My name's Charlie and I'm a junior full stack web developer and freelance illustrator with a love for observational humour. I recently completed a four month coding bootcamp at Makers Academy where I taught myself Javascript and Ruby by building a range of applications and websites. What excites me most about web development is applying my creative thinking to problem solving. Attacking any problem from different angles and thinking of new ways around a problem as well as providing clean and fresh designed user interfaces.

Ruby, Rails, React Native, Sinatra, Node.js, Express, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, PostgreSQL

Skills

Communication

In my illustration work, and due to the nature of what my illustrations usually consist of, I have had to develop the ability to very clearly communicate ideas and projects with clients. One example of this is with a brand identity with FreeWord I had to be able to explain and convince not only the communications manager but also the CEO's that an illustration of a woman giving a horse a piggy back was exactly what they needed.

Attention to detail

Working as a freelance illustrator on large crowd scenes I had to ensure the highest attention to detail for every aspect of the image. Within the madness of the scenes I still had to ensure every character looked how the client and I wanted, make sure every colour matched the clients house style, ensure formatting of the design was spot on and making sure files were fit for purpose whether it was going to be displayed on a phone or a 4 metre tall window display.

Problem Solving

I love the challenge of solving problems whether it's in coding or day to day life. I love adding to my repetoire as I learn new skills and tech to solve problems that aren't initially obvious - whether it's to develop an app or building a chair out of some reclaimed wood. This passion for problem solving reflects my resiliance in challenges. I love seeking out new opportunities to learn and so I am always willing to direct my own learning when I need to adapt or take on something I've never done before.

Fast Learner

In both work as an illustrator as well as on the Makers bootcamp I've always had to be a fast learner in areas that were new to me. Makers in particular was a highlight of this, where for the final project in order to make our street food finding app we had to learn Expo with React Native, Express with MongoDB whilst building our app all in two weeks. In addition, I've worked in many other roles such as a labourer for a building firm and a decorator where I had to learn completely new skills very quickly to get up to speed with the rest of the team in order to not slow down the work without comprimising on quality.

Experience

ThreeJS Journey (present)

I am currently working my way through Bruno Simon's ThreeJS course to stretch the capabilities of the web even further and be able to create 3D experiences within the browser.

Freelance Illustrator (2018-present)

I've worked as a freelance illustrator for the past two years working on a massive range of projects, from tiny podcast logos up to 4 metre tall window displays. Working in this field has improved my ability to come up with new and creative solutions to problems and briefs to fulfill the clients needs.

Barista (2018-2020)

Working as a barista and front of house member of staff at Fred & Ginger Coffee, I was always multi tasking and ensuring the highest attention to detail to ensure every customer was satisfied at all times of the day. Often the lunch rush would have queues stretching down the high street so being able to work in a team was very important, on top of delivering the excellent standards of customer service.

Education

Makers Academy (January 2021 to March 2021)

A 16 week intensive development bootcamp, focusing on:

  • OOP, TDD, MVC, DDD
  • Agile/XP
  • Ruby, Rails, JavaScript
  • RSpec, Jasmine, Jest

Throughout the course I worked in teams and pairs on top of self-led learning, always with a focus on using the best practices in whatever tech stack was being used. In addition I attended all of the EI workshops that focused on strengthening valuable teamwork skills including communication, feedback and empathy. Whilst on the course, and still on going, I provided mentorship to three students in the cohort below; assisting in dealing with learning new tech, debugging their code and any other issues they had.

University of The West of England (2015 to 2018)

  • Illustration BA(Hons), 2.1

Buckinghamshire New University

  • Foundation Studies in Art, Design and Media, Distinction

Hobbies

  • Sports - 5 a side football depsite my enthusiasm outweighing my playing ability
  • Drawing - When not working on commissions I always draw; turning the mundane into the fantastical
  • Fermenting - I spent most of 2020 attempting and not perfecting sourdough bread alongside fermenting anything I could.
