No! Do Not Give up. The Marathon Continues

Published February 13, 2022 by Calpas

“Sometimes you have to take two steps back to take ten steps forward.” These are the words of Ermias Joseph Asghedom, popularly known as Nipsey Hussle. May he rest in eternal peace.

This is the first blog post I am sharing this year. However, it is not the first article I have written so far. Some of my readers have been asking why I stopped posting on my blog. To clarify, I did not stop writing. I am spending a few months away from the social media madness and the noise of humanity to focus on a big league project that I expect to share with you before the end of the year.

I recently realized that I have been on this platform for 6 years- I got the anniversary notification the first week of February. That is the main reason I have decided to write this article. For the last six years I have been on the free plan. The journey has been long and along the way I have gained premium skills for my long term plan. The first article I published on this blog was a repost of a video from Daily Motion.

My initial goal was to share my poems with the world. I posted a collection of poems and random thoughts and after almost two years, decided to try prose poetry. I developed my writing skills from prose poetry trials that I did for almost a year. My small group of readers at the time complained of the complexity in packaging my messages. I decided to write articles and essays heavily influenced by poetry writing literary devices. However, years moved on too fast and in 2019, I went down with depression. Despite the darkness at the time, that year turned out to be my white light moment.

While undergoing life defining experiences and moments, I realized that writing was my safe haven amidst the chaos. That year I barely shared anything on my blog apart from an year end article. While sulking during my depressing experiences, writing saved me from self sabotage on numerous occasions that year.

In 2020, the emergence of a global pandemic presented an opportunity to fully focus on writing. During the lockdowns I wrote extensively and experimented the influence of different cultures on my writing style. The cultures were derived from the music I consumed and the streets. The experiment worked and I tremendously improved. Before the year came to an end, I had gained a couple of new readers and won back my original readers before 2019.

2021 was a year I committed myself fully to this blog. I intended to post 52 articles but ended the year at 38. I fell short. However, I accumulated over 1000 readers and a regular traffic on my blog with some articles performing exceptionally well. I have never doubted my creative capacity. I was able to craft original, unique and marketable stories with an impeccable flow and outstanding word play. 2021 inspired me to go big this year and transition to premium mode.

The criticism, motivation and support I get from you as a reader has also been instrumental in my development. It is the only reason I have decided to take a leap of faith and transform my words to works. I have strong faith that whatever is in the pipeline will be a historical and legendary shift. God loves me and He blessed me with a talent. I look forward to writing my way out of poverty and trouble soon.

Here are some of your comments that have been instrumental in ensuring the marathon continues:

I think this is one of the most important information for me.
And i’m glad reading your article. But want to remark on some general things, The website style is
wonderful, the articles is really nice : D. Good job,
cheers
( UPINJI: SICKER THAN CANCER, DEADLIER THAN SIN.)

It’s actually a nice and helpful piece of info. I’m satisfied that
you just shared this useful info with us. Please keep us informed like this
.

Thank you for sharing. (5:00 A.M: Alarms on Snooze, The Morning Madness.)

The root of your writing while sounding agreeable initially, did not really settle properly with me after some time. Somewhere throughout the paragraphs you were able to make me a believer but only for a short while. I still have got a problem with your leaps in logic and one might do well to fill in all those breaks. If you can accomplish that, I could certainly end up being impressed. (How to Dress in Cool, Emboldening and Vibrant Rastafari Fashion)

Hey! This is my first visit to your blog! We are a group of volunteers and starting a new project in a community in the same niche. Your blog provided us useful information to work on. You have done a wonderful job! (Vybz Kartel’s 10 Years in Prison and Still the Greatest.)

True…we never know the depth of water. We have to be careful during this times.
Great reading especially during the rainy season.
(This is one of many comments from Juliet Aswani. She has been a fan since the first day I started this. I love her relentless support and constructive feedback. Feel the love Katoto.)

I decided to write this to mark my six years on this platform. I will be back soon in a big way once I am done laying the last foundation stones in a few months. Stack the racks since I won’t be free anymore. Pray for me and wish me luck. However, I feel that luck is a product of hard work.

Meanwhile, the marathon continues.

Jiandikishe sasa! Why It is Important To Register as a Voter.

Published October 21, 2021 by Calpas

Are you are registered voter? If not, grab your original national ID card or valid Kenyan passport and head to your nearest county assembly ward and register as a voter today. In case you have plans for today, IEBC iko mtaani hadi 2nd November when the mass voter registration exercise will come to an end.

Registering as voter gives you an opportunity to vote and elect leaders of your choice, allows you to vie for an elective position, gives you the right to nominate candidates for an election and gives you the moral authority to hold leaders accountable.

Getting yourself registered as a voter is a simple exercise that starts with one presenting themselves to the registration officer with his/her identification documents at a designated Registration Centre within the working hours. IEBC registration officers can be identified with their reflector jackets that are well labeled. The registration centres are used as the polling centres during elections. At the registration centres, the applicant fills the Application for Registration Form and the registered voter will be issued a registration acknowledgement slip bearing the voters’ details.

One can be denied registration as a voter if they have not attained the age of 18 years, when you are not in possession of the orignal ID card or a valid Kenyan passport, if a competent court declares you of unsound mind and if you have been found guilty by an election court or reported to be guilty of any election offence during the preceding five years. It is also an offence to register more than once as a voter.

In case you switched hoods or would like to transfer as voter, you can transfer to a registration centre that is convenient for you. A person may transfer as a voter to another registration centre of his or her choice within the registration period.

In the 2017 General elections, according to IEBC, Nairobi county had 2,250, 853 registered voters in 3,378 polling stations. Kiambu County had 1,180,920 registered voters in 963 registration centres. Prisons had 5,528 registered voters while the Diaspora had 4,393 registered voters across 10 polling stations.

Kenya′s Election Act 2011 allows the Electoral Commission “to use such technology as it considers appropriate in the electoral process”. The Commission has so far implemented four key election technologies. The Biometric Voter Registration(BVR) system is used for registering voters. It comprises a laptop, a finger print scanner and a camera. BVR captures a voter′s facial image, finger prints and civil data or Personally Identifiable Information (PII)-Name, gender, identity card/passport number, telephone number etc. The registration takes place at the registration centre where an individual is expected to vote. The BVR method of registration was the only system deployed by IEBC to register voters just before the 2013 general elections.

BVR ensures that:

  •  There are multiple methods of identifying voters uniquely (other than names and IDs, there are finger print and facial features)
  • That capture of voters′ records is fast, efficient and direct
  • Security and privacy of information is enhanced
  • Integrity and reliability of information is improved e.g. elimination of duplicates

If you have to hold your leader accountable, you have to start by electing one. Registering as a voter provides an opportunity for one to be a part of the democratic process of appointing their leaders; from the grassroots level to the national level.

Facebook: How to Spend Hours On Facebook Without Sharing What’s on Your Mind

Published October 5, 2021 by Calpas

On a single day, I received over 1500 friend requests on Facebook. It was on a Sunday and since I rarely stay on Facebook, I thought it was as a result of accumulated requests since I last logged on. I was wrong. They were coming in every minute and at the peak hour, I had over 84 new people asking to be friends. I still cannot explain who was behind the numbers but as of writing this, I cannot confirm any more friend request.

