Georg Schett

Vice president research and chair of internal medicine, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg

Georg Schett has upended our understanding of autoimmune diseases, and what treating them can accomplish. Using CAR-T therapies, Schett and his colleagues in Erlangen, Germany, have managed to put diseases like lupus into complete remission, effectively making what until now have been viewed as chronic illnesses disappear. His work has set off a gold rush as biopharma companies big and small aim to turn the academic achievements into approved medicines.
