Welcome to my humble corner of the world here on substack.

Who am I?

Well, to put it plainly, a man on a meandering mission to re-enchant the world. I have long been a love of the mysteries, an erotic knight in desperate pursuit of Sophia. My intellectual travels have been relegated to the tomes of the tongues that came before us, with their gentle and adept engraving of the mysteries on the bones of trees.

More plainly, you say?

I am a big old book dork, who loves exploring the vast map of human consciousness left behind by those who came before us. My current hyper-obsession is digging through the digitally dusty pages of late antiquity and beyond. I have a few key projects that I am working on, that I will be releasing serially here on Substack and don’t forget the On the Mysteries over on YouTube if you are into the video content.

Some will be here, some will be paid, some will be elsewhere. As is the game with content delivery in the modern age. One must diversify!

But for a taste of what’s to come.

  • Hymns of the Duat - A modern katabatic ritual and liturgy of the Duat for practitioners who seek to move through the Book of the Dead and become an asar or an akh.

  • Entering Her Sacred Garden: Erotic Thuergy with Aphrodite - a Manual of Theurgic ritual with the goddess Aphrodite, her lovers, and her children.

  • Orphic Hymns Theurgical Translations and Commentary - Modern Translations by my totally incapable hands, but HEY I am trying and learning!

  • Commentary on the Chaldean Oracles: Modern commentary on the Chaldean Oracles

  • Unveiling the Orphic Rhapsodies: The cross-examination of the Orphic Rhapsodic Theogonies as it relates to other creation myths in the Mediterranean and Near East.

  • Turning Inward - Platonic Meditations on Meditation in a Dialogue format for the Western Mystic

  • The Academy of Orpheus - Ritual Circuit in the Hymn to Musaeus and Iamblichaen Platonics

  • The Ourania Epic - A new epic in the style of Homer and Nonnus, the story of Aphrodite.

  • The Ourania Glossa - An attempt to recapture the daemonic language of theurgy via epithets, the creation of epithets for precise mathematical theurgical usage.

Come unveil the mysteries of the Western esoteric tradition with me Frater O.D.

A Transparency Statement

Regarding the Use of Automated Research Tools & Artificial Intelligence

I have never been shy nor hidden the fact of my experimentation with AI tools. I have a long backlog of YouTube videos talking about it.

In the spirit of scholarly transparency and methodological integrity, I wish to clarify my approach to technological assistance in the research and editorial processes that inform this publication.

I am aware of the lightning rod that is the big, bad AI. I have my own set of reservations and excitements when it comes to the use of and the ethical misuse of this emergent technology. I also am well aware that it is not going anywhere. Thusly, I have experimented with its functionality and capability as it has emerged. It is a tool, like a hammer, it can build or it can destroy. As Aristotle would have said, Is this of skillful means? Are you simply engaging in intellectual laziness? This is a question I have asked many times, and ask myself regularly to keep my compass true.

My approach to “AI or LLM” integration embodies this principle—each interaction involves sustained deliberation, iterative refinement, and conscious choice. The technology serves as an instrument within a larger deliberative process, but the conceptual architecture, interpretive choices, and final synthesis remain products of human agency and the aim of practical, reproducible wisdom.

I have been a practitioner and student of the esoteric for going on two decades. This labyrinth of corridors that has no end, the mountains of tomes, and the insights that burst forth while reading, or in practice, are often lost in note pages tucked in books behind books. When this insight or inspiration bursts into life again within me, it is often changed, reshaped, and embodied. Thus, I have often paraphrased, much to the chagrin of many. The use of technology such as notebooks, Word Documents, audio notes on a smartphone, and now the collection of my digitized notes in an “AI” databank all serve the same function: to help me remember, to recall, to recite.

Without which, I am afraid many of us would forget our most potent insights.

Before we wrote things down, we recited the words of masters often very imperfectly. But in this new world of written dogma, the crystallization of what was said as inviable fact has dulled our ability to capture the essence of a teacher and replaced it with the squalid and rigid and often dead “fact”.

Technological Integration in Practice

So how do I use these tools that everyone pretends they aren’t using?

I implement various automation applications and artificial intelligence tools as auxiliary instruments in the following specific, circumscribed capacities:

Research Enhancement: AI serves as a research catalyst, helping to identify potential source materials, cross-reference obscure citations (which it fails at OFTEN, and I am left to catch every one), and also map conceptual connections across diverse textual traditions; particularly within the vast corpus of late antique and esoteric literature at large. Within this methodology, I will often utilize source materials to challenge my view, have a conversation with the text itself, which informs something new, a synthesis, if you will.