Pseudo Friends

The kind of friends you make online is interesting. Seemingly because there is a deep divide between our online appearances and our realities. Sometimes fake identities, other times fake originalities, fake business and fake problems and problem solvers. Some use faking as a spice for their journey on the way to making it. It is said, ‘Fake it till you make it.’

Scammers like taking people for rides. Fools get caught up in those games. Daktari kutoka Kitui competitors, especially from Nigeria and Ghana, are a step ahead. They use Facebook to advertise their pleasing services to fortune seekers. You don’t have to go through the pains of looking for them since they will come to you with a portfolio of what they can do to change your life.

For instance if you called Ifa Meki* with problems such as a need for instant money, business boom, financial breakthrough, getting rich without rituals(yet it is likely that he will need a lot of rituals for this), examination success, do as I say( I guess this is what we call kamote in the streets), good luck(I guess he wasn’t giving much of this to himself since anybody that he reaches out to would be a potential client instantly), impotency, commanding tone(this is a new one), promotion at work( I know many would be scammed into paying for this. Stay focused.), spiritual power for men of God (Do they need power from man when they have the spirit of God?), job success and love and marriage rings, he can help solve your problems. With his sticker of a fox riding a bicycle, I wasn’t ready for a ride and I expressed my lack of interest.

Then came the begging boy from Ghana. He had no bowl on himself but a pitiful story of his dead father and his lack of education which was evident in his texts. To alleviate his state, he needed help with $3million. This is the interesting part, he did not have a job and all he wanted was for me to send him 3million US dollars on his phone number which he had sent me. To do that, I have to be an angel. I am not. Secondly, if I had that amount of money, the least of places you would find me on a Sunday afternoon was on Facebook.  I was interested in asking what he would do with the money. Since he had no plan, he said God would bless me if I helped him. He does that unconditionally. I did not feel obligated to help in order to attract blessings. Having discovered that the dollars were a pipe dream, he asked for 50 cedi for my work to go on. I was helped him that day but not with money. A few minutes later he sent a low quality photo of a table sprinkled with dollars and naira’s and a message saying money was never the problem and I don’t have a piece.

Baba Awo* had a different approach for marketing his business services after I had accepted his friend request. “This is not blood money…. WhatsApp me to understand me better for making spiritual money like Animal Ritual.” Only a mad man believes such and only an imbecile can trust his word. His services are; making money, yahoo plus (I don’t have an idea about this), win Naira bet (the equivalent of what street doctors promise gamblers on their posters hanging on an electric pole near you), girls following me (I would like to know the side effects of engaging this), pass examinations and police cases. Baba assures that he is not in the business to take away people’s lives at the end of his message.

If you have been on the internet for a while, you will realize that people with some knowledge on forex and cryptocurrency think they are a digital class ahead of the rest. Sometimes it is true. Some other times, it is someone in your digital class who prees on your insecurity of the future. This is often the case with people who have been scammed by bitcoin and binary brokers, a case of a blind man leading another blind man.

Digital Investor

“Do you know you can earn up to 3500 dollars with 300 dollars?” The sane reply to this would be, How?  After asking the question how, they sent an investment plan with 300 dollars as the least amount that one can invest with a potential earning of $3256.45 and 3000 dollars as the highest amount in the investment plan with a potential earning of $30000. With this kind of offer, one would be spoilt for choices. Surprisingly, this was a message from Chicago and on Facebook Messenger another South African had sent a similar investment plan for Binary Options Trading. Being scanty on the details of what binary option trading was made matters worse for a potential investor.

The South African, if I became serious on discussing the business part of trading, would hand over my investment plan to his dealer who does the trade for them. The American, who I highly doubt isn’t American, was ready to help. She proposed a 200-dollar support but only if I went to a bank and took a 200-dollar loan. Well, I couldn’t do that and she negotiated a lower investment plan starting at 70 dollars but I still had to borrow 200 dollars from the bank. Why did I have to borrow to invest in something that had potential earnings but without the information on how to go about it? This was the question that both ‘brokers’ could not answer. They did not understand their trade or their trade isn’t binary options at all.

The three hours I spent on Facebook on this day were remarkable. They were the longest I ever spent on the app since I joined it. Surprisingly, for the first time, I scrolled the home page without thinking of what was on my mind. Exposed to the naivety of some users, I will be keeping off the messenger icon while on Facebook for fear of seeing the unseen and reading the unread. Sometimes, we can’t come back from some realizations and rarely do we wake up to new realities. As for Facebook, it is a global village with a page for every face.

Give Up on People, That’s a Choice But Never Give Up

Published September 28, 2021 by Calpas

Thoughts of piecing together this article have been postponed for far too much. It is as an effect of once feeling that it is time I cut the chase and let go. However, here I am doing it after calling off countless brainstorm sessions and letting my thought wander endlessly into the sea of fantasy and imagination. During one of these sessions, I remembered the words of Nas on Rare off his latest album; King’s Disease II, where he says, “A man who has no imagination has no wings.” Since it is a life of choices and living responsibly with the consequences of your choices, I resided back to my mantra driven from the wise words of Abraham Lincoln; ‘Man must not care where and when he will die, provided he dies at the post of honor and duty.’

Resentment and Expectations

I keep my expectations fairly low when dealing with people. Drawing from previous experiences, it is pretty hard to trust people more so with the affairs of the heart. Experiencing frustrations and disappointments is normal in life but some of the things we normalize today are overwhelming. That is why I rarely trust and this explains why we have many broken relationships that are sometimes never repaired. This causes resentment. People like mad dogs with complex emotions ranging from anger to disappointment, bitterness and hard feelings trod the streets with long faces drawing lines of underlying sense of being mistreated or wronged by other people.

The easiest way for me to explain my underlying insecurities is by writing. However, this year, I dedicated the entirety of it into writing to unlock the creative beast mode in my mental faculties and it was working perfectly well without my realization until I figured out I wasn’t as happy as I intended to be at the beginning of the year. It is now a few months before the year comes to an end and the feeling of discontent is waning out after realizing that I was living the blessing and the happiest moments were yet to come. Least said, they are yet to be scribbled since am not giving up on this anytime soon. Why?

A Train of Thought

Holding a medii one evening across the railway line, a train was grinding against the heavy steel bars with a chain of containers squealing following hurriedly behind. Long after it had gone, I wouldn’t stop thinking of this event that has been happening for a century and still counting. Many hours of a day expose the railway line as a dead spiral of connected metals cutting through bushes but the passing of the train blows the edges of the shrubs and heats the steel with friction. The recurrence of the train brought life to the railway line once or twice a day.  The recurring thoughts on my mind were taking over and the coming of the train saved me from the inability to stop thinking. I started thinking.

The purpose of the railway line was to sit and wait. For years it has done that. However, the trains that have passed through it keep on improving in quality and reliance in terms of speed and efficiency. My thoughts were almost turning me into that dead snake. The fear of regretting and the remorse that arises from self-blame saved me on that day. The journey seemed endless and spiraled in and out of the bushes like the railway line but if I had to blow the edges off and heat the surface, I had to keep doing what I do. I had to keep working, stand guard at my post and take it as a duty. Before leaving the chill spot I had resolved what I had to do. It was like January 1st again!

