- [Instructor] I grew up in Los Angeles on a street that joins two giant movie studios. I love movies. That said, sometimes things don't work out the way they're supposed to. One example of this is cartoons and animated movies, which can be fabulous experiences. Hand drawn animation is great. Digital animation is great. Except for when it's too great, as with motion capture and 3D modeling and things can fall into what's called the uncanny valley. This applies to animation, robots, and just about anything artificial that may be attempting to replicate something alive. As the object comes to resemble a human more and more, the familiarity and likability both increase, except when the resemblance becomes nearly but not quite perfect. Then to many people, it suddenly becomes creepy and even repulsive. And that's the feeling that I personally get from a number of high tech animated movies. And so I avoid them.
