Congress’ film preservation team dubbed him “the King of Silent Animation.” The seed of Stathes’ enduring passion took root in his 90s childhood, when slapped together VHS anthologies of cartoons from the 30s and 40s could be picked up for a couple of bucks in groceries and drugstores.

Cartoons On Film is a boutique restoration and distribution label specializing in early animated cartoons from the 1900s through the 1930s. Our focus is silent era cartoons. Cartoons On Film represents material held in the early animation film print archives of animation historian, archivist, and educator Tommy José Stathes. The majority of our in-house collection comprises rare 16mm and 35mm film prints. Most of the complete silent and early sound cartoons seen on this channel are simple screeners. We've been involved in an ongoing process of producing and releasing brand new restorations of these early cartoons, through the Cartoon Roots Blu-ray and DVD collections, as well as through broadcasts on Turner Classic Movies. Subscribe to this channel and stay tuned to learn about upcoming restoration projects involving classic silent era series like Farmer Alfalfa & Aesop's Fables, Mutt and Jeff, Alice Comedies, Dinky Doodle, and many others!
