We’re excited to announce a new collaboration with Kings Co-op Bookstore!
They have been long-time supporters of our programming, and now have set us up with a wishlist at the store. This is similar to what you’d see on our Amazon wishlist, BUT you will get a 20% discount when you buy these books locally instead!
No need to worry about shipping costs OR lining a billionaire’s pockets! Not sure what books to buy? No problem! You can buy a gift card for BBB, and the store will give us the 20% off when we go to buy books! Thank you for supporting our programming and a rad, local cooperative business.
We are back in the women’s unit of the Burnside jail and will be posting biweekly requests from our library program. If you have any of the following books, you can drop them off at Alter Egos (2193 Gottigen Street) or Venus Envy (1727 Barrington Street) in Halifax.
Thank you to everyone who came to our Book Sale on July 29! You helped us clear out some space in our library and fundraise for our next year of programming.
Books Beyond Bars has been busy and we want to share with you what we’ve been up to, and what’s coming up for us!
Thank you to all our supporters who have helped make sure that we could offer support to our patrons on the inside from afar. It means that we’re able to start from a strong foundation as we rebuild our in-person program. We appreciate you!
We are fundraising to cover 1 year of expenses. Support our Fundrazr campaign claim perks such as t-shirts, zines magnets and more. The money we raise will help us cover the cost of rent for our library, supplies for our programming and outreach events such as Prisoners’ Justice Day.

After a pause on programming due to COVID-19 restrictions, we started delivering a modified program to the women’s unit of Burnside jail in April 2021. Our programs had been suspended indefinitely since March 2020, which means folks have a strong need for library programs. We are excited to be working with people inside again!
Our drop-off locations are: Venus Envy (1598 Barrington St) and Alteregos (2193 Gottingen St). Please respect their COVID rules and support the local businesses that support us.
To mark Prisoners’ Justice Day, August 10, Books Beyond Bars will hold a panel discussion featuring people who have experienced incarceration.
Date and time: August 10, 2020; 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM

Books Beyond Bars operates with the belief that the prison system is fundamentally flawed. Sending women to prison does not support people in dealing with the issues that led to their incarceration: poverty, abuse, racism, addiction, etc. We visit the women’s prisons in Nova Scotia to break down barriers between women who are caught in an unjust system and those of us on the outside involved with prison justice issues.
Join us on August 10th outside of the courthouse to discuss with ex-prisoners and academics what it’s like inside and where the system fails in its rehabilitation. A panel of people with lived experience will also be present to answer questions and discuss how they have interacted with the prison system and how we can re-imagine a new way of rehabilitation and restorative justice approach.
Come and stand with Books Beyond Bars and learn about the history of Prisoner Justice Day and how you can help fight against a capitalist prison system.

Books Beyond Bars has received a request to write letters of support for Clarence “Chico” Stevens, who is incarcerated in a medium security federal prison in British Columbia and is at high risk for contracting COVID-19. His friend Sherry Edmunds-Flett is asking for letters of support for the release of Chico Stevens so that he can live with her on day parole and get the support he needs.
Letters of support will help show the CSC and the Parole Board of Canada that there is community support which would go a long way.
Please read the details below and write a letter if you can.