Being someone who acts out as passively aggressive, I know when I am stuck in a rut. I needed a simple readjustment and a brief timeout so that I would move forward like never thought possible. Since I am still on unpaid vacations and leaves, I keep my vacation moments low key and prefer to talk less about them. However, during these moments I choose to steer off social media and reunite with reality so as to reset and revisit my goals. Life is not easy neither is it meant to be. We face obstacles and hurdles that we have to overcome.

Overcoming Hurdles

During my unification moments with the reality, I meet different people in pursuit of overcoming the hurdles the journey presents. To get yourself better prepared, you have to accept that things get tough and it won’t always be sweet smelling roses. Persistence is a key and understanding and truly believing that persistence delivers results will keep you moving forward. Quoting Winston Churchill; “If you have an important point to make, don’t try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time- a tremendous whack.”

Sometimes, we forget to stop and celebrate the victories our efforts have created. Be proud of where you have come from and what you have achieved and soak up your achievements no matter how small they are. The next time you feel like giving up, ask yourself if you did everything that you would have possibly done to maximize on an opportunity. Meanwhile be happy and in the quotable words of Mavado on State of mind riddim; “Never you give up inna life, give up on people, that’s a choice but never give up inna life.” God people, shine your light and never give up on your life.

The Gospel: The Story Lord Believes in You According to Rick and Morty.

Published August 10, 2021 by Calpas

On this particular episode of Rick and Morty; Rick and Morty are stuck in a storyteller’s anthology as he tries to tap into their potentials. In what Rick describes as a human moment, he tears up because Summer, Morty’s Sister, is leaving for college. Story Lord taps further into Rick’s potential for a masterpiece. Rick results into telling a completely ‘unrelated and stupid’ story to save himself from the Story Lord who is obsessed with breaking the fifth wall in his endeavor to tap into their limitless potential.

Before burn out, to see how his story ends when it seems hopeless, Rick turns to prayer. ‘You are right Morty, sometimes it seems like there’s no way out, like it’s hopeless but remember there’s someone else always out there for us.’ Morty asks of who this unknown person might be. Rick continues, ‘My best friend and personal savior. Jesus Christ.’

The Story of Jesus

The surprise in Morty’s face whenever I watch this episode is inexpressible. It is the same expression drawn on the viewers face when Rick proceeds to go down on his knees and implore the mercy of God when Morty had always believed that Rick did not believe in God. However, without a doubt, Rick is sure that God always believes in ‘us’ and gave the free gift of eternal life.

On this particular day, I met two mzungus stranded on the ground floor of that apartment. one of them greeted me with an uncertain ‘mambo’ but I wasn’t sure it was intended for me. The least of my expectations that day was to speak to a white man. Looking back, I realized the salamu was meant for me and I retreated. Fist bump. Then came the introductions and I had made American friends without using the internet on that day.

The two American students/evangelists were a brave and social lot. Being in the country for less than a week, I found their confidence outstanding. I was interested in getting to understand if they would welcome me at their place with unequal hospitality as they referenced of Kenya. “In the suburbs people have guns. They will shoot you for trespassing.” The honesty in this answers scared some piece of me but ignited the part where I had to ask for their reason of travel.

The story of the Gospel

What is the gospel according to you? How can you define the gospel? I hope you are a Christian. if you profess your faith rightfully as one, you have already answered my questions. In case you are still looking for the right words to phrase your answer, do some introspection. You don’t just need an answer but the gospel. It is a question that nobody had previously posed. I was lost in thoughts for a few moments trying to figure out an answer to a simple question.

In the course of interaction with the mzungus’, I had the experience of getting their understanding of the gospel. It isn’t different from your own understanding of it. The source material of what the gospel is, is the same one for universal Christianity. The Bible. I was impressed by how effortless these guys quoted the bible verses. For sure, they had taken their time reading The Word. The New Testament was visibly written in their hearts while preaching the good gospel. It was a short interaction with minimal BS and a lot to learn.

The Story of Conversion

I love how relentless Jehovah Witness advocates are. Tell me you have not met one of their evangelist and I will ask, Kwani huko Nchi ingine? The gospel advocates spread the light of the word to the darkest places of the world. They have to convince the darkest souls of the light in Jesus Christ and the free gift of eternal life to dying souls which seek redemption. Is the mission possible without conversions?

Conversion is the greatest challenge of evangelism today. According to my Mzungu friend who had been in Kenya for two months, around 75% of the people in Nairobi say they are ‘Christians.’ This implies that they subscribe to a certain denomination or have a glimpse of the word of God. Many of these people believe that they left the darkness for the light when they joined a particular church or upon meeting this and that apostle or prophet. It is hard to teach an old dog new tricks and that’s how some souls lose redemption. Of interest, I was keen in noting how guile the prosperity gospel that has taken root in the sermon is purging more souls into eternal ruin. Listen to your pastors at your own peril. To the evangelist on missionary work; preach the Gospel and the Word of God and not the word of man.

Blessings.

Delta Variant: How to Meet a Person with a Face Mask Today

Published August 3, 2021 by Calpas

If I may ask, how many new people have you met this year? Upon reflection, you cannot remember all the faces that you have come across thus far. However, you remember something significant about someone you previously crossed paths with. What was that?

We hardly recognize our friends these days. A face mask covering the last third of their faces to wade off a pandemic is the least of concern. It is strange. Just like when you meet a stranger who to them, you are not a stranger but an acquaintance. Have you met a stranger who knows you so well? You get scared and then wane out that worry by asking questions that you feel will provide some clarity on how they know you. Often times, they will feel obligated to give you that clarity.

Start a Conversation

Take it this way. There is this girl that weakens your bones when you meet her. As you are spotless scared to talk to her, you set a council composed of likely leads who have an idea of who she is. Sometimes, the council oversteps the mandate and brings you the phone number that you wanted badly. However, things take a turn for the worse when she asks where you got her number from. Since explaining cowardice awakes one to the realization of its existence, you choose to deviate and let it slide. Please, can you gather the courage and do it yourself? In any case, if I am coming back alive, I will take that risk.

Wear your mask Properly. Keep Safe!

It is the same risk you take when starting a conversation with a stranger or when eavesdropping. It takes a pair of balls to interrupt someone in their story and ask them to clarify something when you were not an intended party in the conversation. There was this particular time that I was on the waiting bay of an office and the front desk staff was conversing on the impact of Corona virus. It doesn’t slip a mouth these days.

The discussion was interesting to listen too. One of the well-dressed men among the staff members outsmarted my intelligence. He was either a fool to believe what he was saying or was making himself stand out as one. He did not look like the typical fools you come across daily on the streets. For this day, his good looks had deceived him to leave his brain back at home. I sound judgmental but this is an observation I made from the impression he was trying to create.

