James Greer Flagpole Pick
James Greer Flagpole Pick
Influenced by his own vivid dreams and dark imagination, local artist James Greer’s meticulously rendered black-and-white ink illustrations depict eerie fantasy landscapes inhabited by unusual characters. As unsettling as they may be, seeing these characters pulled from the shadows of the subconscious and adored on a gallery wall tenderly celebrates the outcast, the freak or the misunderstood. Greer’s exhibition was originally scheduled for last October, and he had spent the prior year developing a body of work entitled “Black Pearl Cycle,” “a series of portraits of fantastical underdogs and eccentric quasi-humans living in a subterranean refuge of derelict machinery and forgotten dreams.” When the pandemic flipped the world upside down, however, Greer found himself disconnected from the series and needing […]

Though revelers are asked to party in place instead of marching through the streets of downtown this year, the Wild Rumpus Halloween Parade & Spectacle has pivoted its energy into creating safe and engaging experiences nonetheless. An online auction and Halloween TV special are coming down the line, but for now, enjoy the “Wild Rumpus Virtual Art Show,” hosted by tiny ATH gallery. In addition to Sarah Flinn—whose painting, “Worm Forest,” appears on the cover of Flagpole this week—the show includes pieces interpreting the theme “Magical” by Sam Balling, Stefan Eberhart, Will Eskridge, Laura Floyd, David Noah, Lois Songster, Rose Shelton, Valley StipeMaas, Sam Watson, Jacob Wenzka and many more. The gallery will arrange pickups for purchased artworks, and a […]

Flagpole Art Notes “Ecumenopolis” & Wild Rumpus Art Call
ECUMENOPOLIS: Influenced by science fiction, fantasy, comics and space exploration, Jacob Wenzka’s “Ecumenopolis” is a new exhibition opening this week at tiny ATH gallery that depicts futuristic floating worlds offering a momentary escape from reality. Named after a term coined in 1967 by Greek city planner Constantinos Apostolou Doxiadis that literally translates to “world city,” “Ecumenopolis” represents a point at which pockets of human development expand and fuse to cover an entire planet. Wenzka leaves the narratives behind these drawings and paintings up to the viewer to interpret. “Is this a positive, optimistic future where we are boldly exploring space, looking for new life, and seeking out new civilizations?” asks Wenzka. “Or is this a frightening post-apocalyptic vision where we […]

Flagpole Art Notes August
THIS IS IT: “After relocating from Atlanta to Athens in 2016, illustrator, graphic designer and animator James Burns began using his artwork as an opportunity to familiarize himself with his new surroundings. “The View from Here,” a body of work currently installed at tiny ATH gallery, depicts local landmarks through a distinct style that bridges the gap between realism and Burns’ signature comic-book aesthetic. In addition to teaching motion design for nearly a decade, Burns has written and drawn a handful of comics such as his “Grumbles” strip and a graphic memoir entitled A Life Half-Forgotten. Burns will offer a virtual Artist Talk using Instagram Live (@tinyathgallery) on Aug. 18 at 7:30 p.m., and the gallery will be open during […]

With social distancing and limited contact to the outside world, it only makes sense for the role of a pet to elevate from faithful companion to beloved muse. Pet portraits may seem like a whimsical luxury to some, but the steady income they bring in can be crucial to artists’ careers, especially to those whose livelihoods have recently felt the impact of the pandemic through canceled exhibitions and markets, decreased online sales and closures of second jobs. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, painting rapidly changed from something I did after work to a skill I leaned on to afford stability while indefinitely unemployed and also quarantined,” says Jessie Lamay, who has not been able to return to her apprenticeship at Pageboy […]
