Now includes the Personality Quiz! Discover which instincts are rooted in your pup’s breed mix—and which are uniquely their own.

A dog's health isn't solely a product of genetics, but of diet, environment, and lifestyle. We'll help you give your dog the best of everything. Decode breed mix, screen for health conditions, find relatives — all this and more with Embark!

For example, did you know some dogs have a genetic mutation that makes them sensitive to many commonly used drugs, including some anesthetics? Drug-sensitive dogs can experience symptoms ranging from diarrhea, lethargy, seizures — even a coma. With Embark, you'll know if your dog has drug sensitivities so you can avoid potentially dangerous medications.

A heads up on Diego's health

Jane discovered that Diego had inherited a genetic health condition that meant it was very likely he would become blind as he got older.

Progressive Retinal Atrophy, PCRD

PRA is a retinal disease that causes progressive, non-painful vision loss. This type of PRA leads to difficulty seeing at nighttime, before eventually affecting daytime vision as well.

A veterinarian's recommendation

While there’s no cure for Diego’s condition, a vet suggested that a companion dog could help him through it. So they adopted Dixie. But when she saw Dixie’s Embark results, Jane found the biggest surprise yet…

Dog with floppy ears, a black snout with white on the end and a black nose looks upward to the camera with her brown eyes.

A long-lost sister!

Embark’s Relative Finder revealed that Diego and Dixie are actually full siblings! Though they may be from different litters, Diego and Dixie have the same mom and dad.

"Our dog found her passion"

“We have been able to tailor Bandit’s training and exercise regime much better to suit her needs now that we know she is composed of primarily working breeds. Our dog found her passion in scent work and has been much happier since.”

"So grateful"

"One of my dogs has a hereditary issue. Embark notified me immediately before completing the rest of the tests. I took Allie to the vet, unknown health issues were fixed and she is now on preventative treatment (prescription dog food). So grateful!"

    Very good information

Our rescue puppy was extremely itchy so we did a sensitivity test and it revealed she was sensitive to beef and sweet potatoes. After removing them from her diet the itching stopped! So we decided to do the DNA +Health too. It's fun to see what breeds showed up!

The most helpful part was the genetic traits, which explains many of her dominant genes and how they expressed. She has dominant genes from breeds that are only a low % of her DNA, so that's pretty neat & unexpected for anyone not familiar with how gene expression works. Also the Health test shows diseases and other health issues, which lucky for us our puppy doesn't have any at all that are in the likely list. It doesn't do sensitivity so there is no duplication with that other test.

Great information that's helpful for us to make decisions with. It reinforced our knowledge of her breeds, and gave us several things to consider for her behaviors and even her coat.

    Worth every penny!!!

When we adopted our pup from the rescue, they told us that they had no idea exactly what breeds she was, and just had her listed as a chihuahua. The whole family fully believed she was a chiweenie, but I finally caved and decided to buy the DNA test because I was too curious. And it was worth every penny to do this because we found out SO MUCH about our girl! Specifically she was not a Chiweenie like we expected, and is actually mostly JackChi. The test results also came super quickly! The lab received the swab on January 11th and we had results by January 30th, which we were super happy about as we were expecting turnaround right after the holidays to be a bit longer.

Overall, if you have a rescue pup and are unsure of what breed(s) they are, I would definitely recommend the Embark DNA tests. You learn a lot about your pup and it's super cool to discover what exactly your pup is!

    Rex

We had to get the DNA testing done on this dog. He looked like Shepherd or Husky but had a smooth, soft wavy coat. It was so up in the air as to what he was made up of!!
