Distributed / Central Design?

If this project is going open source, why don't we support a distributed & central design. 

This way anyone can host their own community if they have hardware and it'll link to a central listing so the discovery aspect is centralized.

We could offer a less-customizable community hosted directly if they don't have the resources to host their own.
