Students Harnessing Academic Research for Exchange. A UBC Community-Based Project.

About us

UBC SHARE (Students Harnessing Academic Research for Exchange) connects students, faculty, researchers, and community partners to make research about Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES) more accessible. The project supports students in building practical skills in knowledge translation. Through coursework and collaboration, students create multi-media outputs that are shared back with the community both online and in person.

  • This week, we are featuring a website with interactive data visualization elements created in Dr. Richard Arias-Hernandez INFO 419 classroom, based on the article “Incarceration Among Street-Involved Youth in a Canadian Study: Implications for Health and Policy Interventions” by John Omura, Evan Wood, Paul Nguyen, Thomas Kerr, and Kora DeBeck. Students Talia Kainz, Naraa Little, Kate MacLeod, and Aidan Scott created this data visualization website as part of their coursework. Through the project, they developed skills in writing clear, accessible summaries and translating complex data into engaging, interactive formats. Their work was published on the DTES RAP and presented at a community share-back event! Check out the website here and explore the data: https://lnkd.in/gu___sSP Check out the original research article here: https://lnkd.in/gAjxfD2p

Over the past year, we were fortunate to receive TLEF funding from the UBC Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology, which allowed us to expand our small project into seven classrooms at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Over the coming weeks, we will be showcasing the student work published this past year, alongside highlights from faculty experiences. This week, we are featuring an infographic created in Dr. Kasim Husain's MDIA 150 classroom, based on the article “Assembling ‘Japantown’? A critical toponymy of urban dispossession in Vancouver, Canada” by Dr. Trevor Wideman and Dr. Jeff Masuda Students Hayne Cho, Cecilia Zhu, Sammy Su, and Serena Wang created this infographic as part of their coursework. Through this project, they learned how to write plain-language summaries, design infographics, and learn about meaningful community-engaged research. Their work has been published on the DTES RAP and was presented during a community share-back event. • Welcome to the UBC SHARE (Students Harnessing Academic Research for Exchange) page! Our project aims to improve access to both academic research and community-produced resources, with a focus on Vancouver's Downtown Eastside (DTES). Over the past year, thanks to support from the UBC Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund, we’ve been able to expand to multiple classrooms and deepen our connection with community. We will use this page to highlight our student work, community partners, and everything else going on with UBC SHARE. If you are interested in learning more, check out our Linktree or email us at share.team@ubc.ca to get involved! https://lnkd.in/gaX3_JMt UBC Faculty of Arts UBC Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology
