Alex Saunders

I'm a language-agnostic software engineer trained at Makers Academy. My recent roles have focused on developing full-stack RESTful and event-driven user-focused apps, sharing knowledge around testing best practices, and leading on re-architecting projects. I’m looking for a role where I can further develop my mentoring and coaching skills and build user-focused software.

Senior Software Developer (October 2020 - current)
Software Developer (February 2019 - October 2020)

Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) administers and supervises Lasting Power of Attorneys and Deputyship orders for adults who lack mental capacity.

  • Line managed a junior developer carrying out weekly meetings with a focus on learning and development, well-being, and career progression
  • Led regular testing Community of Practice sessions to drive testing excellence throughout the department
  • Coached an apprentice developer pre and post Makers Academy placement
  • Influenced a leadership team to start a migration from PHP to Golang, including re-write of an existing API service to upskill developers.
  • Led a PHP to Golang rewrite project instilling best practices and translated user requirements to epics and tickets
  • Prototyped and implemented an event-driven workflow in AWS to replace a CSV upload in order to reduce app complexity and provide real-time updates
  • Implemented a metrics and data-driven approach to user stories
  • Planned and led an epic to replace manual document uploading with integrations between existing systems
  • Prioritised and completed technical debt based on risk and value
  • Reimplemented serial PHP integration test suites to run in parallel reducing run times from 40 minutes to 6 minutes leading to more frequent releases
  • Created Golang infra scripts to run AWS ECS tasks in CI pipelines and paired with DevOps engineers to codify our infrastructure in terraform

PM Connect
Platform Developer (April 2018 - Current)

PM Connect provide and create mobile experiences for global brands by facilitating frictionless payments via mobile phone networks.

  • Implemented a PHP based Server Side Event system to ensure asynchronous billing charges were handled correctly
  • Worked on transitioning legacy monolith systems to multiple distributed services to split API code (PHP/Symfony) and Integration code (Go)
  • Championed a TDD and BDD approach to development which led to a decrease in the level of critical errors encountered in running services

Bluetel Solutions
Software Engineer (September 2017 - April 2018)

Bluetel are a digital agency providing cloud based CMS and customer service solutions to national and international clients.

  • Developed custom Apex Salesforce solutions for the customer service function of a national energy company
  • Prototyped and delivered Node.js Lambda scripts to parse emails ready to be used in AWS Machine Learning to make predictions on email categories

Existent Ltd
Junior Full Stack Developer (November 2016 - September 2017)

Existent run a number of online brands, the main one being a TV/Broadband comparison site Cable.co.uk

  • Built an asset library in Ruby-on-Rails that integrated into a PHP CMS
  • Helped to migrate legacy codebases from older versions of PHP and Bootstrap to more recent versions to increase security and features available
  • Implemented FactoryBot testing approaches to streamline Rails testing flows
