    The key to network upgrade is first off evaluating what systems or business operation is affected by the upgrade. Secondly a back out plan and a rollback strategy. Thirdly a a solid deployment plan with a lab environment to build additional confidence to the business. Last but not least a level of BCP if the upgrade goes terribly wrong… as long as you have a way for the business to operate come the next day! *another key thing that some overlook depending on the business is quieter periods… always try to aim for upgrade at the time of the year / day that is least impactful.

    The best strategy is to know what you are doing and have a plan in place with an outage window to work through any unforeseen issues. Then, have people available who also know what they are doing in case you get in the weeds and need some assistance. It also doesn't hurt to have a deep understanding of technology in general so that you can effectively troubleshoot something and know what you are looking at. This has worked pretty well for 26 years. Troubleshooting and working through an issue is a lost art.
