Updates

  • The Workers Circle stands for justice. We were proud to partner with Disappeared in America and the Not Above the Law Coalition to ensure the human cost of ICE detention was front and center at today’s Senate Judiciary Committee. By bringing four families of people currently detained at Alligator Alcatraz, Krome Detention Center in Miami, and Stewart Detention Center in Georgia to Secretary Kristi Noem’s DHS oversight hearing, we sent a clear message: she and the Department of Homeland Security must be held accountable for the lives they impact. Human rights aren't negotiable. Read the full press release here: https://lnkd.in/e8Nh6wZh   #SocialJustice #HumanRights #WorkersCircle

Our friends at the The Workers Circle, the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians, local faith groups, and residents have been organizing peaceful, nonpartisan vigils outside Alligator Alcatraz since the jail opened back in July. The stories from inside are harrowing: severe overcrowding, inhumane conditions, people sleeping next to overflowing toilets, and being denied access to medical care. Some have described being put in the “box,” a 2×2-foot cage where people are placed as punishment, sometimes for hours at a time, with hardly any water and their hands and feet restrained on the ground. To make matters worse, this jail operates outside federal oversight, without the basic tracking systems used in ICE facilities. This means that people detained at Alligator Alcatraz are held “incommunicado,” effectively disappeared and denied contact with their families or lawyers. If you’d like to join the next vigil, please visit freedomvigils.org for information on free buses from Miami and the Ft. Myers/Naples area. This madness must be stopped.

  • We’re honored to stand alongside you, the Miccosukee Tribe, faith leaders, and local residents in demanding dignity, accountability, and justice. Thank you Kerry Kennedy for using your platform and your leadership to help stop this madness.

  • We’re proud to see Director of Social Justice Noelle Damico featured in The Guardian for her leadership and courage in standing up to cruel and dehumanizing immigration policies. “One of the most rewarding parts of this ongoing resistance is that people are finding one another. They’re breaking their isolation. They’re coming out from their homes and their neighborhoods, and they’re saying, ‘I’m not alone in thinking this is wrong, and I’m not alone in wanting to do something about it.’” As protests grow in response to Florida’s Alligator Alcatraz detention center, Noelle is helping lead the resistance — grounded in the belief that immigrant dignity, safety, and human rights are non-negotiable. This work reflects what the Workers Circle has always stood for: solidarity across communities, moral clarity in moments of injustice, and the courage to say not in our name. • In a new op-ed co-authored by Workers Circle CEO Ann Toback and Andrea Miller of the Center for Common Ground, they break down how collective action shaped the recent Virginia #election — including the 607,727 handwritten, nonpartisan postcards Workers Circle volunteers sent with the Center for Common Ground to help Black #voters get the information they needed to cast a #ballot. They show why people-powered organizing still moves the needle and how we can keep building that momentum nationwide: https://shorturl.at/dHufP
