  • Ever wondered what really gets investors excited about backing a startup? Spoiler alert - It's not just about the killer product or skyrocketing growth Let's talk about the unspoken power of your reputation in securing investment💡: Sure, nailing your product and metrics is crucial, but there's a sneaky yet powerful element many overlook: YOUR reputation 🤯 Let's talk about how it can make or break investor interest. I'll start by giving you a real-life example from when I was at Greycroft... Once upon a time there was a company I was super intrigued by. Their product was compelling and they already had some customer traction. It looked like a great opportunity! But then, I began to hear some whispers about the founder and some of their shady behaviors. Bummer To sum it up, those small murmurs from non-specific references were enough for me to slow down my pursuit of the company. Some of you might not think that was fair, but it is the reality of how decisions are made and it's DEFINITELY something you need to be aware of. In the world of VC, perception is a powerful player. A casual encounter where an investor thinks, "Hey, good vibe!" or "Hey, something's off" could be THE tipping point for your investment round. Sound crazy? Let's try to put this into perspective: How many times have you done something similar when meeting new people? After you meet, you have a decent grip on how you feel about them - good or bad. That 1st impression is everything. Even if it doesn't accurately represent the person, it's all you have to go off of. So, what's the main point here? It's critical to protect your reputation and understand that a significant part of the evaluation that goes into an investment will be non-scientific What can help with this? 1. Maintain a high standard in how you conduct yourself in all situations Think about the New York Times test - would you be comfortable if what you were doing or saying ended up as headline news? If the answer's no, you probably shouldn't do it🙂 2. Infuse positivity in your interactions Try to leave a positive feeling with every interaction you have within the ecosystem. And no, this does not mean to be fake or overly sweet. Be real, be honest, and move through the world doing your best to make a positive impact Your reputation is the unsung hero in the investment realm. Its impact extends beyond the product. Own it, master it, and witness those investment doors swing open wide! One last thing before you go... This entire thread was based on this week's newsletter. Starting The Kavi Group was a journey full of grit and determination that truly pushed my wife and I to our limits. But we persevered, transforming challenges into steppingstones. Here's how we did it 👇 Our first significant obstacle was managing cash flow. Understanding its vital role in any startup, we carefully considered every aspect before deciding to fund The Kavi Group using our life savings. It was a risk, but a calculated one, born from thorough due diligence.  Another test of our entrepreneurial spirit was establishing credibility. It's tough when you haven't built a name for your business. So, how do you convince employees and clients to take a chance on you? You become the product, or service in our case. 🙂 For me, overcoming credibility challenges involved leveraging my network. I proactively reached out to my existing connections and sought out individuals who recognized my potential. Through these networking efforts, I was able to leverage valuable relationships, some of them chose to become my colleagues at The Kavi Group, while others chose to become our clients. 🙌 Remember, starting a business isn't an overnight process. It requires patience, persistence, and a whole lot of resilience. How have you established credibility in your field when starting something new? #Entreprenuership #Challenges #Startup #CareerJourney #Business