The Delta Variant

The Delta variant of Corona virus had been reported in India at the time. The effects of the new variant were being felt by the sub-continent and the international media and social media were awash with details of the dire humanitarian crisis. People were dying in thousands and the global citizens were worried that this variant would spread across the tropics, something that has happened eventually.

Back to my fresh and clean man. He had an interesting theory that would cast the light to the people on the front desk on that day. His talk was well choreographed but insanely insensitive and ridiculous. ‘Let me tell you about what is happening in India. It is Punishment from God.’ These words set off an introduction to an interesting storytelling session.

With the left earpiece off my ear, I lowered the volume of my music player and decided to eavesdrop. There was no way I was going to miss out on this absurdity. There’s nothing uncomfortable and comforting at the same time as listening to a man nail another man on the cross. Ceasar had a field day with Jesus and look at the comfort he had when washing his hand. Such is the nature of man. I listened as this man explained faintly on polytheism in the religions of India and why the wrath of God had chosen such an opportune time. I was aghast. Despite his deep research on polytheism, he had little knowledge on the religions and the religious practices in the sub-continent.

Simply, he was acting as a Christian. I do not mean to offend the Christians who feel entitled by having an honorable place in the sight of the Most High but look at how easily you spot the speck on the eyes of fellow men. Look at how easily we assume the role of the judge and forget our own iniquities. I wouldn’t stand that discussion neither would I take part in digging holes. In any case; if you are digging a hole, you have to dig two. I wouldn’t leave without sharing my thoughts with them too.

A Christian

I asked for a minute so that I would set my mind straight on what I had heard. Surprisingly, the gentleman had not remembered to say a prayer for these people that he felt needed a God. To set my conscious free, I advised him and his colleagues on doing it, since they had emphasized on how Christian and born again they were.

Faith, the beautiful lady that was seated at the reception found some light in what I had said and invited me to join their church and be a member of the ‘young blood’ that would bring salvation. It was the first good offer that I flatly refused this year. She did not give up since she asked for my number and tried to convince me a few more times to join their church. It was by fate that I happened to be in that office that morning but I chose my destiny. The sole of my shoes was as comforting as the internal peace in my soul as I was leaving. On the way, I couldn’t help but wonder endlessly on how blind men are leading other blind men. Jesus taught on this, peruse the gospel. Do not wait till it’s too late.

3:00PM: The Light in The Teachings of Jesus and A Happy Easter!

Published April 5, 2021 by Calpas

A person’s eternal destiny is not predetermined.

 The Teacher

He is referred to as the Teacher or Rabbi. Come to think of it, I left school but I take lessons from life on a daily basis. Different encounters with different experiences and enormous lessons. In any learning, the teacher strikes the learners attention.

It is the Easter period and I revisit an account of one of the greatest and striking teachers of a lifetime. Read across the gospels. The striking and memorable teachings on the divinity of the Lord and the Kingdom of God and the variety of teaching methods that Jesus used perfectly portray a savior.

Imagine having to prove yourself kwa mbogi that you are worth their time and that they should abandon whatever they had going on and follow you. A hard task if you practically tried it but too easy if you read of it. At a time when a rabbi had to be formally trained, seeds of doubt where meant to thrive. Remember Thomas? However, before his death, people had recognized that Jesus was indeed a teacher sent from God. Like other teachers who rolled the streets in the cities and the countryside during His day, Jesus had disciples; buttressed his teaching with scripture, announced divine commands, used different teaching methods to make his teachings memorable and got into trouble with the government of the time on legal disputes. So this gets a thought across my mind. The government has always been around looking for trouble. Taxation is as equally controversial. (sic)

Parables and Memes

It’s all to impress. If He came back today and tried to use parables on us, the people of this generation, the impression would be dead before the revelation. Today, trap me with a meme and you will impress my agility. In case he came back today, 30sec stories and short undercut jabs on reality would make an instant impression on us the listeners of this generation. What if evil figured this out and decided to corrupt the souls of a generation? Remember, evil doesn’t take rest just as Jesus doesn’t take rest in trying to save.

‘Every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruits.’ With simple parallelism the Teacher would provide a massive lesson that is still applicable in our lives today. Nothing is hidden and the nature of the tree is made manifest in the fruits that are produced. The diseased nature of the tree might be hidden to the gardener but upon the coming of the light, which eventually happens, the secret comes out. I hope you read this as the parable I intend it to be or you can check the gospel of Mark to clear your doubts on my sense.

The Kingdom

‘The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field.’ We spend our entire days and lifelines on the fields. The purpose? We are looking for a treasure that we give different terms as we try to give meaning to life. For some; ni kuomoka bila apologies, kumake it no matter what, making it at the end, looking back and feeling proud and other “normalized” words that make it a daily effort worth our time and endeavors.

The kingdom of God is central in the teaching of Jesus. Beyond the physical realm that we hope to kuomoka and build our own kingdoms, Jesus taught of another kingdom that is a present reality and a future hope that His followers ought to invest in.

Jesus said, “ My kingdom is not of this world.” When darkness fell on that city that afternoon, the intern Roman soldier who was faithfully following the orders from above witnessed the presence of that kingdom. In this world you ought to ask yourself, “people need salvation. Will they save you?” No guarantees.

I had the Best Easter Weekend yet! Happy Easter Too.

A Case of Shoot and Miss; Shot by Love?

Published March 30, 2021 by Calpas

I had not believed that it could turn you blind until I found someone who could not see a spot.

My Chest

Shot of a young woman

Would it not be nice if this was all about me and I got to get some things off my chest? However, this is not about me but I see from their eye as they said this to me. What can one say of love if they live with hate? Will they not stab their hate right into your love and ooze an ounce of believe out of you? That is why you feel robbed when the memories and worries cloud your mind. Did you check the weather report, they didn’t say I have a clear mind, did they?

Dilemma.

“I love someone but I think I found someone. I don’t know.” For me this did not envision a dilemma in any way for it crossed my mind that it was time that she had found someone. For her, this was not the case. It was a real dilemma. I am out the loop on this but isn’t interesting?

The talks of his goals and plans overwhelmed her senses. Spinning and grinning and with that he was in her head as she tried to figure out the next move. Conversations can be healing. However, not with everyone. For this, she did not need to listen to anyone but herself. The conscious and the heart entangled in a crisis.

She loved him but she never got it to him. Was she ever going to? Now the time was upon her, her thoughts hijacked and attention divided and taken away. With no memories to hold on too she wanted to explore the end of the tunnel but someone had shone a light from the other. Remember biblically someone turning to a saline rock? It was a crisis.

Emotionally, I could feel the torture and I had a genuine question that I had held back but felt conflicted. I was willing and ready to know If you treated someone right, cared for them, checked in them, been together every day and night and shared a shelter and room if what they felt was love.

The road not taken is unconvincing but can be the path to the promised land. The road you trod can be the right one and the road you take defines the beginning of a new course. You see the dilemma now. I had no word for a soul confused at a junction. But before you get to the junction, you ought to have a destination.

A Destination.

She was on a stroll when a stranger stopped her. Without a plan on the lane, a stranger beckoned her to the side and with a sneaky smile and a lame jab swept her pride off the pedestals. She was bound to fall for anything for she never stood for anything. Not for love. That was a risk too much for her but she thought that she now had figured it out. Or, the saving grace she had always been praying for had come sufficient of salvation.

