Who’s behind this newsletter?

That’s a well stocked fruit bowl right there.

Hi, I’m Miles! I’m an easy-going, soft-chested, 30-year-old man who’s successfully used the art of cooking to attract a mate and eventually marry her. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t my cooking that has kept our 12-plus-year relationship stable, solving many minor disputes and spicing up regular date nights. In all honesty, my food has been the bedrock of almost all of my personal successes.

I’m not a professional chef (far from it!), but for as long as I can remember I’ve been passionate about finding, developing, and perfecting recipes to create restaurant-quality meals at home.

Over time, I’ve amassed a growing collection of rigorously tested, absolutely bloody-delicious recipes (and a few borderline genius cooking hacks), that have often impressed my family, friends (and most importantly) my wife.

Flavour Hack was an idea born from wanting to share these recipes, ranging from quick, budget-friendly meals to occasional indulgent ones, and to share with others how I turn everyday meals into something special. I’m hoping that by sharing what I’ve learned (and continue to learn), I can inspire and connect with a community of like-minded food lovers.

When I was younger, I dreamt of being a chef, but life took me in the direction of a career in filmmaking and marketing instead. While I might have dodged some professional kitchen disasters, I soon realised that long hours, stress, and occasional burns are part of my everyday life anyway—so I might as well have become a chef! Although that ship has long since sailed, entering my thirties has given me the chance to reflect on the last decade and think about what truly excites me. And what excites me is cooking. So, here I am, ready to bring that passion of mine back to life, and I’m hoping that Flavour Hack will be the place where I can channel this new energy into something delicious.

Why subscribe to Flavour Hack?

The Flavour Hack newsletter is free. There are no paywalls, no premium tiers, just my love for food, available to everyone and anyone. I believe that good food, great recipes, and handy cooking hacks should be shared with as many people as possible. I guess that means the main reason to subscribe is so that you don’t miss a newsletter. Simple. Just the way I like it!

That said, going forward if you ever enjoy one of my recipes, or you find a cooking hack useful, or you simply appreciate what I do, you can support me anytime with a one-time donation via Buy Me a Coffee. I’m very wary of adding more subscriptions to my life, and I’m much more likely to send someone a one-off gesture. So that’s what I’ve done here on Flavour Hack.

Another benefit of subscribing is for the Flavour Hack chat. Come and swap recipes, share tips, and geek out over all things food with me and a like-minded foodie community.

A lot of food blogs, whether on Substack or elsewhere on the internet, often feature unrealistic recipes, professionally art-directed photo shoots, and content that feels so curated and polished it’s hard to believe it’s just one person running the blog. Maybe that’s just me being a neggy-noo-nah (which, I’m pretty sure, is some ancient medieval English term for a negative person). Anyway, my point is, the pictures of my food aren’t going to be professionally lit or shot with a cinema camera. In fact, they’ll all be taken on my Google Pixel 8a, a pretty mid-level phone camera at best, usually right before my wife and I dive into the dish I’ve just photographed. I’m also usually rushing because I don’t want the food to go cold. To sum it up, my photos might leave a bit to be desired, but the food definitely won’t. These are meals I actually eat, at home, with my loved ones, and I won’t be sharing anything I don’t think is a great recipe. That part, I’ll get right.

So, whether you’re a subscriber or simply a curious visitor, welcome to Flavour Hack! I'm thrilled to have you here and hope you'll be part of building a community of people who love making everyday meals a little more special.

See you in the kitchen.