Editorial Refinement: These tools help refine imprecise grammatical constructions and enhance textual clarity, ensuring that complex philosophical concepts are articulated with precision. One which my barbarian tongue has long lacked. But I have used less and less of this as time has gone on, in favor of a more raw and unfiltered approach, which is less than academic. This will be more evident as time goes on in this publication.

Dialectical Challenge: AI functions as an intellectual interlocutor, challenging my interpretative frameworks and pushing against potential blind spots in my hermeneutical approach to ancient texts. If we aren’t doing this and we are simply parroting what we just read in the latest academic journal, we are little better than the AI we claim is a plagiarism device. Most of what we read online is already puppeteering ideas, the clever tongue of someone else speaking through you.

As Aristotle notes, "Moral Choice is either Intellect put in a position of Will-ing, or Appetition subjected to an Intellectual Process. And such a Cause is Man." When I engage AI as an intellectual interlocutor, I remain the originating cause of the inquiry. The tool may challenge my assumptions or suggest connections, but every choice to accept, reject, or modify these suggestions flows from human deliberation and judgment.

Boundaries of Technological Dependence

What AI Does Not Generate: The conceptual architecture, original insights, interpretative frameworks, and final intellectual products emerge exclusively from my own contemplative engagement with primary sources and lived mystical practice. AI neither crafts my ideas nor substitutes for the deep, sustained inquiry that authentic scholarship and synthesis with hard earned practice demands.

Methodological Transparency: I employ these tools to enhance efficiency in the mechanical aspects of research and writing, not to replace the fundamental work of thinking, synthesizing, and creating meaning from the wisdom traditions under examination.

Editorial Accountability & Intellectual Humility

Should errors in citation, misattribution, or interpretative missteps appear in my work, I remain open to friendly correction and will amend such inaccuracies when brought to my attention through measured, constructive engagement. I am not perfect, nor is an editing software, nor is AI, nor is any piece anyone has ever released into the world. If I had a nickel for every misquote, misrepresentation, and bending of the “truth” I have come across on Substack, books, and the internet at large, I would indeed be a poor man with Billions of dollars.

However, I will not entertain accusations of deliberate misrepresentation or respond to hostile criticism that lacks substantive engagement with the material itself. Such responses serve neither truth nor productive discourse.

Scholarly Positioning & Reader Responsibility

Intellectual Stance: I write neither as a credentialed academic authority nor as a dogmatic teacher, but as a dedicated practitioner who enjoys sharing my insights with others on the path. My words and work here emerge from sustained engagement with contemplative traditions and esoteric philosophy. It is imperfect, it is often mind-tailings or sometimes even my own therapy to process these thoughts on the page. Thusly, do not entertain me as anything other than a human grappling with ideas far beyond my true kenning.

Interpretative Framework: The content herein represents personal synthesis—the fruit of practice-informed study rather than definitive scholarly pronouncement. I AM NOT YOUR TEACHER. These explorations constitute intellectual musings, reflective interpretations, and phenomenological observations drawn from direct engagement with mystical texts and varied theurgical practice(s).

Take what you can from them, but no one will ever be able to show you the truth until you do these things first. Not through perfectly accurate footnotes or perfect quotations.

Aristotle reminds us that "The Virtues come to be in us neither by nature, nor in despite of nature, but we are furnished by nature with a capacity for receiving them and are perfected in them through custom." My engagement with AI tools follows this same principle—virtue in their use develops through repeated, mindful practice rather than rigid rules. Each project becomes an opportunity to cultivate better judgment about when and how these tools serve authentic inquiry.

Reader Engagement: Should any particular insight resonate with your own understanding or spark recognition of truth, I encourage you to pursue independent verification through your own research and contemplative inquiry. Trust your intellectual discernment and spiritual intuition—no external authority, including my own interpretations, nor footnotes, nor citations should substitute for your direct engagement with these profound traditions, EVER!

Tools in Service of Wisdom

We live in an age of unprecedented access to both ancient wisdom and technological capability. The judicious integration of these resources serves the larger project of re-enchanting our understanding of consciousness, cosmos, and divine reality. Like the astrolabe aided medieval contemplatives in their celestial observations, contemporary tools may assist—but never replace—the fundamental work of spiritual and intellectual inquiry. WHICH IS NOT DONE ON SUBSTACK, but in the personal laboratory of your heart.

The wisdom traditions themselves teach us that all phenomena, including technological ones, may serve as skillful means (upaya) when employed with proper discernment and appropriate boundaries.

Aristotle's insight that "true practical wisdom and true goodness of character are interdependent" applies directly to technological engagement. The ethical use of AI requires not just technical skill but character formation—the cultivation of intellectual virtues like honesty, humility, and discernment. These tools can serve wisdom only when wielded by those committed to the patient work of developing practical wisdom through sustained engagement with truth.