Without a specific destination of her own, she was now in limbo. But for me it did not stand for a dilemma but an outright fall. A fall not off pride but anything. the ignition key and the legs on the acceleration, it was time to set off on a journey. She was not ready to pack yet but the time was ticking. However, another wasted opportunity to pick her brassier was a regret held back and a loose tear held back.

It was a lesson that I still could not learn. Sometimes, it’s on the surface for everyone to see. Other times, it’s below but so as above… It’s a conversation that I could not give a resolve. A conversation into introspection where she had only herself to listen to. Could she do that for me?

A monologue: Silent Voices from the Top Office.

What is left out of seven if six are declared mad?

A morning Medii.

The first word has reached God’s ears and look at me now. Good graces befell my ancestors and look at the descendants. Dollar vans escorted to the depository and all they have to say is ‘he’s a despot.’ Money moves aside; hear them flow with lingual insults and forget this power comes with authority from the absolute; for who else can? Them go down on their knees, every Sunday, asking for special favours from Him mighty every day. They covet. Jah grant them mercy and the resilience to watch me flex pon this seat as I hold me meditation every morning. Bewildered with service to man and Him High up, I stretch my back on the recliner and catch a glimpse of the rave of activities down in the city. ‘God help those souls in their hunting today. Do people still gather wild berries and roots?’

A Consensus and Back stabbers.

As the CEO of this great nation and the leader of the different nationalities that make us one, I do my work diligently. Do you dispute?  On a particular dry morning you choose me to do you the service of representing you. Not once but as time tells, I still I am the CEO you so much adore and respect. Do you await my speech with exhilaration? If you don’t, you still have to listen to what I have to say and if you have no time for that, listen to the people. But do not listen to them all. Cynics and critics patrol the streets looking for converts and they pree the weak hearts. The critics almost brought me down during my first term as your adored CEO. Talking about and exposing my business deals and practices. They became too loud I had to often ease the tension with a sachet of warangi on a regular. For years they spoke evil and saw no good. I heard they talk of how hot hell is but rarely do they appreciate the blacksmiths in the furnace down the abyss keeping the fire ablaze. I silenced them with your help and now they dine on my table, tired of taking the leftovers; which many of you appreciate earnestly. Now my own people can’t accommodate a lost brethren and are now throwing pebbles. Their intentions; a desire to take over the dining table after my turn to get the meals is over. Why so soon? I saw an opportunity for a new consensus and this destabilizes the butterflies in their guts. A consensus for a masterpiece from a master planner has brought us to strange times; a party opposing itself. Despite my maneuvers in dealing with a noisy critic posed as an observer of my activities, I now face informal critics in my own wing.

The Hustlers cause

The royalty and commoners agree on democracy and not on the means used to get a meal pon the table every evening. The commoner pree our resources and wealth. Some turn into impatient thieves and a cold piece of metal silences their runs. ‘The hustlers scatter upon a bang.’ A confidante, styled as an hustler intimated this. I guess them hustlers do not snatch and grab for many live to come near the royal quarters. When here, all they talk about is the next hustler down the line. What can you do for them to get a seat pon the table? Is all they ask about. ‘Who’s that next hustler down the trenches working their way up?’ I ask. A youth trying to acquire a job after completing his education is the first mention they have; highlighting his brilliance, intelligence and untouched sense of integrity and hard work. During my silent meditations I recall these moments when I have to save a brilliant youth from depression and I cut open my warangi sachet and wince as the liquid goes down the throat and in a second I have a liver to worry about. ‘The business people are suffering and you can save them as the big CEO.’ I know. Taxes and debts are bad for business, so is inaction. I give a promise to check this out only on the promise of a bigger revenue from these people. I heard farmers are big time hustlers too. Big meals in the oven. All they have to do is practice some patience and I will get to them. what about hunger. I will get to that after a meal. A healthy CEO, a healthy nation.

UPINJI: SICKER THAN CANCER, DEADLIER THAN SIN.

The rooftop breeze gives the perfect atmosphere for storytelling and comic. During my blank space moments, I take a few flights to the center stage of everything worth a listen from the youths trying to get a cut from life. Thuggery and itchy fingers dominate the struggle they mount on a daily pon the streets today.

Slide Pockets.

I walk with my hands in my pocket to keep whatever is in there, inside my pockets. Mama says this is rude and lazy. I’d rather be rude to a con than drop me guard. As I go for my spot, on the second step of the staircase, him youth next me recounts an experience.

A street urchin comes asking for a pound to offset the worm-deficit in his gut, the left hand holding a Dasani-type bottle filled with some strange sticky fluid, Mafuta ya ndege. The sticky fluid gets you higher than a kite, according to a trusted source I had a deep convo with on substance abuse a while back. Like the youth pon the sticky fluid, me narrator is as broke as the youth. The difference; a clean slim-fit suit and a disfigured bottle with some highness.

‘I need an escort to settle the discomfort that comes when I get to the clouds.’ The escort; a snack. ‘I got fare only but when Jah bless, me drop a dime on a regular pon your hands.’ The fly-youth doesn’t buy the words and is interested on a now and not a future that is uncertain. ‘ I fast without saying a prayer. I sleep on the cold floors and wake up to a warm sunlight each gracious day. I don’t have a promised meal but I get a meal more often than you would expect. I don’t have standards like you got. I am ill-mannered. If you know anything about manners, you will realize that I don’t play along. I had a humble request but you are playing hard ball and I am hungry.’

The pickney goes for the pockets, grabs a pair of earphones and a dirty fifty shillings note; the kind that has transitioned from the rich to the poor to the needy and back to the streets. ‘I will spare your smartphone today as I wait for my big blessings as you await yours. Thank you for todays’ meal and in case you are interested, I got a pair of earphones that I can sell you at a reasonable price. ‘

Superior Cunning.

Fresh from muchatha, I came to town looking for a great life away from the rurals. I step into town and I am pretty confused.  Up the road from country bus, I met a group of teen youths. Silver slings and rings; an underground rapper perfect pose. A canine covered by a sparkling silver cusp; ultimate badness and swag. Style and swag attracted me to them and I decided to ask for directions around town. We take a few turns and the demands start coming in. ‘Fare ni how much? we are not the cheap type. We offer VIP services if you can afford us. You see the boys moving bulk in them trolleys? They work for us. Wasee kanjo know and trust us with their bidding. You have no reason to be worried. Where are you headed to?’

This was the last conversation they had before turning on him. After getting to some abandoned train station, they requested to use his cellphone to make a call to the head of their security department to report a breech; a breech of trust. Expensive sneakers, a bag with all his assortments and any means of communication gone. Tied to the railway line, the vibrations of an oncoming train awakened him from a deep sleep with faint memories of what transpired.

Stitch Up

The youths are choosing crime over life. Life choices are a task but choosing a longer life is greater than growing a tumor that will eventually kill your vibe. I got no respect for thieves. Violent robbery, cunning ways, trickery and corruption represent theft and no sweet-coating can portray a contrary thought or perspective. I leave the rooftop having shared my own experiences with mading’o, turaia and upcoming crooks in my maneuvers around town. Sometimes, negotiation has been my chemotherapy.

