To access the Backrooms, you must suffocate in a block. The easiest way to do this is:
- Dig a hole.
- Enclose yourself inside.
- Fill the space with sand or gravel to trigger suffocation.
You'll know it's working when:
- Static sounds begin playing.
- Your screen goes black.
- A cutscene plays, showing you falling from the sky into the ceiling of Level 0.
Tip: Pay attention to the ceiling lights! Their orientation helps you understand your surroundings when you spawn. After falling through the ceiling, a title sequence appears, marking the start of your playthrough.
- Jumping is disabled in the Backrooms
- This prevents excessive hunger loss and slows down progression.
- Press 'R' (default keybind) to turn on your flashlight.
- The flashlight is essential for navigation and survival.
- Exception: The flashlight becomes unusable in The Poolrooms.
Multiplayer support is available through several methods:
The Essential Mod is the recommended method for multiplayer as it requires no manual configuration. Simply install it alongside the mod and start playing with friends instantly. If you are encountering issues using Simple Voice Chat, please see below at the Aternos Configuration Note.
When using Simple Voice Chat, you can come across an issue where no matter what, but all players (except the host) will not be able to connect to the in-game voice chat. To fix this issue, downgrade your version of Simple Voice Chat. This version is the only tested version that actually works.
We also provide official support for dedicated servers and Aternos via our Discord server. Join the community for help with setup and troubleshooting.
On Aternos servers, the default UDP port used by Simple Voice Chat (24454) may not be open—even if the server console claims otherwise. To fix this:
- Navigate to the Simple Voice Chat configuration file.
- Change the port value from
24454to-1.
This tells the mod to use the server’s current active port instead.
Once this change is made, voice chat and multiplayer functionality should work as intended. However, if it ends up not working, there is not much more that can be done our end. You will have to contact Simple Voice Chat's support team and ask about it there. If you end up getting a solution that works, please contact us so we may post it for others to see.
