I attended a high school performance led by Mariachi Los Lobos & Grupo Folklorico Ozomalti. They put on a fantastic show! Winter Texans (retirees from Northern areas of the U.S. who spend a large portion of winter in Texas) were among the audience which was mostly made up of parents. The show was named “Herencia Hispana”, meaning Hispanic Heritage. It consisted of music and dances based of different Hispanic cultures.
The costumes that accompanied each dance were my favorite part of the show. They were detailed and reflected so much beauty and elegance and for a moment, I forgot I was watching teens. I was taken away with each song and dance. The students captivated my attention by immersed themselves into the character of their performance. An interesting twist to the show is that it also include country music performed by Mariachi. A few of their members dressed and impersonated a few of country musics finest. I was impressed by how delightful it sounded. The music was supported by violins, trumpets, guitarron, vihuela, and a good ole guitar. It was a charming addition to the show.
For the show’s final bang, a Hawaiian song played as the Folklorico students danced and came into the audience inviting people of all ages to join them onto the stage for dance. It was so much fun to see little kids and adults joyfully swinging their hips and arms from side to side. It quickly brought a smile to my face. The students displayed an enormous amount of talent that night, just as they have for many other performances. I certainly look forward to attending more.
