“Once” follows disheartened Irish busker “Guy” (Jake Gale) and his encounter with spirited Czech immigrant “Girl” (Gillian Eichenberger) as they connect over their shared love of music.

As a whole, the film becomes messy and uncertain about what it wants to say — and how it wants to end — but it remains an audacious feat for Gyllenhaal, who continues to demonstrate her directing prowess; one can only imagine how unstoppable she could be with a fully realized vision.
