Justice for Alma Bowman Sign-On Letter
Alma Bowman is a 58-year-old Filipina American, mother to two sons, immigrant and human rights advocate, whistleblower and member of the Malaya Movement. She was born in 1966 to a Filipina mother and an American veteran father in Pasay City, Philippines and migrated to the US in 1977, where she has resided in Macon, Georgia ever since.
Alma was previously detained by ICE from 2017-2020 at the Irwin County Detention Center (ICDC) where she endured medical neglect and separation from her children. During that time, she bravely became a whistleblower to expose the injustices and was a key witness in a federal investigation into harmful and non consensual gynecological procedures performed on women in custody at ICDC.
On March 26, 2025 Alma was detained by ICE at a routine check-in, and remains detained at the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia. Since March, she has experienced medical neglect that has exacerbated her chronic health issues. Her separation from her loved ones and the stress of long-term detention have negatively affected her mental health. Since 2017, Alma has cumulatively spent over 44 months or over 3.5 years in ICE detention. Alma's situation is one of many thousands of horrible cases occurring across the United States as the current administration continues its brutal and violent attacks on immigrants.
The fight for Alma's freedom continues. We, the undersigned community members and organizations are united in demanding Justice for Alma Bowman. We collectively demand:
The US government immediately releases Alma from ICE detention so that she may reunite with her family and continue to pursue her case for US citizenship
The US government does not deport Alma to a third country destination
