Disability justice in nursing education and practice
Disabled Nurse National Solidarity Collective (DNNSC) is a grassroots organization that centers disability justice to advance the belongingness and liberation of multiply marginalized disabled nurses, nursing students, and nurse educators within the contexts of nursing education and practice.
We believe in the interconnectedness of material oppressions and the power of cross-movement solidarity (disability justice in partnership with justice movements working toward Black liberation, the abolition of police and carceral institutions, Palestinian liberation, reparations, indigenous sovereignty, land back, queer and trans liberation, fat liberation, long covid justice, environmental justice, and reproductive justice) through critical reflections on white supremacy, colonialism, and capitalism.
Goals of DNNSC:
Facilitate intersectional disability-focused critical consciousness raising and political education within and beyond the community of disabled nurses by centering the voices of multiply marginalized disabled people to dismantle ableism. Ableism includes both the unjust treatment of disabled people and the unjust production of disability (manufactured through white supremacy, settler colonialism, militarized imperialism (police brutality, incarceration, occupation forces), unjust labor conditions, and environmental injustice).
Reimagining nursing from the margins.
Center the leadership, voices, and lived experiences of multiply marginalized disabled nurses, nursing students, nurse educators, and patients to critique, reimagine, and rebuild nursing.
Emancipation through political education.
Facilitate disability-focused political education, critical consciousness raising, and transformation of systems to advance and move beyond accommodationist solutions / seeking inclusion in oppressive systems.
Building community.
Build community and care webs across multiply-marginalized disabled affiliates of nursing.
Scholarship-Art-Activism.
Support the production and dissemination of crip/disabled scholarship, art, and activism that seeks to create cross-identity, cross-movement, and cross-disability solidarity
Moving from legal compliance to human-centered change.
Focus on changing humans and ideas to facilitate interpersonal and institutional compliance with law and policy.
Facilitating cross-movement solidarity.
Our liberation as disabled nursing students, nurse educators, and nurses is inextricably tied to the liberation of all other marginalized communities. We stand in solidarity with justice and liberation movements domestically and abroad.
We need your support!
