in on this skill to try to achieve high quality and error free code wherever possible.

In our Engineering Project we came across a major bug that was delibitating for our team and our progress - we spend an afternoon all helping one another to find the source of the problem and eventually it became evident, having combed through with debugging tools we were able to find a spelling error in one the files. This experience was incredibly useful in our final projects - we were quite pushed for time towards the end of the project and so we gave extra priority to code reviews - reading carefully to spot for errors in each others code before pushing to the master branch in GitHub in order to prevent small errors falling through the net.
