Improving maternal and infant health
Economic security during pregnancy and early infancy is a powerful health intervention. By reducing financial stress and removing barriers to care, Rx Kids supports healthier pregnancies and healthier starts for babies.
In research and program evaluation, Rx Kids is associated with:
- Earlier and more consistent prenatal care, including increased use of care in the first trimester
- More frequent prenatal visits, supporting monitoring, prevention, and timely intervention
- Reduced smoking during pregnancy, a key driver of poor birth outcomes
- Improved birth outcomes, including healthier birth weights, less premature babies, and a prevention of NICU admissions
- More pediatric visits with 96% say their infant attended at least one pediatric appointment.
- Reduced involvement with child protective services (CPS), including a 32% decrease in infant maltreatment investigations
Maternal mental health and wellbeing
Pregnancy and the postpartum period are times of heightened vulnerability for maternal mental health. By reducing financial strain and increasing stability during this critical window, Rx Kids supports maternal wellbeing in meaningful and measurable ways.
In research and participant surveys, Rx Kids is associated with:
- Lower likelihood of postpartum depression
- Significantly reduced parenting stress, a known predictor of child welfare involvement, parenting challenges, and broader family stress
- Greater feelings of being loved, valued, empowered, and respected
- Higher levels of hopefulness, a powerful indicator of future wellbeing for both mothers and families
- Increased parental confidence, with 82% of mothers reporting that Rx Kids helped them feel more confident as parents
Creating jobs and boosting local economies
An independent analysis by the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research examined the first year of Rx Kids in Flint and found that direct cash support generated significant local economic activity.
- In its first year alone, Rx Kids generated an estimated $15–$40 million in local income growth in Flint, driven by increased household spending .
- The analysis estimates up to 200 jobs supported or created, particularly in local retail, services, and related sectors.
- Every $1 invested returns an additional $0.60–$3.00 to Michigan’s economy, with the strongest benefits concentrated locally.
These findings show that Rx Kids functions not only as family support, but also as an effective local economic stimulus in communities that need it.
Saving public dollars through prevention
Rx Kids delivers meaningful cost savings through prevention—benefiting families, communities, and public systems.
- Improved birth outcomes in Flint are saving an estimated $6 million per year in health care costs, including reductions in complications and NICU admissions
- If similar improvements were achieved statewide, projected annual health care savings include:
- $220 million from the prevention of premature births
- $268 million from the prevention of low birthweight births
- Maternal mental health improvements: Prior research shows that reductions in postpartum depression can lower health care costs by more than $5,000 per affected mother, suggesting meaningful savings given the mental health improvements observed among Rx Kids participants
- Child welfare prevention: Research on early-life cash supports similar to Rx Kids estimate a $4.20 return for every $1 invested through avoided child welfare system costs—consistent with Rx Kids’ observed reductions in infant maltreatment investigations
- Education-related savings: Stronger early-life conditions are expected to reduce future public education costs over time, including lower demand for special education services and improved school readiness
Together, these findings demonstrate that Rx Kids is a high-return, prevention-focused investment—strengthening local economies today while reducing long-term costs across health care, child welfare, housing, education, and social service systems.
