Goal Setting: It is said that 14% of people who set goals are 10 times more successful
A HBR report states that 14% of people who set goals are 10 times more successful than those who don’t.
More and more of us have been finding it challenging to complete our goals. Not because we haven't been committed to the goal, rather that life has dealt us a curved ball or two; and we have continued to keep pushing towards the same goal/key milestones.
Having goal set my way through life for many years, I also got stuck in this rut for some time in 2020. Being a true believer in the old adage of ‘repeating the same behavior and expecting different results is the first sign of insanity’, what is the answer? Creating more agile goals. I have listed 3 points below on what helped me.
POINT 1: I began to review my goals and key mile stones on a more frequent basis. With the ambiguity and constant change in 2020, I needed to assess what was working and what wasn’t working more frequently, and I amend them accordingly.
POINT 2: I also took into account what resources were available. Well, I know it’s hard to believe, but I can’t be good at everything. In some cases I would have questions with members of my network or even finding training.
POINT 3: Remember that adversity does not discriminate. So how can you build your resilience. Lucy Hone Resilience expert and researcher gives us 3 steps.
- Resilient people know that tough stuff happens. They don’t welcome it but they know it’s a part of the human existence.
- They understand where to focus their attention. They focus on the aspects they can change and not the areas they can’t.
- Resilient people ask themselves, “Is what I’m doing helping or harming me?”.
I have two questions for you?
Q1. What activities are you adding to the to do list which are not having impact? Do they need to be tweaked or ditched?
Q2. What can you do to develop your resilience?

4yGreat article Susan. I’ve been reading ‘The One Thing’ which pulls apart ‘to do lists ‘. It’s a really refreshing idea!