Another Slide on the Smoke Screen.

Resting my eyes I forgot everything until I realized I had missed her. Then it hit me.

No curfews back then. Crawling back into the crib a few months and weeks ago, all I had to be worried about was the time. From my sides, if you don’t miss a ride that uses the service lanes on the highway past the forgiving hours, you won’t miss the unforgiving squad of night stalkers pon di dark edges beyond the spark of the council security lights.

The ducking, false turns and humming that gives a scary in the dark ours, I unlock the door and thank the gods of security for keeping me on lock. Wasted and tired, like a sack on the bed, check out my phone as the eyes whence and itch, stop sign red.

Just when am falling off I see a text that I had left off to think a reply over. Then it hits me, we can meet at some place like people used to in the real world. In fear of the demons of sleepless nights, I agree to everything, a goodnight and the switch flicks.

Another blessing was here. Hit the road trying to see another sunset. On a meditation, on my daily plans, it hits me I have to meet her in town. Checking my phone, I had a missed call and a phone battery on life support. Slide in my skips and set off. Plan, a meet and laugh.

Have you traced your rib cracker ? You meet someone for a first time and you feel the painless weakness in your lungs. A few years back I had that pleasure. Over lunch, listening to stories and laughter, the ears had come out joyous. Afterwards, goodbyes and a promise of seeing one another said as a usual gig and a hug in case the way home got cold.

A smile and a racing heart, I made for my bus stop. Then, it hit me, battery’s dead.

Sky gazing, trying to gather my thoughts, I remembered how this day ended recently. All along I remember taking a seat on the bus, on realizing my ride-mate was a dude, a seat I hoped would have some lass on, I fell asleep. Woke up when I had them say ‘mwisho’ and walked home texted that I was safe and sleepy and puff… darkness.

I had fare back home in my phone. I realized my phone was off when I got to the bus station. That’s when reality hit me smack on the face. In these streets, coins come in handy. Happy and confused, I decided to check on a mate who we had a few business, broker, deals together. He was just leaving the office. Kasee. One way to hold them down for a few minutes no matter the hurry, ask for a glass of water and they have to give you a seat and give you a couple of reasons why they ain’t sparing a drop on you unless urgent.

Seeing him motion for a seat, I jump at the opportunity. ‘ While at it, connect this phone to the charger.’ I hang out with with cleanheart people. I connect with good spirit souls. I left with a phone on survival mode, dry lips, a lesson on how to own a water bottle and a confident sense of getting home.

Resting my eyes I forgot about a dead battery and replayed the meet and laugh on my smoke screen and slid to a deep sleep.

Forgetting this, I am upset!

What is Merry About Christmas? It Is Reviewing your Rebirth.

Published December 25, 2022 by Calpas

Meanwhile, it is that time of the year when you start planning for the future year. 51 weeks of 2021 are over and weren’t enough to achieve what you wanted to. Well, forget that for a moment. It’s Christmas. Let’s celebrate for the weekend.

The Christmas weekend is long. You can celebrate senselessly, sleep on some ideas and wake up to new decisions. At this period of the year to the end of January, we call these ‘new decisions’ resolutions. But along the way deep into the year, we call such decisions clarity.  So as we celebrate, what are some of the ideas you have for your new year’s resolutions?

I remember a while back, I had the resolution to seek love. Looking back, I realize it was misplaced but a lesson learnt. I left someone I loved for someone I liked. It was late in February when I came back to my senses. I got clarity way past valentine’s season, a few days into the rainy season.

There’s an interesting manner weeks turn into years- like how this week will be last year and next week will be next year. This drift happens across the year. You drift from joyous celebrations to disheartening moments and then muddy madness. At this point, you are done with the first quarter of the year. The long rains quench your thirst at the break. If you are not steadfast with your decisions, the drainage system washes the resolutions. Are you getting me?

In this moment of confusion, the year races by without anyone’s notice for a while. Tax returns, government documents renewals, back to schools, Naivasha, budget reading, and then, corporates start announcing the end-of-year profits. The year is gone! We start coming back to our senses but the October Fest is here!

In a moment of confusion, we get caught up in the deadline crisis again. You start saving again, you stop going out again and you start rebuilding your goals again. However, this time, it’s too late but you don’t want to believe it. You still think you can salvage a moment of the year. You count the baby steps and feel good about yourself. However, you want to know what happened between June and October.

This is what the festive season is about. Reflect on the past moments and find a reason to celebrate the present. As for the future, leave that to the soothsayers.

Merry Christmas and a Happy 2023!

I am a very direct person
And selective with which people I invest my time in
Because I believe that wasted time is worse than wasted money
Neither do I believe in wasting words
And regretting wasted time is more wasted time.

When it comes to love and loss,
Acceptance is never easy
We can’t make someone see all we have to give,
Make them love us, or make them change.

There’s never enough time to do all the nothing you want
Your hand can seize today but not tomorrow
And thoughts of your tomorrow are nothing but desire.
Don’t waste this breath, if your heart isn’t crazy, since,
“The rest of your life” won’t last forever
It is named the *web* for a good reason
Stop wasting your time looking for the key to happiness
The door is open and unlocked, just walk through it.

Early this week, two classmates of mine asked me, “Kiptoo. How do you manage to go to events alone and still remain unbothered?” Well, last week on Friday I attended a sort of concert in the institution I am in alone. My classmates and their friends came together and they saw me sited alone. They waved at me and I waved back. Also, I usually post on my Whatsapp status of the places I go to and most of the time, I go solo. I actually never saw this as rather unusual. I am okay with it. Their question prompted me to evaluate this habit of mine that they found amusing. Why do I go to these places alone? Don’t I have anyone to go out with and share this experiences? Don’t I have any friends? Am I selfish perhaps that I only want to enjoy this kind of…

How Rain Becomes a Money maker During Temple Runs.

Published December 10, 2021 by Calpas

During the rainy season, shielding oneself from the rain is as important as walking safely through puddles of rain water and slippery surfaces. Blocked drainages and flash floods are a nuisance and risky. Crossing overflowing drainage systems and flooded rivers is a money maker for some people during this season. As some people feel the impact of the rain, others wet their fingers counting racks.

Last year during a time like now, the rains had relentlessly hit the city. On an early morning, I was trying to cross from one part of an estate to another in Githurai, Nairobi. The linking bridge had been overwhelmed and carried away by the floods. Ghetto youths from a nearby upcoming slum had taken the matter into their hands and constructed a make shift bridge. Using offcut pieces of wood collected from timber yards, they had constructed a rickety, unstable and temporary bridge for the early birds. Having completed the task by 7 O’clock, the only duty left for the day was guarding and taking compensation from anyone who wanted to use the bridge.

On either side, there was a collector you had to give 20 shillings to cross. The collector was guarded by around five youths. One of the guarding youths on either side explained to the pedestrians why they were asking for a fee. The only way you would cross to the other side was only by paying the small fee to reward their effort- a compulsory reward. If you caused trouble, the other guards would whisk you away with clear instructions that you had to look for an alternative route. During the whisking away, mabare and pickpocketing accompanied the embarrassing moment.

