''We’re not trying to kill pests. We’re trying to save agriculture.” That’s how Andrey Zarur, founder of GreenLight Biosciences, born in CDMX, educated at the UNAM and with a PhD. in Chemical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology —frames his mission in this week’s MexMoves podcast interview by Whitepaper.mx and hosted by Eduardo García and me. Zarur lays out a bold vision: Mexico should become a global hub for the biotech and pharmaceutical industry—taking over from China and India as the place to investigate and produce. Mexico’s enjoys a great combination of geography, natural resources, history and above all lots of talented people: generations of world-class scientists, engineers, and biotech talent, of whom Zarur is one (as is, it should be said, the President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, with a PhD. in Energy Engineering from the UNAM). “There’s no better place in the world to put a bio-manufacturing facility than Mexico,” says Zarur. “We educate more engineers per capita than any country—and we need to build industries to keep them here.” Case in point. GreenLight is successfully producing RNA-based crop protection tools that are targeted, biodegradable, (and already approved by COFEPRIS and Senasica). Unlike traditional pesticides, GreenLight’s RNA tools target specific pests, leave no toxic residue, and help solve a major crisis: pests are evolving resistance to conventional chemicals faster than new ones can be developed—driven, in part, by global warming. GreenLight's RNA-based products are already approved in the U.S., Brazil, Mexico, and Ukraine. They are sold out for all of 2025. Scientists at Rice University have discovered a type of bacteria that can generate electricity, offering exciting possibilities for future technology. Unlike most living organisms that use oxygen to produce energy, these bacteria use a natural compound called naphthoquinones to push electrons outside their cells, releasing energy in the process. This process, called extracellular respiration, works like how batteries release current. It allows the bacteria to survive and produce energy even in places with no oxygen."This method is simple yet brilliant," said Biki Bapi Kundu, the lead author of the study. "Naphthoquinones act like couriers, carrying electrons out of the cell so energy can be made." For the first time, researchers were able to understand how this process works. They used computer models and lab experiments to grow the bacteria on conductive surfaces without oxygen. The bacteria continued to grow and release electricity-effectively "breathing" through the material. This discovery could help improve wastewater treatment, biomanufacturing, medical testing, and even space exploration. The findings were published in the journal Cell.
