The promises and limits of today's AI
- AI is often portrayed as a disruptive force set to transform everything. It's thought that AI will soon replace all jobs, operate entirely autonomously, and even surpass human intelligence. While these stories capture attention, they often blur the line between science fiction and reality. So before we discuss AI agents, let's first ground our understanding of AI by examining what it can actually accomplish today. First is the automation of repetitive tasks. AI excels at the routine and repetitive, where rules are set, data is clean, and systems are stable. AI is useful for data analysis and pattern recognition. It can process vast amounts of data to identify patterns and generate insight. AI also excels at natural language processing, or NLP, where chatbots and virtual assistants understand and respond to human language.