After paying the compulsory reward fee, the youths would honorably let you cross and offered a barrage of pleasant words and gratitude once on the other side. After crossing, I was still shaken by the thoughts of the bridge carving in or falling apart due to the unprofessionalism in putting it together. Later that day, I heard that the youths had carried the bridge at sunset. Two days later, the river was flooded again and the bridge made a comeback. Until the rains were over, it was never left overnight neither did anyone cross without giving a compulsory reward. For mama mbogas who were a majority of the early birds, sometimes, they traded their bananas for the crossing. Despite the risk posed by the bridge, it was safer than wadding through the dirty river.

This is the season when you discover faults on your roof. It is also the time when you realize that the path to your house is not as efficient as when you moved in during the dry season. This happens to be the case for a group of downtown residents from a place I know. Although they are separated by a single lane of buildings, assessing the downtown residents can be hectic during the rainy season. The access route is a shortcut that cuts through a container shopping center and a marshy undeveloped piece of land. The shortcut is popularly referred to as temple run.

The name temple run is derived from the shortcut’s resemblance to the popular android game by the same name. During the dry season, the name does not make sense since the path is smooth with a few rocks popping up between the reeds. The path is very efficient during this period and the evening traffic of pedestrians is relieved by other shortcuts that disperse the people towards different destinations. However, the rainy season swallows the meanders and eventually, the temple run is formed.

Temple run poses a great risk to every user during the rainy season. If anyone crafted a way of solving the risk of jumping and balancing on shaky stones, majority of the temple run loyalist would be willing to pay a handsome reward to keep using the path.  It is disgusting when one leaves their house clean, swerves through the small puddles of water on the road and eventually slip into a flooded marsh a few minutes before getting to the highway. There is always a conflict of intuitions between the part that wants to go on with the journey and clean up before arrival and the other part that asks one to go back and change their outfit.

The temple run is arduous for alcoholics. Since it relies entirely on one’s stamina and vision secondly, anyone tipsy inevitable struggles with locating the right stones to step on and muddy patches that are less slippery. How does someone with impaired judgement make it to the other end clean? They hardly do.

When a friend told me that the shortcut was called temple run, I had a lot of questions racing on my mind. I finally settled on an assumption that the name was metaphorical. I thought that the path was impassible at night by walking and the only way one would secure their possessions would be by running while asking for divine intervention. However, after ascertaining that the path was one of the safest, I mustered the confidence to ask why they had referred to the path as the temple run.

If I was to offer a clever solution for the temple run during the rainy season, I would recommend a pair of gumboots. In case one slipped and plunged into the marsh, they would not feel disenfranchised as someone who plunged into the marsh with a pair of white converses or white ngomas. However, since some rainy season entrepreneurs are invested in analyzing risks and asking for rewards after providing solutions, this is an invitation into analyzing a potential market. The floods are a market yet to be flooded since only a minority are interested in providing solutions. During this rainy season, remember water is not always shallow despite being still. Lash out at anyone who acts recklessly.

Skinny People Are Attractive, Broke and Unhealthy.

Published November 29, 2021 by Calpas
a thin man exercising lifting a barbell. cartoon illustration sticker emoticon

You know an attractive slender man or skinny girl who has always caught your attention? I know of none but I happen to be one. For as long as I can remember, I have never added weight so much that I had to think of shedding it off. At the same time, I have maintained an average weight for the longest time. This average weight witnessed a change last year when I lost a kilo but the constant figure of a 0.4kg short of a bag of cement creeped back after lifting of the Covid imposed lockdown.

Being a big time representative of the slim people association, for the longest period of time, I have never envisioned a bulky future appearance of myself. However, sometimes I have heard sentiments that provoked me to think of such a future but I dread it for two reasons. First, I am scared of seeing that and secondly, I hate the hard labour of exercising although I keep fit.

I remember during a past liming session with my boys, an exquisitely cute skinny girl walked past us and all the champez had their jaws drop off like a wounded bird. The hubristic champ started a rant of how he would get to her but she resembled a chopstick and he let her go. We all knew he was intimidated by her charming looks but the chopstick reference was a turning point. His reference was insanely accurate and insensitive. When we got to talking of preferences based on size, a new word cropped up. Petite. The word described the majorities preference since a disagreement arose on what skinny implied but sexually speaking. (sic)

Three cartoon young women of various body types: skinny, average and chubby. The three girls wear same sets of sport clothes.

A past personal experience brought a uniquely biased opinion to my attention. I remember meeting a friend who asked me if I had several hungry nights as the second question they asked after shaking hands. At first, I thought it was a joke. After a series of interrogative questions on where I was working and what I had been up to, I realized that his question was a subtle effort at trying to analyze my financial situation. Since I am pathetically honest with people, I answered his question truthfully but kept my silence on anything that was not expressly asked for.

However, some people do not try to be subtle or clever. They cut to the chase. I like these people since you can expressly see their perspective and implied notions. How is being broke related to being slim? It is related in the sense that many malnourished people have a famished, slender and weak physical frame. So when some people see a slim person, they tend to think that food is a problem. This is open to debate but one can’t afford a balanced diet if they are broke. This is an assumption that derives a lot of sentimentalism.

When was the last time you were in a brawl? I do not remember fist fighting anyone but I have been at the centre of many fights to witness the silly causes of those fights- often a lack of common sense. I remember laughing at the comment of a lady I was trying to seduce after she said that she felt less protected and secure on the streets due to my slender frame. It was a laughable, half-wit joke. In case we are fighting, I keep it simple and victorious. Anyway, I am a peaceful person and I think physical strength is today outsmarted by crazy youths obsessed with ‘pointing’ and ‘squeezing’ without a struggle.  There is a false sense of security and protection that is derived from physical appearances. Confidence and common sense outmaneuvers this false sense despite the physical frame of an individual.

‘You look thin. Are you sick?’ This is a statement that pops up from time to time. Being slim or slender in itself is unhealthy before the eyes of many people. The exact disease is the toughest diagnosis for the proponents of this view. I remember a colleague in the slim people association narrate an ordeal of having to give evidence to his friends that he was perfectly healthy to take part in a charity drive despite his colleagues getting a pass on the tests. He had to undergo all the tests to ascertain that there wasn’t anything uncertain with him.

There are a lot of searches on google on, ‘is being skinny unhealthy.’ Searches with these negative inclinations are often induced from interaction with people. Self-doubt inspires such searches. While being skinny is perfectly healthy, it is what is inside that really counts. Body weight is not the exclusive guide on what is inside. While nobody wants lean soup on their bowls, it would be graceful to appreciate the different sizes we are served with.

How to Dress in Cool, Emboldening and Vibrant Rastafari Fashion

Published November 29, 2021 by Calpas

Until a few months ago, I was donning an Afro that had curled into locs after leaving my hair unattended by a comb for a while. Often times, people referred to me as Ras but I wasn’t one. However, sometimes what people say about you tends to get into you and that is when I decided to look for a cool Rasta cap to tuck my hair away.

