How to install Java

Updated at: Jul 3, 2024

The guides here refer to installing a plugin into your web browser which lets your web browser run special little programs called "Java Applets". Java Applets were popular in the 1990s and 2000s, back when web browsers were much simpler and had less features. Java Applets let websites embed more advanced programs into otherwise simple websites. Java Applets made websites with animations, video, audio, and 3D graphics possible; this was a big deal decades ago.

Java Applets are no longer used on the internet, and no modern browsers support them or the software needed to run them. Native web browser technology has advanced to such a point that all of these once-groundbreaking achievements can now be implemented directly into web pages, without the need for extra plugins.

These guides exist as a historical list of instructions; maybe you have a really old computer that you want to install the Java Browser Plugin on. Be careful though; the Java Browser Plugin had a pretty bad track record when it came to security problems, and there may still be problems with the plugin if you manage to get it to run again.