A Rasta cap is a round, crocheted cap mostly worn by men that comes in a range of sizes depending on the length of your hair. Rasta caps can also be knitted or woven.  Among some Rastafarian communities, the Rasta caps are worn as religious head coverings but it’s cool fashionable look gives a convenience that out-strands only religious purposes.

Rastafarian clothing is defined by the Rastafarian colors. These colors are red, green and gold or yellow. Sometimes, black is also added. Each color represents a symbol that identifies with Rastafarianism. Red signifies the blood shed in the fight for the liberation of and justice for the black community. Yellow or gold represents the wealth of their motherland Africa while green represents the beauty and vegetation of Ethiopia- the promised land and black represents the African people who initiated the movement. The astounding combination of these colors is an equivalent of cultural appropriation.

I do not subscribe to Rastafarianism but can we talk about Reggae inspired t-shirts and hoodies? Music is the most powerful channel for the proliferation of Rastafari ideologies and culture. The attractive, v-shaped, black Ajax FC third jersey t-shirt is a perfect example of a Rastafari influenced kit. The Marley Kit, as it is popular referred to, is a collaboration between Ajax, Adidas and Bob Marley family that references Three Little Birds– an iconic song by Bob Marley.  The black kit features red, yellow and green details and has a jersey, shorts, socks, track pants, sweater and track top.

Rastafari dressing highly influences reggae clothing. Starting off as ragged clothing, today it takes a natural, cool and relaxed look that is oriented towards African culture. Dressing in reggae clothing involves locating an item in your closet that may have red, yellow and green together in one garment. An easier option may be in looking for a garment like a t-shirt or sweater with an image of Bob Marley on it.

Projecting a cool and relaxed style is often accompanied by accessories that complement your look. Simple, comfortable and vibrant-colored wristbands, earrings and pendants are worn. Pendant faces have Rastafarian colors and references such as the flag of Ethiopia, Conquering lion of Judah, the continent of Africa or Bob Marley or another famous reggae music icon. Dainty wooden, handcrafted or handmade dangling earrings and studs with Rastafari colors define Rasta earrings.  The wrist bands and necklaces are made from a combination of red, yellow, green and sometimes black beads.

Rastafari fashion draws heavily from African culture. It requires modesty and use of natural fiber in making apparel. Dressing in the African-style, prohibiting short dresses and bare backs, symbolizes African roots. Rastafarianism has immensely influenced modern fashion through outfits and style for example dreadlocks as a hairstyle. If you are looking for a smart, cool and vibrant look, Rastafari fashion offers inspiration that emboldens your appearance.

Sticky Notes from The Art of War by Sun Tzu

Published November 13, 2021 by Calpas

To lift an autumn hair is no sign of great strength. To see the sun and the moon is no sign of sharp sight and to hear the noise of thunder is no sign of a quick ear.

Sun Tzu was an ancient Chinese military general, strategist and philosopher born in 544BC. He is believed to have written the influential ancient Chinese book on military strategy, ‘The Art of War.’ The book was popular in the Western society in the 19th and 20th century because of its practical use and continues to impact on Chinese, Asian and Western culture and politics.

The Art of War depicts a philosophy of war that is instrumental in managing conflicts and winning battles. Today, it is not only used by military strategists but also political leaders, business managers and in diplomacy and forging relationships between nations. The Art of War is listed on the Marine Corps Professional Reading Program and is a recommended read for all United States Military Intelligence Personnel and CIA officers.

The American defeat in Vietnam drew the attention of American military leaders to the writings of Sun Tzu. The significance of The Art of War was proved during the Persian Gulf war in the 1990s where General Norman Schwarzkopf Jr. and General Colin Powel used Sun Tzu’s principles of deception, speed and attack on the enemy’s weakness.

Since the art of war is a matter of life and death and a road to either ruin or safety, here are important lessons from The Art of War by Sun Tzu.

  • Constant Factors

The art of war is governed by five constant factors that one should take into account during deliberations on how to obtain the field. The five factors should be familiar to every general in order to attain victory. He who knows them not will fail. These constant factors are: the moral law, heaven, earth, the commander and method and discipline.

The Moral Law causes the people to be in complete accord with their leader. Moral law ensures that the people follow their leader regardless of their lives.

Heaven signifies night and day, cold and heat and times and seasons.

Earth comprises of distances which may be great or small, danger and security, open ground and narrow passes and the chances of life and death. If you know heaven and earth, you may make your victory complete.

The commander stands for the virtues of wisdom, sincerity, benevolence, courage and strictness.

Method and discipline involves the marshalling of the army in its proper divisions and ranks and the maintenance and control of the military expenditure

Since all warfare is based on deception and modifying of plans according to favorable circumstances, a knowledge of the five factors and action upon them by a general guarantees conquest.

  • Essentials for Victory

In war, your greatest objective should be victory and not lengthy campaigns. A wise general makes a point of foraging on the enemy and using the conquered foe to augment one’s own strength. Supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy’s resistance without fighting. To achieve this, there are five essentials for victory;

  1. To win, know when to fight and when not to fight.
  2. Know how to handle both superior and inferior forces.
  3. Animate your army with the same spirit throughout all ranks
  4. Prepare yourself and wait to take the enemy unprepared.
  5. Have the military capacity.
  • Tactics and Mind sets

A good fighter puts themselves beyond the possibility of defeat and then waits for an opportunity to defeat the enemy. This opportunity is provided by the enemy themselves. If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. However, if you know yourself and not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat.

To see victory when it is within the ken of the common herd is not the acme of excellence according to sun Tzu. Security against defeat draws a sense for defensive tactics and indicates insufficient strength. Ability to defeat the enemy means taking the offensive and attack manifests superabundance of strength.  Making no mistakes establishes the certainty of victory since it means conquering an enemy that is already defeated.

A consummate leader cultivates moral law and strictly adheres to method and discipline in order to cement his power that in turn controls success. Staying proof against defeat despite the turmoil and tumults of battle manifests a skillful general who can keep the enemy on the move.

All men can see the strategy whereby you conquer but what none can see is the strategy out of which victory is evolved. Military tactics are like water. Water shapes its course according to the nature of the ground over which it flows, runs away from high places and hastens downwards and retains no constant shape. Similarly, in war, the soldier works out his victory in relation to the enemy they face.  In warfare there are no constant conditions and victory is attained by modifying tactics in relation to the opponent.

  • Dangerous Faults

Sometimes you have heard of a case when an army was overthrown and its leader slain or exiled.  There are sins of a general that can spell ruin to the conduct of war. There are five dangerous faults that can affect a general.

They are; Recklessness which leads to destruction, cowardice which leads to capture, hasty temper which can be provoked by insults, a delicacy for honor which is sensitive to shame and over-solicitude for his men which exposes him to worry and trouble.

The Art of War teaches the readiness to receive an opponent by making your position unassailable. In a wise leader’s plan, advantages and disadvantages are blended in fighting.  Direct methods are used to join battles and indirect methods are needed to secure victory.  Sun Tzu also advises that your plans should be dark and impenetrable as night and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt. However, ponder and deliberate before making a move.
